  • Simulacra theory as propounded by Jean Baudrillard in his seminal treatise, "Simulacra and Simulation," explores the significance of images, media and art in contemporary culture. Its central theoretical premise is the simulacrum, a sign or symbol that plays a crucial role in constructing perceived reality but which lacks a real-world referent. In Michel Gondry creates simulacra in the form of hallucinatory dream imagery by combining stop-motion animation and live-action elements. As experimental film-making that combines analog and minimum digital technologies, the result is a tour-de-force of synchronization. This study analyzes the film's technique and expressive content and, by adopting simulacra theory as a conceptual framework, aims to provide a better understanding of Gondry's work.

  • In order to improve the efficiency and reliability of the machine, the friction should be minimized. The most widely used method to minimize friction is to maintain the fluid lubrication state. However, we can reduce friction only up to a certain limit because of viscosity. As a result of several recent studies, surface texturing has significantly reduced the friction in highly sliding machine elements, such as mechanical seals and thrust bearings. Thus far, theoretical studies have mainly focused on isothermal/iso-viscous conditions and have not taken into account the heat generation, caused by high viscous shear, and the temperature conditions on the bearing surface. In this study, we investigate the effect of dimple depth and film-temperature boundary conditions on the thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication of textured parallel slider bearings. We analyzed the continuity equation, the Navier-Stokes equation, the energy equation, and the temperature-viscosity and temperature-density relations using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT. We compare the temperature and pressure distributions at various dimple depths. The increase in oil temperature caused by viscous shear was higher in the dimple than in the bearing outlet because of the action of the strong vortex generated in the dimple. The lubrication characteristics significantly change with variations in the dimple depths and film-temperature boundary conditions. We can use the current results as basic data for optimum surface texturing; however, further studies are required for various temperature boundary conditions.

  • This paper has the aim to track down the viewers' cognitive emotion of how they are interacting with the story of Shakespeare in Love. Human minds have cognitive and emotional flows while plots, characters, and action-ideas are intertwined in the story of the film. This paper especially focused on the analysis of characters' networks with four statistical data pictures in order to schematize the storytelling architecture on how and why Shakespeare has strongly motivated to write a great star-crossed love play, Romeo and Juliet in his very young age. This paper examines that Shakespeare's subject of desire is to accomplish both a true love and a sincere play which can make the nature of love true. The desire of subject is always slipped aside into scattering with "object a." In the film of Shakespeare in Love, the "object a" is a writing process and has a product of Romeo and Juliet as well.

  • This essay interprets envy not as a form of conventional conflict between women but as a type of common response of self-preservation focused on envy represented in the American film, Single White Female, and the Korean film, Female Teacher. Although envy is traditionally classified as a feminine emotion, it is an innate human emotion regardless of gender identity. Especially in the competitive era of neo-liberalism, we recognize only its negative side while overlooking its positive side as envy originates from comparison with others. Hedy's mimicking of Allie in Single White Female is not the same as idealized identification because her envy is aggressive and a self-assertive response while transforming Allie's identity. Likewise, envy of a protagonist in Female Teacher triggers an action of self-preservation against irrational social and personal inequality. Accordingly, a type of resistant and critical power resides in envy between women in these films. Therefore, proper recognition of repressed envy is required in order to prevent its transition towards a violent outcome.

  • With the continuous development of the Internet and digital, platforms are emerging to store large amounts of media data and provide customized services to individuals through online. Companies that provide these services recommend movies that suit their personal tastes to promote media consumption. Each company is doing a lot of research on various algorithms to recommend media that users prefer. Movies are divided into genres such as action, melodrama, horror, and drama, and the film's audio (music, sound effect, voice) is an important production element that makes up the film. In this research, based on movie trailers, we extract audio for each genre, check the commonalities of audio for each genre, distinguish movie genres through supervised learning of artificial intelligence, and propose a utilization method for generating metadata in the future.

