In this study, we have tried to find the maximum microbial efficiency at the various dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration conditions in the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater. Experiments of activated sludge process were performed to examine the relation between microbial activity and DO concentration in a continuous bioreactor. The reduction rate of COD (chemical oxygen demand) was low at the DO concentration between 0 ppm and 1.0 ppm, but it went higher and showed maximum between 1.5 ppm and 3.0 ppm. Then the COD reduction rate was quickly decreased above the DO concentration of 3.0 ppm.
A denitrifying polyphosphate-accumulating bacterium (YKP-9) was isolated from activated sludge of a 5-stage biological nutrient removal process with step feed system. This organism was a Gram-negative, coccus-shaped, facultative aerobic chemoorganotroph. It had a respiratory type of metabolism with oxygen, nitrate, and nitrite as terminal electron acceptors. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain YKP-9 was most similar to the 16S rRNA gene sequence of Paracoccus sp. OL18 (AY312056) (similarity level, 97%). Denitrifying polyphosphate accumulation by strain YKP-9 was examined under anaerobic-anoxic and anaerobic-oxic batch conditions. It was able to use external carbon sources for polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA) synthesis and to release phosphate under anaerobic condition. It accumulated polyphosphate and grew a little on energy provided by external carbon sources under anoxic condition, but did neither accumulate polyphosphate nor grow in the absence of external carbon sources under anoxic condition. Cells with intracellular PHA cannot accumulate polyphosphate in the absence of external carbon sources under anoxic condition. Under oxic condition, it grew but could not accumulate polyphosphate with external carbon sources. Based on the results from this study, strain YKP-9 is a new-type denitrifying polyphosphate-accumulating bacterium that accumulates polyphosphate only under anoxic condition, with nitrate and nitrite as the electron acceptors in the presence of external carbon sources.
An efficient Treatment of animal wastewater is one of the hot issues for preventing the environmental pollution. It should be established the design parameter in order to purify the animal wastewater. A test is carried on in the pilot plant as a simplified activated sludge process. A vibration sieve separator is deviced to keep the pollution load constant by means of separation of solid matter. The BOD removal efficiency of the vibration sieve showed over 50%. As the test results, the BOD contents of the influent was in average of 3,000 mg/I and that of the effluent 85 mg/I. So, the BOD removal rate showed 97% in average. The SS-contents in the primary chamber was about 3,300 mg/I and that of effluent 92 mg/I. The SS removal efficiency showed 97%. The removal rate of total nitrogen and phosphore were in average of 82% respectively. Carrying out in winter season, it showed relatively good results; The design parameter approved in this test can be applied to the full-time farmers.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of photocatalysis using $TiO_2$ and UV applied for the COD reduction of wastewater in linerboard mill. Trials were done to obtain the optimum addition amounts of $TiO_2$ and $H_2O_2$ to the wastewater and find an appropriate pH condition for photocatalysis on $TiO_2$ for degrading COD. The photocatalytic reaction was applied to the wastewater collected after secondary activated sludge treatment in WWTP of linerboard mill. The optimum application of photocatalysis reaction was obtained under the addition conditions of 2 g/L of $TiO_2$ and 200 mg/L of $H_2O_2$ at pH 3.0, respectively. The removal efficiency of $SCOD_{Cr}$ by photocatalytic treatment was 86.4 % and higher than Fenton treatment in which removal efficiency was 67.4 %. It was concluded that the photocatalytic process using $TiO_2$ and UV could be applied to the wastewater treatment in linerboard mill and also to the dramatic drop-off in NBDCOD load from wastewater of tertiary treatment in WWTP.
Comamonas sp. AEBL-85 was isolated from microbial granules in an activated sludge process of long-term operated for the treatment of reactive azo dye, and characterized its capability to decolorize Reactive Black 5. The effects of adding carbon source and nitrogen source on the extent of decol-orization were analyzed to develop an optimal medium. The optimum initial pH and temperature wire 6.0 and 35$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Reactive Black 5 of 50 mg/l was readily decolorized up to 95% within 40 hr by Comamonas sp. AEBL-85.
Produced water is the largest wastestream of oil and gas exploration. It consists of various organic and inorganic compounds that hinder its beneficial use. This study compared the treatment of produced water in a batch suspended and biofilm activated sludge process. The biofilm carrier material was made from Gardenia Carinata shell. COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $NO_3-N$ removal was monitored in both the suspended (control) and floating carrier bioreactors. The results show a rapid reduction of produced water constituents in the floating carrier bioreactor. COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $NO_3-N$ removal was in the range of 99%, 98% and 97% for the floating carrier bioreactor whereas it was 88%, 84% and 83% for the control bioreactor. The rapid reduction of COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $NO_3-N$ clearly indicate that the floating carrier materials served as an attached growth medium for microorganisms, improved the breakdown of produced water constituents and reduced inhibition of microbial metabolic activities.

