Senior Center Based Diabetes Self-management Program: An Action Research Approach (노인복지관 당뇨병 자기관리 프로그램의 과정과 평가: 실행연구방법)

  • The purpose of this study examined the feasibility and efficacy of a senior center-based diabetes self-management program applying action research approach. The cyclical action research method was applied for this study: plan, act, evaluate, and reflect in delivering three waves of the intervention program. Three waves of a 12 weeks-length small group diabetes self-management program were offered during the period of 15 months in a senior center in Seoul. Planning of $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ wave program were based on reflection of $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ program evaluation respectively. Among the 46 participants, 93.48% (N=43) completed the program. The quantitative evaluation showed statistically significant improvement in HbA1C(p<.001), fasting plasma glucose(p<.001), BMI(p=.016), waist circumference(p=.001), systolic blood pressure(p=.036), diabetes self-management behavior(p<.001) and health knowledge(p=.008). Qualitative data revealed that individual management was very helpful in empowering and adhering for own diabetes care for the participants. Participants reported high satisfaction towards the program with mean satisfaction score of 65.12. Application of the Diabetes Self-management program with action study strategy was successful in community setting for improving participants' subjective and objective outcomes. Action research method guides the practitioner to tailor the program to respond for the participants and field needs.

A Miniature Humanoid Robot That Can Play Soccor

  • An intelligent miniature humanoid robot system is designed and implemented as a platform for researching walking algorithm. The robot system consists of a mechanical robot body, a control system, a sensor system, and a human interface system. The robot has 6 dofs per leg, 3 dofs per arm, and 2 dofs for a neck, so it has total of 20 dofs to have dexterous motion capability. For the control system, a supervisory controller runs on a remote host computer to plan high level robot actions based on the vision sensor data, a main controller implemented with a DSP chip generates walking trajectories for the robot to perform the commanded action, and an auxiliary controller implemented with an FPGA chip controls 20 actuators. The robot has three types of sensors. A two-axis acceleration sensor and eight force sensing resistors for acquiring information on walking status of the robot, and a color CCD camera for acquiring information on the surroundings. As an example of an intelligent robot action, some experiments on playing soccer are performed.

A Domain Action Classification Model Using Conditional Random Fields (Conditional Random Fields를 이용한 영역 행위 분류 모델)

  • In a goal-oriented dialogue, speakers' intentions can be represented by domain actions that consist of pairs of a speech act and a concept sequence. Therefore, if we plan to implement an intelligent dialogue system, it is very important to correctly infer the domain actions from surface utterances. In this paper, we propose a statistical model to determine speech acts and concept sequences using conditional random fields at the same time. To avoid biased learning problems, the proposed model uses low-level linguistic features such as lexicals and parts-of-speech. Then, it filters out uninformative features using the chi-square statistic. In the experiments in a schedule arrangement domain, the proposed system showed good performances (the precision of 93.0% on speech act classification and the precision of 90.2% on concept sequence classification).

  • This paper is introduced about Design driven testing, for real time system, based on use case approaches, We focuses on a part of an extended use case approach for real time software development, which partitions design schema into layered design component architecture of functional components called "design component", We developed a use case action matrix to contain a collection of related scenarios each describing a specific variant of an executable sequence of use case action units, which reflected the behavioral properties of the real time system design, in this paper, we attempt to apply real time system with design driven testing with test plan metrics which is introduced which produces an ordering of this scenario set to enhance productivity and both promote and capitalize on test case reusability of existing scenarios.scenarios.

  • A liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrrini (OV), is the major cause of the high incidence of cholangiocarcinoma in North-eastern Thailand. The prevalence of OV infection remains high in various parts of the country, especially in wetland rural areas where a large proportion of the community work in agriculture and continue the traditional practice of eating raw or uncooked cyprinoid fish products. The national control program seems to have had little impact in many of these areas, and it has been difficult to make precise assessments of the overall effectiveness of the program. Therefore there is a need for a community-based approach to prevent infection with the parasite, ideally involving as many players as possible. Here we document an attempt to assess the best means to prevention on the basis of a community intervention in three villages in north-east Thailand, with participation of representatives of Health Promotion Hospitals of the Ministry of Public Health with dedicated staff, but also school teachers, independent government sponsored village health volunteers, and housewives responsible for cooking and diet selection. An action plan was followed, allowing detailed discussions of practical proposals, their introduction and then repeated reflection and further proposals at the individual village level.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the status of environment-related teaching in elementary and secondary schools. A questionnaire survey was conducted for the study. Items in the questionnaire were developed based on the theory of environmental education and integrated education. The questionnaire was responded to 501 elementary school teachers, 273 middle school teachers, and 210 high school teachers in the city of Seoul and Kyunggi Province. The survey analysis revealed that elementary and secondary school teachers recognized 'environmental action skills' as the most important objective for school environmental education. Contrary to the teachers' expectations, it was found that there is insufficient teaching and learning materials for teaching in the domain of 'environmental action skills' and they could not confidently teach the skills in environment-related classes. For professional development of teachers in integrated environmental education, pre- and in-service programs will be developed systematically in a workshop to give teachers an opportunity to analyze teaching materials, design instruction plan, perform class trial, and evaluate the class situation for feedback. The results of this study can serve as a basic reference for improvement of environment-related subject education.