  • This paper examines a social and cultural history of horror films through the keyword "technology", focusing on The Spark of Fear: Technology, Society and the Horror Film (2015) written by Brian N. Duchaney. Science fiction film is closely connected with technology in film genres. On the other hand, horror films have been explained in terms of nature/supernatural. In this regard, The Spark of Fear, which accounts for horror film history as (re)actions to the development of technology, is remarkable. Early horror films which were produced under the influence of gothic novels reflected the fear of technology that had been caused by industrial capitalism. For example, in the film Frankenstein (1931), an angry crowd of people lynch the "monster", the creature of technology. This is the action which is aroused by the fear of technology. Furthermore, this mob behavior is suggestive of an uprising of people who have been alienated by industrial capitalism during the Great Depression. In science fiction horror films, which appeared in the post-war boom, the "other" that manifests as aliens is the entity that destroys the value of prosperity during post-war America. While this prosperity is closely related to the life of the middle class in accordance with the suburbanization, the people live conformist lives under the mantle of technologies such as the TV, refrigerator, etc. In the age of the Vietnam War, horror films demonize children, the counter-culture generation against a backdrop of the house that is the place of isolation and confinement. In this place, horror arises from the absolute absence of technology. While media such as videos, internet, and smartphones have reinforced interconnectedness with the outside world since the 1980s, it became another outside influence that we cannot control. "Found-footage" and "torture porn" which were rife in post-9/11 horror films show that the technologies of voyeurism/surveillance and exposure/exhibitionism are near to saturation. In this way, The Spark of Fear provides an opportune insight into the present day in which the expectation and fear of the progress of technology are increasingly becoming inseparable from our daily lives.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of expressionism in the space of deconstructive architecture by comparing the spaces of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" video with the expressionist characteristics of film narrative structure and expressionist architecture and making an expansion based on the results. The findings were as follows: first, the "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" is divided into two set spaces: one has the perspective representation distorted in the viewpoint of a mad person applied to it, and the other reflects the viewpoint of a normal person from medieval paintings with no perspective. Second, the expressionist buildings did not reflect the expressionist characteristics in the interior spaces as fully as in the exterior ones. Third, the incomplete combination of Signifiant and $Signifi{\acute{e}}$, which were the theoretical basis of deconstructive architecture, showed a tendency of binary opposition like the double narrative structure of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." Fourth, deconstructive architecture seems to embody the exterior form and interior space of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and its set spaces in the phenomenal aspect but exhibits its limitations with the realization of dynamics, one of the characteristics of expressionism. Finally, the Seattle Public Library presents the best embodiment of expressionist characteristics found in the set spaces of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" while seeking after the combination of horizontal and vertical paths of action through the spiral ramps and inclined slabs.

  • This experiment was carried out to conform the antseptic effect of Astradix-P, as a yeaststatic substance on the growth of film forming yeasts, which were isolated from denatured home prepared Korean soy sauce. It resulted that Astradix-P did not give any antiseptic effect, if these yeasts were inoculated into soy sauce medium, but in the ordinary medium the yeast growth were strongly inhibited. Consquently the possiblities of the practical application of the Astradix-P into the home-preserving soy sauce was primarily remained in doubt at this moment. This result might be caused from the reason that the basic amino acids, originally existed in soy sauce, eg, arginine, histidine and lysine etc., had anticipated with the antagonistic action and thereby they made the Astradix-P inactive to these yeast, which already they have been recognized in the previous works.

  • A snapping-beam microswitch has been designed, fabricated and tested. From a design analysis, necessary and sufficient conditions for a snap-through switching fouction have been derived for a clamped shallow beam. The necessary condition has resulted in a geometric relation, in which the ratio of beam thickness to initial beam deflection plays a key role in the snapping ability. The sufficient condition for the snapping action has been obtained as a function of the inertia force due to applied acceleration, and the electrostatic force, adjustable by an inter-electrode voltage. For experimental investigations, a set of microbeams of silicon dioxide/$P^+$silicon bimorphs have been fabricated. Geometric size and mechanical behavior of each material film have been measured from on-chip test structures. Estimated and measured characteristics of the fabricated devices are compared.
