Adaptive Nonlinear RED Algorithm for TCP Congestion Control

  • Congestion control is a critical issue in TCP networks, Recently, active queue management (AQM) was proposed for congestion control at routers. The random early detection RED algorithm is widely known in the AQM algorithms, We present an adaptive nonlinear RED (NRED) algorithm, which has nonlinear drop probability profile. The proposed algorithm enhanced the performance of the RED algorithm by the self-parameterization based on the traffic load Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can effectively adapt itself between he RED and the drop-tail queue management by adopting proper nonlinearity in the drop probability profile. Through simulation, we show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm comparing with the drop-tail and the original RED algorithm.

  • AQM은 라우터에서 사용되고 있으며 큐의 순간적 길이나 평균길이를 관찰하여 혼잡을 예측하고 탐지하는 알고리즘이며, 평균 큐길이가 임계 값을 초과하면 혼잡이 발생하였다고 추론하고 라우터로 유입되는 패킷을 미리 폐기시키거나 패킷 전송 노드에게 혼잡을 미리 알림으로써 전송노드에서 전송률을 줄여 혼잡을 피하도록 한다. AQM 알고리즘의 하나인 RED (random early detection)는 패킷을 무작위로 폐기시켜 혼잡제어를 하는 큐 기반의 혼잡 제어기술이다. RED는 TCP의 시간경과 및 큐 지연을 줄이며 링크 활용도를 높이고 버스트한 트래픽이 유입되는 것을 관리하는 기술로써 널리 사용되어지고 있으며 혼잡도의 정도를 큐의 평균 길이로 추정한다. 그러나 파라미터($P_{max}$, $TH_{min}$)값들이 고정되어 있어서 특정한 네트워크 환경에서는 동작을 잘 못한다. 본 논문에서는 네트워크 상태를 지속적으로 감지함으로써 $P_{max}$$TH_{min}$의 값을 네트워크 상태에 적합한 값으로 자동적으로 바꾸어줌으로서 다양한 환경에서도 동작을 잘할 수 있는 확장 RED를 제안한다.

  • 네트워크 장비를 관리함에 있어서 환경에 따른 RED(Random Early Detection) 매개변수에 대한 설정은 쉽지 않은 일이다. 특히 관리자가 환경의 변화에 따라 일정한 서비스율을 유지하고 싶은 경우의 매개변수 설정은 더욱 쉽지 않은 일이다. 본 논문에서는 출력 큐에 멀티 코어 CPU를 탑재한 라우터를 가정하고 라우터의 출력 큐에, RED의 환경에 따른 매개변수의 최적화에 적합한 것으로 알려진, 인공지능의 유전 알고리즘을 직접적으로 도입하여 스스로 부하에 적응하는 AI RED(Artificial Intelligence RED)를 제안한다. AI RED는 FuRED(Fuzzy-Logic-based RED) 보다 단순하고 세밀하며, 실험을 통하여 AI RED가 찾아낸 RED 매개변수는 표준 RED 매개변수보다 환경에 더욱 잘 적응하는 효율적인 서비스를 제공하여 준다는 것을 확인 할 수 있다. RED 매개변수 관리의 자동화는 네트워크 관리의 측면에서 많은 효율성의 향상을 관리자에게 제공하여 줄 수 있다.

  • IEEE 802.11e standardized the EDCA mechanism to support the priority based QoS. And the virtual collision handler schedules the transmission time of each MAC frame using the internal back-off window according to the access category(AC). This can provides the differentiated QoS to real-time services at the medium traffic load condition. However, the transmission delay of MAC frame for real-time services may be increased as the traffic load of best effort service increases. It becomes more critical when the real-time service uses a compressed mode video codec such as moving picture experts group(MPEG) 4 codec. That is because each frame has the different importance. That is, the I-frame has more information as compared with the P- and the B-frame. In this paper, we proposed a buffer management algorithm based on the frame importance and the delay bound. The proposed algorithm is consisted of the traffic regulator based on the dual token bucket algorithm and the active queue management algorithm. The traffic regulator reduces the transmission rate of lower AC until that the virtual collision handler can transmit an I-frame. And the active queue management discards frame based on the importance of each frame and the delay bound of head of line(HoL) frame when the channel resource is insufficient.

  • In this paper the performance of some control theory-based Active Queue Management (AQM) methods are improved and investigated through simulation. The simulation scenario is considered to be closely realistic, in which the traffic is mainly due to http sessions. The results show the best performance of PID controller with respect to the others in good queue regulation as well as high link utilization and low delay metrics.

