PV system's islanding occurs when the uitilty grid is removed but local sources continue to operate and provide power to local loads. Islanding is one of the serious problems in an electric power system connected with dispersed power sources. Also, this can present safety hazards and the possibility of damage to other electric equipments. If the real and reactive power of RLC load and PV system are closely matched, islanding detection by passive methods becomes difficult. This paper shows the simulation and comparision for the previous active methods and novel islanding detection method using frequency drift is proposed for grid-connected PV system.
When distributed generation such as a wind power system is connected to the grid, it should meet grid requirements like IEEE Std. 1547, which regulates the anti-islanding method. Since the islanding may cause damage on electrical equipments or safety hazards for utility line worker, a distributed generation should detect it as soon as possible. This paper proposes a hybrid anti-islanding method coupled with the active and passive detection methods. To enhance the harmonic extraction capability for an active harmonic injection method, cascaded second-order band-pass filter and signal processing scheme are employed. Simulation and experiments are carried out under the islanding test condition specified in IEEE Std. 1547. Passive over/under voltage and over/under frequency methods are combined with the active method to improve the detection speed under certain condition. The simulation and experimental results are presented to verify that the proposed hybrid anti-islanding method can effectively detect the islanding.

When large penetration of the distributed generators (DGs) such as photovoltaic (PV) systems is growing up in grid system, it is important to quickly prevent islanding caused by power system fault to ensure electrical safety. We propose a novel active method for islanding prevention by harmonic injection synchronized with the exciting current harmonics of the pole transformer to avoid mutual interference between active signals. We confirm the validity of the proposed method by performing the basic tests of islanding by using a current source superimposed the harmonic active signal. Further, we carry out the simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC, and verify the fast islanding detection.
Islanding detection is one of the most important issues for the distributed generation (DG) systems connected to the power grid. The conventional passive islanding detection methods inherently have a non-detection zone (NDZ), and active islanding detection methods may deteriorate the power quality of a power system. This paper proposes a novel hybrid islanding detection method based on Digital Lock-In Amplifier with no NDZ by monitoring the harmonics present in the grid. Proposed method detects islanding by passively monitoring the grid voltage harmonics and verify it by injecting small perturbation for only three-line cycles. Unlike FFT for the harmonic extraction, DLA HC have lower computational burden, moreover, DLA can monitor harmonic in real time, whereas, FFT has certain propagation delay. The simulation results are presented to highlight the effectiveness of the proposed technique. In order to prove the performance of the proposed method it is compared with several passive islanding detection methods. The experimental results confirm that the proposed method exhibits outstanding performance as compared to the conventional methods.
As photovoltaic(PV) power generation systems become more common, it will be necessary to investigate islanding detection method for PV systems. Islanding of PV systems can cause a variety of problems and must be prevented. However, if the real and reactive power of load and PV system are closely matched, islanding detection by passive methods becomes difficult. Also, most active methods lose effectiveness when there are several PV systems feeding the same island. The active frequency drift positive feedback method(AFDPF) enables islanding detection by forcing the frequency of the voltage in the island to drift up or down. In this paper the research for the minimum value of chopping fraction gain applied digital phase-locked-loop(DPLL) to AFDPF considering output power quality and islanding prevention performance are performed by simulation and experiment in IEEE Std 929-2000 islanding test.
Unintentional islanding results in safety hazards, power quality degradation, and many other issues. Thus, islanding detection of grid-connected distributed generation system is a key function for standards compliance. Many anti-islanding schemes are currently being studied; however, existing anti-islanding schemes used in inverters have power quality degradation and non-detection zone issues. Therefore, this paper analyzes existing anti-islanding schemes by using frequency drift in accordance with both islanding detection performance and power quality. This paper also proposes a new anti-islanding scheme by using frequency drift. Both simulation and experimental results show that the proposed scheme has negligible power quality degradation and no non-detection zones compared with other existing schemes.
This paper proposes a novel active frequency drift(AFD) method for the islanding prevention of grid-connected photovoltaic inverter. To detect the islanding phenomenon of grid-connected photovoltaic(PV) inverters concerning about the safety hazards and the damage to other electric equipments, many kinds of anti-islanding methods have been presented. Among them, AFD method using chopping fraction(cf) enables the islanding detection to drift up(or down) the frequency of the voltage during the islanding situation. However, the performance of the conventional AFD methods, which have a certain value of cf only, is inefficient and difficult to design the appropriate cf value analytically to meet the limit of harmonics. In this paper, the periodic chopping fraction based on an AFD method is proposed. This proposed method shows the analytical design value of cf to meet the test procedure of IEEE Std. 929-2000 with the power quality and islanding detection time. To verify the validation of the proposed method, the islanding test results are presented. It is confirmed that the proposed method has not only less harmonic distortion but also good performance of islanding detection compare with the conventional AFD method.
The utility-interactive inverter with critical loads should supply continuous and stable voltage to critical loads even during the grid fault. The conventional control method which performs current control for grid-connected mode and voltage control for stand-alone mode undergoes the critical load voltage variation during grid fault. The critical load voltage may have large transient when the inverter performs mode transfer after the islanding detection. Recently, the indirect current control method which does not have the transient state during not only islanding detection but also the mode transfer has been proposed. However, since the voltage control is maintained even during the grid-connected mode it is difficult to detect the islanding. This paper proposes an active anti-islanding method suitable for the indirect current control method which does not have NDZ(Non-Detection Zone).
