As the engine design change to get high efficiency and performance of commercial diesel engine, surface wear of the cam follower becomes an important issues as applied load increasing at the contact face between cam follower and cam. Purpose of this study is the developing of the ceramic cam follower made of silicon nitride ceramic which is more wear resistant than the cast iron and sintered cam follower. Ceramic cam follower was made by direct brazing of thin ceramic disk to steel can follower body using active bracing alloy. Effect of joining condition on the interfacial phases and joining strength wer examined at bvarious joining temperatures, times, and cooling rates. Crowning resulted from the difference of thermal expansion coefficient after direct brazing without using any stress-relieving inter layer was measured. Interfacial phases are mainly titanium silicide and titanium nitride which are the products between active metal(Ti) in brazing alloy and silicon nitiride. Maximum joining strength of the ceramic metal joint, measured by DBS method, was 334MPa. Crowning(R) of the prototype ceramic cam follower was 1595mm. As machining for crowning is not necessary, production cost can be reduced.
In this study, active metal brazing methods for $ZrO_2$ and Ti alloy were discussed. To get a successful metal-ceramic bonding, various factors (melting temperature, corrosion, sag resistance, thermal expansion coefficient etc. of base materilas and filler metal) should be considered. Moreover, in order to clarify bonding between the metal and ceramic, the mechanism of the interfacial structure of the joints should be identified. The driving force for the formation of metal and ceramic interfaces is the reduction of the free energy which occurs when their contact becomes complete. Interfacial bonding depends on the material combinations and the bonding processes. This study describes the bonding between ceramic and metal in an active metal brazing.
Joining of NiO-YSZ to 316 stainless steel was carried out with B-Ni2 brazing alloy (3 wt% Fe, 4.5 wt% Si, 3.2 wt% B, 7 wt% Cr, Ni-balance, m.p. 971-$999^{\circ}C$) to seal the NiO-YSZ anode/316 stainless steel interconnect structure in a SOFC. In the present research, interfacial (chemical) reactions during brazing at the NiO-YSZ/316 stainless steel interconnect were enhanced by the two processing methods, a) addition of an electroless nickel plate to NiO-YSZ as a coating or b) deposition of titanium layer onto NiO-YSZ by magnetron plasma sputtering method, with process variables and procedures optimized during the pre-processing. Brazing was performed in a cold-wall vacuum furnace at $1080^{\circ}C$. Post-brazing interfacial morphologies between NiO-YSZ and 316 stainless steel were examined by SEM and EDS methods. The results indicate that B-Ni2 brazing filler alloy was fused fully during brazing and continuous interfacial layer formation depended on the method of pre-coating NiO-YSZ. The inter-diffusion of elements was promoted by titanium-deposition: the diffusion reaction thickness of the interfacial area was reduced to less than 5 ${\mu}m$ compared to 100 ${\mu}m$ for electroless nickel-deposited NiO-YSZ cermet.

The present study has shown that the effect of boron and phosphorus in Ni-Cr-Si-X alloy to interfacial reactions and bonding strength of diamond-steel substrate, and the influence of various construction parameters on the formation of the topography of the tool. And these factors are required to making a good brazed tool. The microstructures and phase change of the brazed region were analyzed into SEM, EDS. According to the electron probe microanalysis, while brazing, the chromium present in the brazing alloy segregated preferentially to the surface of the diamond to form a chromium rich reaction product, which was readily wetted by the alloy.
As a filler metal for lowering the melting point of Ag, many alloy metal candidates have emerged, such as cadmium, with zinc, manganese, nickel, and titanium as active metals. However, since cadmium is known to be harmful to the human body, Cd-free filler metals are now mainly used. Still, no study has been conducted comparing the characteristics of joints prepared with and without cadmium. In addition, studies have yet to be conducted comparing the typical characteristics of brazing filler metals with special structures, and the joint characteristics of brazing filler metals with available frames. In this study, the characteristics of junctions of silver-based intercalation metals were compared based on the type of filler metal additives, using a special structure, a filler metal sandwich structure, to protect the internal base metal. The general filler metal was compared using the structure, and the thickness of the filler metal according to the thickness was reached. A comparison of the characteristics of the junction was conducted to identify the characteristics of an intersection of silver-based brazing filler metal and the effect on joint strength. Each filler metal's collective tensile strength was measured, and the relationship between joint characteristics and tensile joint strength was explored. The junction was estimated through micro strength measurement, contact angle measurement with the base metal when the filler metal was melted, XRD image observation, composition analysis for each phase through SEM-EDS, and microstructure phase acquisition.
The reactions between an active metal brazing alloy and interlayers together with the effects of interlayer type on the interfacial microstructure change were investiaged for silicon nitride/stainless steel joint. The bending strengths were measured for joints with Mo, Cu, Ni interlayer type of different thicknesses. It was found that the interlayer with a low yield strength value is effective to improve the bending strength of the Si3N4/stainless steel joint. The maximum joint strength obtained at room temperature for a laminated Cu/Mo interlayer was about 460 MPa. The combined use of Mo and thin Cu layer was found to be effective in enhancing the bending strength for the Si3N4/S.S.316 joint.
The joining methods of ceramics to metals which can be expected to obtain high temperature strength are mainly classified into the solid-state diffusion bonding method and the active brazing method. Between these two, the solid-state diffusion bonding method is given attentions as substituting method for active brazing method due to being capable of obtaining higher bonding strength at high temperature and accurate bonding. In this paper, the solid-state diffusion bonding of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ ceramics to Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steel (SNCM21) using insert metal was carried out. The insert metal employed in this study was experimentally home-made, Ag-Cu-Ti alloy. Influence of several bonding parameters of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$SNCM21 joint was quantitatively evaluated by bonding strength test, and microstructural analyses at the interlayer were performed by SEM/EDX. From above experiments, the optimum bonding condition of the solid-state diffusion bonding of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/SNCM21 using Ag-Cu-Ti insert metal was determined. Futhermore, high temperature strength and thermal-shock properties of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/SNCM21 joint were also examined. The results obtained are as follows. 1. The maximum bonding strength was obtained at the temperature of 95% melting point of insert metal. 2. The high temperature strength of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/SNCM21 joint appeared to bemaximum value at test temperature 500.deg.C and the bonding strength with increasingtemperature showed parabolic curve. 3. The strength of thermal-shocked specimens was far deteriorated than those of as-bonded specimens. Especially, water-quenched specimen after heated up to 600.deg. C was directly fractured in quenching.
Bonding technology and bonding mechanism of metal to ceramic including brazing, diffusion bonding, friction welding and etc were reviewed in this study. Various factors should be considered from a bonding design step to acquire a good bonding joint because of a large difference between metal and ceramic in crystal lattice, coefficient of thermal expansion and various properties. In addition, metal and ceramic bonding technologies are constantly being developed according to precise components, multi-function and application to harsh environment. However, improvement of bonding properties and bonding reliability also should be accompanied. Bonding of ceramics, such as $ZrO_2$, $Ti_3AlC_2$ and SiC, to metals like Ti-alloy, TiAl and steel were described in this paper.
