  • Active suspension controls stiffness and damping between unsprung mass and sprung mass in order to increase the ride quality. However, to increase the riding quality, the handling quality should be decreased and the rattle space should be increased. So, active suspension should cope with these conflict conditions. Therefore its actuating devices have to produce sufficient actuating force and have sufficiently short response time. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of 1/4 car model with an active suspension is studied according to hydraulic design variables. The active suspension consists of a hydraulic servo valve and a hydraulic cylinder. It shows better performance when it has more powerful and faster actuator.

  • We evaluated certain issues related to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) coupled with the use of active 2.5 GHz radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for patient identification using low field (0.3 T) MRI and computed tomography (CT) scans. We also investigated the performance of the RFID reader located outside the MRI room by considering several factors. A total of ten active RFID tags were exposed to several MRI sequences and X-rays of CT scan. We found that only card type active RFID tags are suitable for patient identification purpose in MRI environment and both wristbands as well as card tags were suitable for the same in CT environment. Severe artifacts were found in the captured MRI and CT images when the area of the imaging was in proximity to the tags. No external factors affected the performance of active RFID reader stationed outside the MRI scan room.

  • In this paper, we propose a new lung segmentation method for chest x-ray images which can take both global and local properties into account. Firstly, the initial lung segmentation is computed by applying the active shape model (ASM) which keeps the shape of deformable model from the pre-learned model and searches the image boundaries. At the second segmentation stage, we also applied the localizing region-based active contour model (LRACM) for correcting various regional errors in the initial segmentation. Finally, to measure the similarities, we calculated the Dice coefficient of the segmented area using each semiautomatic method with the result of the manually segmented area by a radiologist. The comparison experiments were performed using 5 lung x-ray images. In our experiment, the Dice coefficient with manually segmented area was $95.33%{\pm}0.93%$ for the proposed method. Effective segmentation methods will be essential for the development of computer-aided diagnosis systems for a more accurate early diagnosis and prognosis regarding lung cancer in chest x-ray images.

  • Background Scalp defects may be caused by various etiological factors, and they represent a significant surgical and aesthetic concern. Various surgical techniques can be applied for reconstructive work such as primary closure, skin grafting, pedicled or free flaps. In this article, the authors share their clinical experience with scalp operations using the technique of local flaps and discuss the application of this method from the perspective of not only the size of the defect, but also in relation to the anatomical area, quality of surrounding tissue, and patient's condition. Methods During the period from December 2007 to December 2012, 13 patients with various scalp defects, aged 11 to 86 years, underwent reconstruction with local pedicle flaps. The indications were based on the patients' condition (age, sex, quality of surrounding tissue, and comorbidities) and wound parameters. Depending on the size of the defects, they were classified into three groups as follows: large, 20 to 50 $cm^2$; very large, 50 to 100 $cm^2$; extremely large, 100 $cm^2$. The location was defined as peripheral (frontal, temporal, occipital), central, or combined (more than one area). We performed reconstruction with 11 single transposition flaps and 1 bipedicle with a skin graft on the donor area, and 2 advancement flaps in 1 patient. Results In all of the patients, complete tissue coverage was achieved. The recovery was relatively quick, without hematoma, seroma, or infections. The flaps survived entirely. Conclusions Local flaps are widely used in scalp reconstruction since they provide healthy, stable, hair-bearing tissue and require a short healing time for the patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the fine structural modifications of fibroblasts in the coronal region of inflamed human pulps from carious teeth. Six untreated human teeth with large carious lesions and two normal teeth as control were selected from male and female patients between the ages of 20 and 39. The teeth were divided into 4 groups by light microscopic findings: the normal control group, the chronic inflammatory cell-appeared group, the acute and chronic inflammatory cell-appeared group, and the total necrosis group. All tissues were fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.1M sodium cacodylate buffer at pH 7.4 and 1% osmic acid in same buffer. They were embedded in Epon 812. The ultrathin sections were stained conventionally and examined with a AEI Corynth 500 electron microscope. The results were as follows; 1. The fibroblasts of the normal pulps were almost in a quiescent state. 2. The active and the quiescent fibroblasts were found in the pulps of the chronic inflammatory cell-appeared group. Lymphocytes and plasma cells were also seen scattered among these fibroblasts. 3. In the pulps of the acute and chronic inflammatory cell-appeared group, active, degenerative and necrotic fibroblasts were found in the PMN appeared area. And all the fibroblasts in the fibrosis area were active. In the area of chronic inflammatory cellular infiltration, almost all the fibroblasts were active, but seldom were quiescent fibroblasts observed. Some fibroblasts in the pulps of two teeth had large vacuoles that contained banded collagen fibrils. The phagosomes had small beaded vesicles or large lysosome-like varicosity. In two of the teeth, microorganisms were present and two morphological shapes were identified, a rod and a coccus. 4. Vacuolar, vesicular, lamellar, fibrous and myelin structures were observed in the pulp of the total necrosis group, and cocci were also seen.

  • This study documents the distribution of (active) faults around the southern part of the Yangsan Fault and the Moryang Fault and the middle part of the Dongrae Fault. For this objective, we extracted lineaments and fault-related landforms by analyzing aerial photos and digital elevation models and with the result of fieldwork on fault-relating features of the Quaternary landforms. Geomorphological techniques for active fault study are not only preliminary but also essential methods because, in general, an active fault can be defined only with fault-deformed Quaternary sediments when there is no way to detect precise timing of faulting. Therefore, geomorphological interpretation in active fault research is necessary to determine the extent, direction, termination and timing of fault. This study addresses the results of such geomorphological analysis and geomorphic markers for tracing the active faults in the study area. It is plan to investigate with geophysical and geological techniques the sites referred in this study.

  • Proteins combine with other materials to achieve their function and have similar function if their active sites are similar. Thus we can infer the function of protein by identifying the binding area of proteins. This paper suggests the novel method to select binding area of protein using MCL (Markov Cluster) algorithm. We construct the distance matrix from surface residues distance on protein. Then this distance matrix is transformed to connectivity matrix for applying MCL process. We adopted Catalytic Site Atlas (CSA) data to evaluate the proposed method. In the experimental result using CSA data (94 selected single chain proteins), our algorithm detects the 91 (97%) binding area near by active site of each protein. We introduced a new geometrical features and this mainly contributes to reduce the time to analyze the protein by selecting the residues near by active site.
