In this study, sewage were treated with operating Two-step Aeration System and conventional activated sludge process together in a condition. At the same HRT 8hr of Two-step Aeration System and Activated Sludge Process, BOD treatment efficiency of 1st sedimentation basin effluent 36.9% by Two-step Aeration system was 12.3% higher than 24.65 by Activated Sludge Process and the COD treatment efficiency 39.8% by two-step Aeration System was 11.6.3% higher than 28.2% by Activated Sludge Process. BOD and COD treatment efficiencies of 2nd sedimentation basin effluent were 88.1% and 85.6% Two-step Aeration System and were 83.8% and 82.3% Activated Sludge Process. In the first treatment, as BOD was relatively removed a lot, F/M ratio 0.17, $0.21{\cdot}BOD/kg{\cdot}MLSS.d$ was maintained by Activated Sludge Process. Therefore it was proved that organic matter treatment efficiency by Two-step Aeration System os Higher than by Activated Sludge Process in a aeration time 8hr. $NH_4^{+}-N$ treatment efficiencies were 55.5% by Two-step Aeration System and 39.75 by Activated sludge Process. $NO_3^{-}-N$ concentration in 2nd. sedimentation basin effluent were 3.33% by Two-step Aeration System and 2.36% by Activated Sludge Process. From this result, Two-step Aeration System was proved more advantageous treatment process for nitrification than Activated Sludge Process. The fluctuation range of BOD, COD and SS concentration in 2nd sedimentation basin effluent $16~33mg/{\ell}$, $15~23mg/{\ell}$ and $14~22mg/{\ell}$ by Two-step Aeration System was smaller than $16~57mg/{\ell}$, $15~25mg/{\ell}$ by Activated sludge Process. Overall the fluctuation range in 2nd sediment basin effluent by was smaller than by Activated Sludge Process. As a result, it is possible for this Two-step Aeration with no facility investment and a little of operation condition change in a conventional sewage treatment plant to get stability and nitrification of treatment water quality.
Our life totally depends on activated sludgeprocess for treatment of wastewater: sewage and industrial wastewater. Activated sludge process was the epoch-making technology in Environmental field. One century has been almost passed since the process was developed in England, and the process is still on the development of improvement. Here, history of activated sludge process, its mechanismsof treating the wastewater, expectations that we had on the process in the past, and future image and possibility on the process were presented. By reviewing the events related to the process, we can foresee potentials for new possibility of activated sludge process.
Wastewater was treated by two different treatment processes; activated sludge process and advanced wastewater treatment process (KNR process) using lab-scale experiment. Two treated wastewater showed good treatment efficiency of organic matter removal, up to 90% removal. Nitrogen and phosphorus were not effectively removed though activated sludge process, while KNR process showed good removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus; 56% nitrogen removal and 95% phosphorus removal. KNR process showed better removal efficiency of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus compared to activated sludge process. Organic matter characterization was tracked though measurement of UV scan, SUVA, and XAD fractionation. Treated wastewater showed higher SUVA value than wastewater influent, indicting less aromatic characteristic of organic matter. XAD fractionation showed hydrophilic fraction decreased though wastewater treatment, suggesting microbes preferentially digest hydrophilic and aliphatic molecules rather than hydrophobic and aromatic molecules of organic matter.
In order to treat effectively various type of wastewater discharged from the manufacture factory of organic phosphorous agricultural pesticides by the activated sludge process. The acclimation test of sludge was carried out by the dilution of completely mixed raw wastewater. The results of experiment were obstained as follows. 1. The moderate dilution rate of mixed raw wastewater was founded to about 30 times. 2. The available range of BOD-SS loading was 0.1~0.15 $kg\cdot BOD/kg\cdot SS\cdot day$ and it was similar to the case of extended aeration activated sludge process. 3. After the acclimation of activated sludge, the concentration of MLSS was 2000 mg/L, removal efficiency of BOD more than 90%, and SVI 100, respectively. 4. The oxygen respiratory rate of acclimated sludge was $47 mg\cdot O_2/g\cdot hr$ and this was increased about 5 times than $10 mg\cdot O_2/g\cdot hr$ of ordinary sludge.
Isolation of pollutant-degrading bacteria is important in bioaugmentation, one of the methods for biological degradation of environmental contaminants. We focused on the magnetic activated sludge (MAS) process as a culture method that efficiently concentrates degrading bacteria, and cultured activated sludge with 1,4-dioxane as a model pollutant. After 860 days of operation, MLVSS, which indicates the amount of sludge, increased from 390 mg/L to 10,000 mg/L, and the removal rate of organic matter including 1,4-dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, and glucose in the artificial wastewater reached up to 97%. Based on these results, the MAS process was successfully used to acclimate activated sludge with 1,4-dioxane. Bacterial flora analysis in the MAS showed that bacteria of the genus Pseudonocardia, already reported as 1,4-dioxane degrading bacteria, play an important role in the degradation of this pollutant. The MAS process is a suitable culture method for acclimation of environmental pollutants, and the findings indicate that it can be used as an enrichment unit for pollutant-degrading bacteria.