This study was undertaken to see the effect of the addition of residential sewage to cosmetic plant wastewater on the aeration time for COD stabilization of the mixture in a bioreactor. Various range of mixing-ratio samples were tested to find the optimal mixing ratio. The combined result of measured COD and the minimum aeration time was desirable when the sewage portion was 80%. It was found that the addition of residential sewage to cosmetic plant wastewater itself reduced the measured COD of the mixture without any further treatment. And during the aeration COD was reduced with increasing the portion of the sewage. These results show that the aeration time for COD stabilization can be reduced by pro-mixing of residential sewage and the cosmetic plant wastewater.

Adsorption properties were estimated for the organic silicon compounds (siloxanes) in an actual landfill gas (LFG) using adsorbents such as coconut activated carbon, coal activated carbon, silica gel, sulfur adsorbent, carbonized sludge, and molecular sieve 13X. Coconut activated carbon showed the highest removal efficiency of more than 95%. The desorption of hexamethyldisiloxane (L2) from the adsorbent, however, resulted in the remarkable concentration variation of the compound in the treated gas. Silica gel, which had high adsorption capacity for L2 in single substance adsorption experiment in the other study, could not remove the component in the actual landfill gas while it adsorbed well octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) in the LFG. Therefore the elimination of hexamethyldisiloxane is an important factor to determine the level of total organosilicon compound in pretreated landfill gas. Moreover, the L2 from the actual landfill gas was effectively adsorbed by the serial adsorption test using two columns packed with coconut activated carbon which has the great capacity of siloxanes removal among others. In order to utilize efficiently LFG as a renewable energy, the emission and adsorptive characteristics of the substance to be treated should be considered for the organization, operation, and management of pretreatment process.

The slow degradation rate of sewage sludge in anaerobic digesters is due to the rate limiting step of sludge hydrolysis. Therefore, the pre-treatment process had been carried out using acidic(pH 1.5, 3, 4, 5) and alkaline(pH9, 10, 13), thermal(50, 100, 150, $200^{\circ}C$) and ultrasonic treatment(400W, 20kHz, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 50, 60min). In the best conditions of each treatment, the SCOD ratio(%) of treated/untreared samples were increased 102% in acid(pH5), 986% in alkali(pH13), 959% in thermal($200^{\circ}C$) and 1123% in ultrasonic(35min) treatment. As the result, the ultrasonic treatment was most effective, followed by alkali, thermal, acidic treatment. In the effects of total gas productivity, the thermal($200^{\circ}C$) pretreatment was the highest, followed by thermal($150^{\circ}C$), ultrasonic(90min), alkaline(pH9) and ultrasonic(50min).
Currently an increase in domestic sewage and industrial wastewater causes serious water pollution in Korea. To solve water pollution problems, conventional activated sludge (CAS) system is generally used in wastewater treatment plant but this process is so ineffective in nitrogen and phosphorus. Even if CAS system is the major process, it must be improved instantly so as to remove nitrogen and phosphorus. Otherwise, the serious water pollution problems can't be resolved with CAS system. Therefore this study focused on the comparison of the treatment characteristics between ASA system and CAS system. And also the mass balance of each process of ASA system. The results from operating advanced step aeration (ASA) system indicated that the removal efficiency of BOD, COD, and SS was 89.9%, 74.5%, and 89.0% respectively. In comparison, the removal efficiency of BOD, COD, and SS for CAS system was 89.5%, 71.8%, and 89.5% respectively. In addition to the results, the TN removal efficiency of ASA system was 76.5% comparing to 32.7% of CAS system. It was concluded that the TN removal efficiency of ASA system was 44% higher than CAS system. And the TP removal efficiency was 81.4% in ASA system comparing to 25.2% in CAS system. It also means that over 56% of TP was removed in ASA system comparing to CAS system.
