  • In this paper, we proposed an omnidirectional ranging system that is able to obtain $360^{\circ}$ all directional distances effectively based on structured light image. The omnidirectional ranging system consists of laser structured light source and a catadioptric omnidirectional camera with a curved mirror. The proposed integro-differential structured light image processing algorithm makes the ranging system robust against environmental illumination condition. The omnidirectional ranging system is useful for map-building and self-localization of a mobile robot.

  • Graphene has received attention with its high electron mobility and visual transparency as a promising material for optoelectronic and photonic applications. Combination of graphene and conducting nanostructures i.e. plasmonic structures has recently been researched for enhancing light-matter interaction and overcoming diffraction limit of light. Here we show enhanced photodetection of incoherent visible light with graphene-mediated plasmonics. Gold nanoparticles fabricated by focused ion beam was used as an active element of photodetection and graphene was utilized as an interfacing material between nanostructures and electrodes. Hot electrons generated upon plasmon decay within nanoparticles pass over the potential barrier between nanostructure and graphene and give rise to a photocurrent with built-in electric field. We report 76.7% enhancement of photocurrent under resonant irradiation of fiber-coupled halogen lamp compared to the case without light illumination. We showed wavelength-dependent current response arisen from plasmonic nanostructure, providing a good agreement with theoretical calculation.

  • To avoid influences caused by pose, illumination and facial expression variations, we propose a robust three-step algorithm based on ASM and POEM for facial landmark localization. Firstly, Model Selection Factor is utilized to achieve a pose-free initialized shape. Then, we use the global shape model of ASM to describe the whole face and the texture model POEM to adjust the position of each landmark. Thirdly, a second localization is presented to discriminatively refine the subtle shape variation for some organs and contours. Experiments are conducted in four main face datasets, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method accurately localizes facial landmarks and outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.

  • The flow characteristics of a NACA0012 airfoil was investigated in rectangular water circulating channel. The flow patterns around an airfoil at various angles of attack between $0^{\circ}\;and\;30^{\circ}\;at\;Re=1.91{\times}104$ were visualized and measured with 2-D PIV system and laser sheet illumination. Flow behaviors such as velocity distribution, kinetic energy and flow separation etc. around an airfoil were obtained by means of 2-D PIV system. The behaviors show the difference of flow pattern clearly and separation phenomena become more active with increasing angle of attack.

  • This paper describes preliminary results we have obtained in developing a computer vision system based on active IR illumination for real time gaze tracking for interactive graphic display. Unlike most of the existing gaze tracking techniques, which often require assuming a static head to work well and require a cumbersome calibration process fur each person, our gaze tracker can perform robust and accurate gaze estimation without calibration and under rather significant head movement. This is made possible by a new gaze calibration procedure that identifies the mapping from pupil parameters to screen coordinates using the Generalized Regression Neural Networks (GRNN). With GRNN, the mapping does not have to be an analytical function and head movement is explicitly accounted for by the gaze mapping function. Furthermore, the mapping function can generalize to other individuals not used in the training. The effectiveness of our gaze tracker is demonstrated by preliminary experiments that involve gaze-contingent interactive graphic display.

  • A halophilic archaeon, Halobacterium salinarum, exhibits phototactic behaviors, by which the organism is guided to red-orange light and evades shorter wavelengths of light. The phototaxis is mediated by two retinal proteins, sensory rhodopsin I and II (SRI and SRII), whose structures are analogous to the cognate protein bacteriorhodopsin, a light-driven proton pump. SRI mediates both attractant and repellent swimming behaviors to orange light and near- UV light, respectively. The two different signaling through the single photoreceptor have been ascribed to the presence of two active structures of SRI (S$\_$373/ and P$\_$520), which are produced upon orange light illumination of SRI and upon subsequent near-UV illumination of S$\_$373/, respectively. In the present study, we have measured the difference FTIR spectra of S$\_$373/ and P$\_$520/ states. In P$\_$520/, the isomeric structure of the chromophore is assignable to all-trans, and the Schiff base of the chromophore is protonated with concomitant deprotonation of Asp76, a combination which allows for the formation of a salt bridge between them. It was suggested that the way of interaction between the Schiff base and the counterion, which is different among SRI$\_$587/, S$\_$373/ and P$\_$520/ and which has been shown to drive the conformational changes in the cognate protein, bacteriorhodopsin, is the key to controlling conformational changes for the attractant and the repellent signaling by SRI.

  • The research for the improvement in math and science scores is active by the brain exercises, stress reliefs, and emotion sensitized illuminations. This principle is based on the following facts that the most effective brain turns are supported with the circumstances not only when the brain wave should keep stability and comfort in science criticism, but also when minimized stress and comfortable illumination should be adjusted in solving math problem. In this paper, in order to effectively learn mathematics and science, the most optimized simulating tests in learning conditions are conducted by using a stress relief. However, depending on the users' tastes, the effectiveness on favorite music or colors therapy have no convergency but many differentiations. Therefore, in this paper, in order to solve this problem, the proposed optimal illumination and music therapy treatment using fuzzy inference method.

  • A photoresponse that results in organisms dispersing from a region of bright light. generally termed photodispersal, is frequently observed in some fishes notably including mud fish (Misgurunus mizolepis G${\"{U}}$NTHER). The primary assumption for this study was that the photodispersion may result from the behavioral strategies of fishes aimed to avoid illumination conditions that could injure the cells in skin tissues via photodynamic sensitization reactions. Here we present some preliminary results that seem to support this assumption : (1) the locomotive action of dark-adapted mud fish was triggered by the onset of illumination with light : (2) blue light (400-500nm) was much more effective in bringing about the locomotive activity than yellow (550-650nm) and red (650-800nm) lights : (3) two blue light absorbing pigments, which photogenerate activated oxygen species, were separated from the skin tissues of mud fish, one of these being identified as riboflavin.