  • This study preformed a research about the traffic signal light that is adding supplementary green light to prevent driver's cognitive errors and plan safe driving through improving visual cognitivity of present traffic signal light. The result of comparing the present traffic signal light(three colors, four colors) with the traffic signal light(three colors, four colors) adding supplementary green light through car simulator has a significant difference. This result shows possibility that the traffic signal light adding supplementary green light can contribute in safety driving at a point that the traffic signal light advances a point of braking time when drivers didn't recognize by themselves. The findings in this study ca say that there is the meaning in showing a actual application possibility of this study finding by investigating a action of subjective response the moment compare driver's actual response.

Children and Adolescents' Assessments of Child Friendly Cities (아동 친화적인 도시에 대한 아동.청소년의 인식)

  • Child Friendly Cities (CFC) is a framework for action with the aim of implementing the UN CRC led by local government in an urban context. A number of surveys with 755 children and adolescents were conducted in order to assess the community's child-friendliness level of Seoul. The results of this study were as follows : 1) Comprehensive assessment of the city's child-friendliness was overall seen to be negative. 2) In regards to the city's child-friendliness, the assessments of Children were more positive than those of the adolescents. 3) Boys assessed the city's child-friendliness more positively than girls. 4) The children and adolescents living in more wealthy communities assessed the city's child-friendliness more positively than those living in poorer areas. This study suggested that a local action plan for the Child Friendly Cities must be implemented to fulfill the CFC standards.

  • Generating an action plan and obtaining commitment to achieve it is desired in organizations, but not always achieved. Whatever the reason, there is a room for an improved approach to decision making, so that people can arrive at a common understanding of a problem and commitment to action. Those are the purposes of a Decision Conferencing(DC). A DC, one example of single workstation-based GDSSs, is a two-day session attended by a group of people who attempt to resolve important issues of concern to their organization with the help of group facilitation techniques and decision analytic computer modelling. The interchange of differing perspectives on the issues is encouraged by the facilitator who attends to group processes but does not contribute to the content of discussions. Decision analysis provides a variety of structures for modelling the differing perspectives. Information and value judgements are incorporated in these models, whose results usually reveal new, higher-level perspectives on the issues. Information technology is needed to combine the part of the model and to facilitate on-the-spot replay of results. The experimental case study in this paper shows that how a DC can help a Korea's trading company to develop new, corporate level resource allocation strategies which are based on improved consensus among competing participants.

Developing a Home-based Self-management Support Intervention for Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (만성폐쇄성폐질환 환자의 호흡재활을 위한 재가 자가관리 증진 중재 개발)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a home-based self-management support intervention (SMSI) for enhancing pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Korea. Methods: This methodological study was conducted by following these 4 steps: constructing the preliminary draft of a home-based SMSI from existing recommendation and a literature review on PR and self-management interventions; testing content validity with 6 experts in COPD; exploring clinical applicability of the intervention by applying it to 4 COPD patients; determining the final intervention. Results: The final intervention included 4 components and contents identified from the literature review as essentials for self-management of COPD patients: education; exercise training and practice including breathing, muscle strengthening and aerobic exercises; cognitive behavioral strategies including informative self-decision making, collaborative goal setting and supportive advice; and action planning for exacerbation. The intervention was designed to be run by a trained nurse and had 8 weekly sessions consisting of three 60-minute face-to-face sessions and five 20-minute phone-call sessions. Conclusion: The intervention developed in this study incorporates essential components of self-management, i.e. action plan and cognitive behavioral strategies, and will contribute to enhancing and maintaining effects of PR by increasing self-management in COPD patients.
