Carbon membrane materials have received considerable attention for the gas separation including hydrocarbon mixture of ingredients of the volatile organic compounds(VOCs) because they possess their higher selectivity, permeability, and thermal stability than the polymeric membranes. The use of activated carbon membranes makes it possible to separate continuously the VOCs mixture by the selective adsorption-diffusion mechanism which the condensable components are preferentially adsorbed in to the micropores of the membrane. The activated carbon hollow fiber membranes with uniform adsorptive micropores on the wall of open pores and the surface of the membranes have been fabricated by the carbonization of a thin film of phenolic resin deposited on porous alumina hollow fiber membrane. Oxidation, carbonization, and activation processing variables were controlled under different conditions in order to improve the separation characteristics of the activated carbon membrane. Properties of activated carbon hollow fiber membranes and the characterization of a gas permeation by pyrolysis conditions were studied. As the result, the activated carbon hollow fiber membranes with good separation capabilities by the molecular size mechanism as well as selective adsorption on the pores surface followed by surface diffusion effective in the recovery hydrocarbons have been obtained. Therefore, these activated carbon membranes prepared in this study are shown as promising candidate membrane for separation of VOCs.

In order to improve the selective oxidation reaction of gaseous ammonia at a low temperature, various types of metal-impregnated activated alumina were prepared, and also physical and chemical properties of the conversion of ammonia were determined. Both types of metal (Cu, Ag) impregnated activated alumina show high conversion rate of ammonia at high temperature (over $300^{\circ}C$). However, at lower temperature ($200^{\circ}C$), Ag-impregnated catalyst shows the highest conversion rate (93%). In addition, the effects of lattice oxygen of the developed catalyst was studied. Ce-impregnated catalyst showed higher conversion rate than commercial alumina, but also showed lower conversion rate than Ag-impregnated sample. Moreover, 5 vol.% of Ag activation under hydrogen shows the highest conversion rate result. Finally, through high conversion at low temperature, it was considered that the production of NO and $NO_2$, toxic by-products, were effectively inhibited.
The main focus of this study was the evaluation of arsenic concentration in the ground water of Lahore at different depth and application of different mitigation techniques for arsenic removal. Twenty four hours of solar oxidation gives 90% of arsenic removal as compared to 8 hr. or 16 hr. Among oxides, calcium oxide gives 96% of As removal as compared to 93% by lanthanum oxide. Arsenic removal efficiency was up to 97% by ferric chloride, whereas 95% by alum. Activated alumina showed 99% removal as compared to 97% and 95% removal with bauxite and charcoal, respectively. Elemental analysis of adsorbents showed that the presence of phosphate and silica can cause a reduction of arsenic removal efficiency by activated alumina, bauxite and charcoal. This study has laid a foundation for further research on arsenic in the city of Lahore and has also provided suitable techniques for arsenic removal.

In this study we investigated on the possibility of platinum and silver catalysts as de-NOx catalyst for activity test of supported metal oxide catalysts. the study was performed with the change of amount of metal and support types. The catalyst was prepared the activity of alumina supported silver catalyst produced by dry and wet impregnation method respectively and the resistance of sulfur for optimum supported silver catalyst,. As a result the activity of alumina supported platinum catalyst was showed at low temperature region but the case of silver catalyst activated at high temperature region. So we finally chose alumina supported silver catalyst as de-NOx target catalyst because alumina supported catalyst showed higher activity than alumina supported platinum catalyst.
Pd/activated carbon (Pd/AC) and Pd/alumina (Pd/AO) catalysts were prepared by the impregnation of palladium into activated carbon and alumina. The catalytic characteristics according to the kinds of support materials were compared. The decomposition efficiencies of ozone according to kinds of support materials are about the same when these were compared by adding 10 g of catalysts into the water saturated with ozone. The decomposition efficiencies and the oxidation characteristics (TOC, $COD_{Cr}$) of dichloroacetic acid were compared with the ozone only process and the catalytic ozonations using Pd/activated carbon and Pd/alumina catalysts. The decomposition efficiencies of dichloroacetic acid by catalytic ozonations were better than the one by ozone only process, but there was slight difference of the one between Pd/activated carbon and Pd/alumina catalyst. The decomposition efficiency of dichloroacetic acid was increased with increasing ozone dose at a constant concentration of dichloroacetic acid, but the one was little increased with increasing ozone dose at more than 1.0 L/min of ozone dose. It was seemed that the bicarbonate and the chloric ion formed throughout the decomposition of dichloroacetic acid acted as the scavenger of hydroxyl radical.

