  • In this paper, a planar directional beam-switchable antenna with four orthogonal beam directions is proposed. The proposed antenna is designed with two crossed active elements and two parasitic elements for each direction. The design methodology is described on the basis of the Yagi-Uda method for the active and parasitic elements, respectively. By adjusting the effective electric lengths of the parasitic elements, the roles of a director and a reflector are exchanged with each other. The planar four-way beam-switchable Yagi-Uda antenna is implemented. From the experimental results. The proposed design method is verified for orthogonal radiation beam switching.

  • In this paper, a Ka-band high-output active phased array antenna device applicable to small radars and seekers was designed, and the improved performance was studied. The radiation device assembly consists of 1x8 arrangements, and the step flared notch antenna type. It shows low active reflection loss characteristics in broadband, and low loss characteristics by applying the air-strip feeding structure, and is designed to enable beam steering up to 45 degrees. The TRM(transmit receive module) output power is more than 2.0W per channel using GaN HPA in the transmitting path, and satisfies more than 25.0 dB gain and less than 6.0 dB noise figure in the receiving path. Accordingly, the Effective Isotropically Radiated Power(EIRP) of the antenna unit shows the performance of 0.00 dB or more and the receive gain-to-noise temperature ratio(G/T) of 0.00 dB/k or more. For demonstration, we have designed aforementioned planar array antenna which consists of 64 radiating elements having a size within 130 mm x 130 mm x 300 mm and weight of less than 4.9 kg..

  • This paper presents an X-band (9.375 GHz) $1{\times}2$ array microstrip antenna which is capable of active beam compensation for installation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). First of all, a basic $1{\times}2$ array microstrip antenna incorporated with wilkinson power divider was designed and performance of the array antenna was verified. Next, to verify beam steering performance of the designed array microstrip antenna, we fabricated a phase shifter, and the wilkinson power divider as module structure and measured characteristics of beam steering according to phase shifting. The main lobe is 0.6 dBi at $0^{\circ}$, and the side lobe decreased 18.8 dB. The reliable radiation pattern was achieved. Finally, an active beam steering microstrip array antenna attached with the phase shifter and the power divider on the back side of the antenna was designed and fabricated to install wing of UAV for compactness. The maximum gain is 0.1 dBi. Therefore, we obtained a basic antenna technology for compensating beam error according to wing deformation of an UAV installed array antennas.

  • As the latest weapon systems and electronic equipments are increasingly demanding stealth technology to improve the survivability of allies, it is necessary to implement low-observability technology that reduces the radar cross section(RCS). In order to implement this stealth technology, a method for low RCS characteristics by applying a shape design or a electromagnetic wave absorber is widely used. However, active phased array antennas have structural limitations in shape design, also when a absorber is applied to it, the performance of the antenna is degraded. Therefore, in this paper, in order to realize the low RCS characteristics of the active phased array antenna operating in the X-band, individual radiating elements suitable for applying the radio wave absorber were selected, and a 13x13 array antenna was designed and manufactured. Next, by comparing the measured results of the relative RCS and electrical performance for the manufactured antenna according to the presence and type of the absorber, it is shown that the electrical performance is maintained at an equal or higher level while obtaining the low RCS characteristics. Thereby the method proposed in this paper for implementing the low RCS characteristics was validated. Finally, it was confirmed that when the wave absorber is applied to the array antenna, the limitation of its performance deterioration can be overcome.

  • This paper describes the pattern synthesis of array antenna which conforms to a metallic curved surface formed by the rotation of a quadratic function by using EAGA(Enhanced Adaptive Genetic Algorithm). Three rotated-type conformal surfaces are realized by changing the coefficient of the quadratic function and the pattern of each conformal array antenna is synthesized. In order to reduce the overall time of pattern synthesis, the transformed active element pattern obtained by the active element pattern of the 2-dimensional planar array using Euler angles rotation is utilized instead of the active element pattern of the 3-dimensional conformal array antenna itself. To verify validity of the proposed synthesis procedure, the synthesized patterns using EAGA are compared with those obtained by MWS.

  • In this paper, a compact doppler sensor with oscillator type active antenna operating at 2.4GHz frequency band is proposed to measure the distance to a moving object. The oscillation frequency is shifted depending on approaching of the object, and a detection circuit discriminates the frequency deviation. The active antenna has been designed and simulated. The prototype fabricated has a small circular disk type of diameter 30mm and height 4.2mm. As for antenna performance, broadside radiation pattern with beamwidth of $120^{\circ}$ and oscillation frequency of 2.35GHz has been measured. Test results as a range sensor shows that signal voltage of about 240mV has been obtained for conducting plate moving 1 meter away from the sensor. And, signal voltage has been linearly increased to the ground from 5m height by free-falling the sensor.
