Video based surveillance systems based on an active camera require a fast algorithm for real time detection and tracking of local motion in the presence of global motion. This paper presents a new fast and efficient motion detection and tracking algorithm using the displaced frame difference (DFD). In the Proposed algorithm, first, a Previous frame is adaptively selected according to the magnitude of object motion, and the global motion is estimated by using only a few confident matching blocks for a fast and accurate result. Then, a DFD is obtained between the current frame and the selected previous frame displaced by the global motion. Finally, a moving object is extracted from the noisy DFD by utilizing the correlation between the DFD and current frame. We implement this algorithm into an active camera system including a pan-tilt unit and a standard PC equipped with an AMD 800MHz processor. The system can perform the exhaustive search for a search range of 120, and achieve the processing speed of about 50 frames/sec for video sequences of 320$\times$240. Thereby, it provides satisfactory tracking results.

When ZigBee network supports beacon transmission mechanism, ZigBee devices have the restriction of the transmission range from the coordinator. On the contrary, when it does not support beacon transmission, it is not easy to save the energy through turning into sleep mode. This paper proposes active slot allocation method that allocates a transmission time and does not use the beacon transmission mechanism. It is based on the ZigBee's distributed address assignment mechanism and supports the scalability. This paper explains the active slot structure and the allocation order and describes the operation of ZigBee devices. We verify the proposed mechanism through the simulation and show the performance evaluation. It can be useful on the industrial automation and the environmental surveillance.

Omnidirectional camera system with a wide view angle is widely used in surveillance and robotics areas. In general, most of previous studies on estimating a projection model and the extrinsic parameters from the omnidirectional images assume corresponding points previously established among views. This paper presents a novel omnidirectional camera calibration based on automatic contour matching. In the first place, we estimate the initial parameters including translation and rotations by using the epipolar constraint from the matched feature points. After choosing the interested points adjacent to more than two contours, we establish a precise correspondence among the connected contours by using the initial parameters and the active matching windows. The extrinsic parameters of the omnidirectional camera are estimated minimizing the angular errors of the epipolar plane of endpoints and the inverse projected 3D vectors. Experimental results on synthetic and real images demonstrate that the proposed algorithm obtains more precise camera parameters than the previous method.

In active sonar field, a target detection and localization based on a distributed sensor network has been much studied for the underwater surveillance of the coast. Zhou et al. proposed a target localization method utilizing the positions of target-detected sensors in distributed sensor network which consists of detection-only sensors. In contrast with a conventional method, Zhou's method dose not require to estimate the propagation model parameters of detection signal. Also it needs the lower computational complexity, and to transmit less data between network nodes. However, it has large target localization error. So it has been modified for reducing localization error by Ryu. Modified Zhou's method has better estimation performance than Zhou's method, but still relatively large estimation error. In this paper, a target localization method based on modified Zhou's method is proposed for reducing the localization error. The proposed method utilizes the geometry of the positions of target-detected sensors and a line that represents the bearing of target, a line can be found by modified Zhou's method. This paper shows that the proposed method has better target position estimation performance than Zhou's and modified Zhou's method by computer simulations.

Action recognition is an essential task in computer vision due to the variety of prospective applications, such as security surveillance, machine learning, and human-computer interaction. The availability of more video data than ever before and the lofty performance of deep convolutional neural networks also make it essential for action recognition in video. Unfortunately, limited crafted video features and the scarcity of benchmark datasets make it challenging to address the multi-person action recognition task in video data. In this work, we propose a deep convolutional neural network-based Effective Hybrid Learning (EHL) framework for two-person interaction classification in video data. Our approach exploits a pre-trained network model (the VGG16 from the University of Oxford Visual Geometry Group) and extends the Faster R-CNN (region-based convolutional neural network a state-of-the-art detector for image classification). We broaden a semi-supervised learning method combined with an active learning method to improve overall performance. Numerous types of two-person interactions exist in the real world, which makes this a challenging task. In our experiment, we consider a limited number of actions, such as hugging, fighting, linking arms, talking, and kidnapping in two environment such simple and complex. We show that our trained model with an active semi-supervised learning architecture gradually improves the performance. In a simple environment using an Intelligent Technology Laboratory (ITLab) dataset from Inha University, performance increased to 95.6% accuracy, and in a complex environment, performance reached 81% accuracy. Our method reduces data-labeling time, compared to supervised learning methods, for the ITLab dataset. We also conduct extensive experiment on Human Action Recognition benchmarks such as UT-Interaction dataset, HMDB51 dataset and obtain better performance than state-of-the-art approaches.