Low soda alumina powder was fabricated using silica (${\alpha}$-quartz) as an agent for removing soda components in the alumina. Quartz powder 2 mm in size was added to aluminum hydroxide obtained through the Bayer process, and then the mixture was heated at various temperatures. Finally, the heat-treated powders were sieved for classification. In this study, the effects of the quartz amount and heating temperature on the mechanism of removing soda were examined. A minimum soda content of 0.005 wt% was observed at the conditions of 15 wt% quartz (based on $Al(OH)_3$ amount) heat-treated at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 8 h. The soda components, such as $Na_2O$, NaOH, and $Na_2CO_3$, in alumina were ionized and activated at high temperature, and this facilitated the reaction with quartz silica and alumina producing nepheline. The advantages of using quartz include low iron content and low cost in comparison with the conventional de-soda process using chamotte, another silicate mineral.
In order to recover pure alumina from balck dross, precipiatation experiments were done to the NaOH leaching solution of mechanically activated black dross. In this work, hydrogen peroxide was added to the synthic solution as a precipitating agent. Among some variables, the concentration of $H_2O_2$ and the volume ratio of $H_2O_2$ to solution showed a remarkable effect on the precipitation of aluminum hydroxide. At the optimum conditions, most of the aluminate was precipitated. Calcination of the aluminum hydroxide at $1200^{\circ}C$ led to the formation of ${\theta}$ and ${\alpha}$-alumina. The charactistics of the synthesized activated alumina was measured by XRD and EDS. The average particles size of the alumina was $3.73{\mu}m$.
Ammonia, $NH_3$, is a key chemical widely used in chemical industries and a toxic pollutant that impacts human health. Thus, there is a need for the development of effective adsorbents with high uptake capacities to adsorb $NH_3$. An adsorbent with a high surface area and a small pore size is generally preferred in order to have a high capacity for the removal of $NH_3$. The use inorganic nanoporous materials as gas adsorbents has increased substantially and emerged as an alternative to zeolite and activated carbon. Herein, mesoporous alumina (MA) was prepared and used as an $NH_3$ adsorbent. MA showed good pore properties such as a uniform pore size and interlinked pore system, when compared to commercial adsorbents (activated carbon, zeolite, and silica powder). MA has free hydroxyl groups, serving as useful adsorption sites for $NH_3$. In an adsorption isotherm test, MA exhibited 4.7-6.5 times higher uptake capacities for $NH_3$ than commercial adsorbents. Although the larger surface areas of adsorbents are important features of ideal adsorbents, a regular and interlinked adsorbent pore system was found to be a more crucial factor to adsorb $NH_3$.
Silica membranes were prepared on a porous ${\alpha}$-alumina tube with pore size of 150nm by sol-gel and chemical vapor deposition(CVD) method for hydrogen separation at high temperatures. Silica and ${\gamma}$-lumina membranes formed by the sol-gel method possessed a large amount of mesopores of a Knudsen diffusion regime. In order to improve the $H_2$ selectivity, silica was deposited in the sol-gel derived silica/${\gamma}$-alumina layer by thermal decomposition of tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) at $600^{\circ}C$. The CVD with forced cross flow through the porous wall of the support was very effective in plugging mesopores that were left unplugged in the membranes. The CVD modified silica/alumina composite membrane completely rejected nitrogen permeation and thus showed a high $H_2$ selectivity by molecular sieve effect. the permeation of hydrogen was explained by activated diffusion and the activation energy was 9.52kJ/mol.
A method for the simultaneous analysis of 31 residual organic chloride pesticides was studied using gas chromatography. Prepared analytical samples were injected to gas chromatography (HP 5890 Series II plus) on the Ultra-2 column with ECD. The packing materials for column were changed as the following reagents ; florisil and alumina N, The residual solution was loaded to column and was elected pith erection solvents ; ether : benzene (2 : 8) solution, hexane : benzene (1 : 1) solution, dichloromethane, acetone, and methanol. The analytical results showed that 6 kinds of organic chlorides were not detected when florisil (first condition) was used as the column packing material. The nondetected 6 kinds of organic chlorides in the first analytical condition were detected and the recoveries of thrin-pesticides were increased, in particular, captan and captafol, but the recoveries of benzene hexachloride compounds were decreased when dichloromethane and methanol were added as elution solvents (pac'king material was florisil as in the first condition). The recoveries of dichlornuanid, chlorofenvinfos, folpet, and dicofol were increased and that of aldrin was increased, but those of captan and captafol were not good when alumina N was used as the packing material. To detect simultaneously thrin-pesticides, captan, and captafol, florisil and alumina N were used as the packing materials. The elution result showed that captan and captafol were not detected. This was because the column was activated insufficiently. The analytical method was the best (31 kinds of organic chlorides in the residual pesticides were detected sharply and showed high sensitivity) when the column (packing materials were florisil and alumina N: together) was fuliy activated and the impurities were removed using various elution solvents.