  • In this paper, we present the wavelet neural network (WNN) controller as an active queue management(AQM) in end-to-end TCP network. AQM is important to regulate the queue length and short round trip time by passing or dropping the packets at the intermediate routers. As the role of AQM, the WNN controller adaptively controls the dropping probability of the TCP network and is trained by gradient-descent algorithm. We illustrate our result that WNN controller is superior to PI controller via simulations.

Wavelet Neural Network Controller for AQM in a TCP Network: Adaptive Learning Rates Approach

  • We propose a wavelet neural network (WNN) control method for active queue management (AQM) in an end-to-end TCP network, which is trained by adaptive learning rates (ALRs). In the TCP network, AQM is important to regulate the queue length by passing or dropping the packets at the intermediate routers. RED, PI, and PID algorithms have been used for AQM. But these algorithms show weaknesses in the detection and control of congestion under dynamically changing network situations. In our method, the WNN controller using ALRs is designed to overcome these problems. It adaptively controls the dropping probability of the packets and is trained by gradient-descent algorithm. We apply Lyapunov theorem to verify the stability of the WNN controller using ALRs. Simulations are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Technique for Estimating the Number of Active Flows in High-Speed Networks

  • The online collection of coarse-grained traffic information, such as the total number of flows, is gaining in importance due to a wide range of applications, such as congestion control and network security. In this paper, we focus on an active queue management scheme called SRED since it estimates the number of active flows and uses the quantity to indicate the level of congestion. However, SRED has several limitations, such as instability in estimating the number of active flows and underestimation of active flows in the presence of non-responsive traffic. We present a Markov model to examine the capability of SRED in estimating the number of flows. We show how the SRED cache hit rate can be used to quantify the number of active flows. We then propose a modified SRED scheme, called hash-based two-level caching (HaTCh), which uses hashing and a two-level caching mechanism to accurately estimate the number of active flows under various workloads. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme provides a more accurate estimation of the number of active flows than SRED, stabilizes the estimation with respect to workload fluctuations, and prevents performance degradation by efficiently isolating non-responsive flows.

이중 큐 CHOKe 방식을 사용한 혼잡제어 (Double Queue CBOKe Mechanism for Congestion Control)

  • 기존의 단대단 혼잡제어는 단순히 중복된 ACK 신호를 이용하여 혼잡을 처리하며 일반적으로 혼잡을 제어하는데 시간이 많이 소요된다. 이러한 메커니즘은 혼잡발생시에 TCP의 혼잡 윈도의의 크기가 동기화 되는 현상을 피할 수 없으며, 더욱이 RTT가 증가될 경우 중복된 ACK 패킷을 받기 전에 혼잡이 사라지거나 받기 전까지 전송되는 패킷으로 인해서 정확한 혼잡제어를 할 수 없다. 최근에 이러한 단대단 혼잡제어의 문제점을 개선하는 다양한 AQM(Active Queue Management)를 소개되고 있으며, 기본적으로 RED의 혼잡 제어 메커니즘을 사용한다. 본 논문에서는 우선 다양한 전송률과 혼잡에 반응하는 흐름(TCP)과 반응하지 않는 흐름(UDP)을 갖는 트래픽 상에서 RED, CHOKe, FRED 그리고 SRED등과 같은 AQM의 효과를 평가한다. 특히, CHOKe 메커니즘의 경우 혼잡에 반응하지 않는 흐름이 증가 할 경우 공평성이 떨어지는 단점을 갖는다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 UDP 트래픽으로 부터 TCP 트래픽을 보호하기 위해 UPD 트래픽과 TCP 트래픽을 두개의 독립된 논리적인 큐에서 서로 다른 CHOKe 메커니즘으로 처리하는 이중 큐 CHOKe 메커니즘을 제안한다. 각 흐름의 정보를 유지하기 위해 LRURED에서 제안한 부분상태 정보(Partial state information)를 이용하여 트래픽 유형별로 구별하고 격리하여 보다 효율적인 혼잡제어를 제시한다.

Performance Improvement on RED Based Gateway in TCP Communication Network

  • Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has been considering the deployment of the Random Early Detection (RED) in order to avoid the increasing of packet loss rates which caused by an exponential increase in network traffic and buffer overflow. Although RED mechanism can prevent buffer overflow and hence reduce an average values of packet loss rates, but this technique is ineffective in preventing the consecutive drop in the high traffic condition. Moreover, it increases a probability and average number of consecutive dropped packet in the low traffic condition (named as "uncritical condition"). RED mechanism effects to TCP congestion control that build up the consecutive of the unnecessary transmission rate reducing; lead to low utilization on the link and consequently degrade the network performance. To overcome these problems, we have proposed a new mechanism, named as Extended Drop slope RED (ExRED) mechanism, by modifying the traditional RED. The numerical and simulation results show that our proposed mechanism reduces a drop probability in the uncritical condition.