Objectives: Active participation of poultry breeder in surveillance system of Avian Influenza (AI) is very important. Therefore this study was conducted to present basis data for active report of AI that is affected by media's coverage in poultry breeder. Methods: Subjects were 88 persons, 28 who were poultry breeder at epidemic area of AI and 60 who were general person at non-epidemic area. Data were collected by the trained investigator from Jul. 1 to Aug. 31, 2008. Respondents were interviewed by means of a structured questionnaire. Results: The third-person effect among perceptions of influence in media's report on the AI was higher in breeder (32.1%) than in non-breeder (10.0%). However, Confidence to media report on the AI was lower in breeder than in non-breeder. Intention to report of the AI was 71.4% in breeder respectively, was 90.0% in non-breeder. There was statistically significant lower in breeder than non-breeder. The cause of avoidance of report was 'economic damage' for 87.5%, which acocounted for the majority of cases. Confidence to media report on the AI were positively correlated with concern on the AI and perception on seriousness of the AI, but negatively correlated with the third-person effect. Conclusions: These results showed that intention to report of the AI of breeder was susceptible to influenced by the third person effect and confidence in media's report on the AI. Therefore we should give a special attention to increase active report of poultry breeder during epidemic period of AI which is consideration of reasonable strategy of media's coverage, including mind and emotion state of poultry breeder.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the socioeconomic costs resulting from alcohol drinking among adolescents as of 2006 from a societal perspective. Methods: The costs were classified into direct costs, indirect costs, and other costs. The direct costs consisted of direct medical costs and direct non-medical costs. The indirect costs were computed by future income losses from premature death, productivity losses from using medical services and reduction of productivity from drinking and hangover. The other costs consisted of property damage, public administrative expenses, and traffic accident compensation. Results: The socioeconomic costs of alcohol drinking among adolescents as of 2006 were estimated to be 387.5 billion won (0.05% of GDP). In the case of the former, the amount included 48.25% for reduction of productivity from drinking and hangover, 39.38% for future income losses from premature death, and 6.71% for hangover costs. Conclusions: The results showed that the socioeconomic costs of alcohol drinking among adolescents in Korea were a serious as compared with that of the United States. Therefore, the active interventions such as a surveillance system and a prevention program to control adolescents drinking by government and preventive medicine specialist are needed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate male adult' appearance management behavior according to objectified body consciousness. The subjects were 648 male adults aged from 20 to 59 and measuring instruments consisted of objectified body consciousness, appearance management behavior, and subjects' demographics attributions. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, factor analysis, cluster analysis, multiple response analysis, cross tabs analysis, ${\chi}^2$ test, and t-test. The results were as follows. First, 3 dimensions (body shame, body surveillance, and control belief) were emerged on objectified body consciousness, and subjects were divided into 2 groups (objectified group, and non-objectified group) by this variable. Second, male adults were deeply aware of the need of appearance management, and showed the high level of intention to perform appearance management behavior. Third, objectified group showed much more active appearance management behavior than non-objectified group. This results concluded that objectified body consciousness is a very useful variable to understand male adult' appearance management behavior.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) colonization rate in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), associated risk factors and clinical outcomes for VRE colonization. Methods: Of the 7,703 patients admitted to the ICUs between January, 2008 and December, 2010, medical records of 554 VRE colonized and 503 uncolonized patients were reviewed retrospectively. To analyzed the impact of colonization on patients' clinical outcomes, 199 VRE colonized patients were matched with 199 uncolonized patients using a propensity score matching method. Results: During the study period, 567 (7.2%) of the 7,703 patients were colonized with VRE. Multivariate analysis identified the following independent risk factors for VRE colonization: use of antibiotics (odds ratio [OR]=3.33), having bedsores (OR=2.92), having invasive devices (OR=2.29), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus co-colonization (OR=1.84), and previous hospitalization (OR=1.74). VRE colonized patients were more likely to have infectious diseases than uncolonized patients. VRE colonization was associated with prolonged hospitalization and higher mortality. Conclusion: Strict infection control program including preemptive isolation for high-risk group may be helpful. Further research needs to be done to investigate the effects of active surveillance program on the incidence of colonization or infection with VRE in the ICU.

In this paper, we propose a novel compact surveillance throwing robot which has an omnidirectional shock absorption mechanism and an active control part of wheel treads to stabilize the dynamic posture of a miniature sphere type throwing robot. This throwing robot, which weighs 1.14kg and is 110mm in height, is designed in a spherical shape to be easily grabbed for throwing. Also, the omnidirectional shock absorbing aspect is designed using several leaf springs connected with inner and outer wheels. The wheel treads control part consists of a link mechanism. Through the field experiments, this robot is validated to withstand higher than 17Ns of omnidirectional impulse and increase the stabilized max speed three times from 11 rad/s to 33rad/s by increasing wheel treads.