Most of biological treatment to remove contaminants in municipal wastewater have been conducted by activated sludge process. But, the process have several probIems such as enormous site needed for construction of treatment facilities, unstable treatment due to limited ability to control load fluctuation, frequent sludge bulking and appearance of lots of surplus sludge. In this study, the experiments were performed through submerging biofilm of PEPP media in existing aeration tank with raw water from municipal wastewater treatment plant and then submerging PVDC and PEPP media, different from shape and chemical peculiarity in anoxic reactor. Throughout the experience, nutrient removal efficiency according to HRT, nitrogen phosphorous removal efficiency, behavior of nitrogen and dewatering efficiency have been compared and analysed with those of activated sludge process. As the results, BOD removal efficiency according to BOD volumetric load and F/M ratio was not found any differency in two processes, but was decreased below 90% as going along the condition of high load in activated sludge process. Kinetic coefficient was $K_{max}=1.162day^{-1}$, $K_s=53.77mg/L$, $Y=0.166mgVSS/mgBOD_{rem}$. and $K_d=0.019day^{-1}$. It was found that the removal efficiency, even though in aerobic condition, in biofilm process equipped anoxic reactor was higher than the one in activated sludge process within the range of 70~80%, and became better as HRT increased. Phosphorous removal efficiency was not found any differency in two processes. In biofilm process, treament efficiency even in conditions of high load was not decreased, because the biomass concentration could be maintained in high condition compared with activated sludge process. As HRT increased, suspended and attached biomass was increased and the other hand, F/M ratio was decreased as biomass' increasing. Biomass thickness was increased. from $10.43{\mu}m$ to $10.55{\mu}m$ as HRT increased and density of biomass within $40.79{\sim}41.16mg/cm^2$. The results also present that the dewatering efficiency of sludge generated in biofilm process was higher than in activated sludge process, and became better as HRT increased.
In this paper, an application of fuzzy-neuron reasoning to the control of an activated sludge plant is presented. The activated sludge process is widely used in modern wastewater treatment plants. The operation control of the activated sludge process, however, is difficult due to the following reasons : 1)The complexity of the wastewater components, 2)the change of the wastewater influent, and 3)the adjustment errors in the control process. Because of these reasons, it is difficult to obtain mathematical model that really reflect the relationship between the variables and parameters in the process of wastewater treatment correctively and effectively. In this paper, the activated sludge process(A.S.P.) is modeled by a new fuzzy-neuron network representing nonlinear characteristics. These fuzzy-neurons have fuzzy rules with complementary membership function. Based on the constructed model, graphic simulator on X-window system as a graphic integrated environment is implemented. The efficacy of the proposed control scheme was evaluated and demonstrated by means of the field test.
An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the potential of flotation process for the secondary clarifier of an activated sludge process. Flotation techniques, applied in this study, include electrofloation (EF) which generated fine bubbles smaller than $35{\mu}m$ in average and diffuser flotation (DF) which generated fine bubbles smaller than $55{\mu}m$ in average. The batch experiments were done with activated sludge displaying various characteristics. It was shown that the efficiency of solids/liquid separation was reduced as the diluted sludge volume index ($DSVI_{30}$) of activated sludge increased. The dependency, however, gradually decreased as the gas to solids (G/S) ratio increased. Thickening efficiency of EF was more than 2~10 times and DF process was more than 1.5~5 times as compared with gravity sedimentation (GS). Stable sludge blanket was maintained regardless of sludge settleability when the G/S ratio was 0.019 in the EF. On the other hand, Serious deterioration in the sludge blanket was observed in the DF depends on G/S ratio and sludge settleability. And For EF and DF, the suspended solids concentration of effluent was not nearly influenced on settleability of activated sludge and more clear than GS. A biological nutrient removal (BNR) process, combined with EF as a secondary clarifier was operated for three months. The mean MLSS (mixed liquid suspended solids) concentration in the reactor and mean solids concentration of return sludge were estimated to be 5,340 mg/L and 16,770 mg/L, respectively. The water quality of effluent was considerably stable and low value was accomplished, that was, standard suspended solids concentration $0.07{\pm}0.51mg/L$ and standard turbidity $1.44{\pm}0.56NTU$. The EF could be applicable for enhancement of efficiency of activated sludge system as well as improvement of the water quality of effluent.
Intermittently aerated activated sludge process was applied as a water reuse process of $70m^3/day$ for the upgrade of organic, nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency and clarifier performance. After application of the intermittently aeration, removal efficiency of BOD, SS, T-N and T-P were achieved 95%, 90%, 80% and 60%, respectively. Removal efficiencies in intermittently aerated process were considerably increased. comparing to those of continuously aerated activated sludge process. Also sludge rising problem in clarifier was improved. Average concentration of supplied reusing water were BOD 5 mg/L, turbidity 4 NTU and after chlorination, residual chlorine 0.4 mg/L, coliform 0 MPN/100mL. Intermittently aerated activated sludge process could be one of the best alternative process for the retrofit of conventional activated sludge process for the removal of nutrient in water reuse system.
In this study, anaerobic digestion, electro-oxidation and electro-fenton oxidation processes were investigated to reduce oily refinery sludge. Anaerobic digestion process was not suitable for oily activated sludge reduction because of characteristics itself and, as experimental results revealed, reduction efficiency was low for electro-oxidation process. However, 40% total suspended solid reduction of oily activated sludge was obtained by electro-fenton oxidation process, operating at pH=1, 0.5 A and $Fe^{2+}$:$H_2O_2$ ratio = 1:30. In addition, higher reduction efficiency was obtained as reaction time was increased (30, 60, 90, 120 min) despite of low $H_2O_2$ concentration. From the results, it has been investigated that electro-fenton oxidation is efficient process for oily activated sludge reduction.
