The effect of multiple process parameters on a set of continuous response variables is, especially in experimental designs, difficult and intricate to determine. Due to the complexity in aeroacoustic and vibroacoustic studies, the often-performed simple one-factor-at-a-time method turns out to be the least effective approach. In contrast, the statistical Design of Experiments is a technique used with the objective to maximize the obtained information while keeping the experimental effort at a minimum. The presented work aims at giving insights on Design of Experiments applied to aeroacoustic and vibroacoustic problems while comparing different experimental designs and approximation models. For this purpose, an experimental rig of a ducted low-pressure fan is developed that allows gathering data of both, aerodynamic and aeroacoustic nature while analysing three independent process parameters. The experimental designs used to sample the design space are a Central Composite design and a Box-Behnken design, both used to model a response surface regression, and Latin Hypercube sampling to model an Artificial Neural network. The results indicate that Latin Hypercube sampling extracts information that is more diverse and, in combination with an Artificial Neural network, outperforms the quadratic response surface regressions. It is shown that the Latin Hypercube sampling, initially developed for computer-aided experiments, can also be used as an experimental design. To further increase the benefit of the presented approach, spectral information of every experimental test point is extracted and Artificial Neural networks are chosen for modelling the spectral information since they show to be the most universal approximators.
The Therme Vals is a hotel and spa which combines a complete sensory experience designed by Peter Zumthor. This study aims to find emotional design approaches of the Therme Vals through references, observation from site visit, interview and discussion related to this topic. This space was designed for visitors to luxuriate and rediscover the ancient benefits of bathing. The combinations of light and shade, open and enclosed spaces and linear elements make for a highly sensuous and restorative experience. The study observed the emotional design characteristics of the Therme Vals through space approach, aesthetic and experiential sides. For space approach side, emotional experience in gradual process to approach the space was mentioned, for aesthetic side, mystical combination of light, stone and water was observed, for experiential side, 5 senses experience and space programing for adjusting the density of the space were observed. This study found that the spa has the quality of spiritual, soul-touching delight like religious experience. The fascination for the mystic qualities of a world of stone within the mountain, for darkness and light, for light reflections on the water or in the steam saturated air, pleasure in the unique acoustics of the bubbling water in a world of stone, the ritual of bathing-all these notions were explained in Peter Zumthor's construction details. In the result of the interview and discussion, people love the space and praised it highly for the emotional design regardless of space experience, age, sex or ethnicity. Emotional design approaches based on human nature, materiality, and memory of the places is more powerful than other emotional design ideas with technical devices, special themes, digital effects, vivid colors and shapes.
Hydroacoustic technique was used to analyze spatiotemporal stability and distribution of demersal fish aggregations in the coastal region to overcome some limitations of the existing methods such as net and diving. The survey was carried out in the Baekeum Bay on the south coast of Korea in January 2007. The bottom depth in the study site ranges from 7 to 25 m. In order to outline aggregations of demersal fish initial scanning using 200 kHz split-beam transducer was randomly conducted over the large area. Having detected fish aggregation in the specific region, intensive acoustic survey of irregular star pattern was carried out along 14 transects across the area in question. The results of the acoustic survey show that all demersal fish aggregations are concentrated about 5 m from sea bottom having a slight slope and remain steady with no spatial or temporal variations during acoustic survey. The hydroacoustic method used in this study offers a new approach to understand vertical and horizontal distribution, spatiotemporal stability, and biomass estimate of demersal fish aggregations in coastal regions. Additionally, the number of individual fish estimated from in situ acoustic target strength data can be used to understand the standing stock of demersal fish aggregation.
The hydro-acoustic method is widely used for estimating biomass and distribution of fisheries resources along the coast and in the ocean. High costs and time are necessary to construct systems for this method and to initially educate specialists. It has been used in fisheries of advanced nations like Japan and Norway, because it is more efficient than other methods. In order to research the behavior of fish around an artificial reef using an echo sounder, volume backscattering strength (SV) and fish per cubic meter (FPCM) of darkbanded rockfish around the model artificial reef in a water tank were measured. Moreover, behavior of fish was observed in an adjacent artificial reef, which was constructed at Tongyeong marine ranching area. Following that, an acoustics survey was conducted at Mirukdo around the Tongyeong marine ranching area, in order to understand the spatial distribution and strength of fisheries resources. Very high patches of fish were found in a wide area around the artificial reef. It is thought that an approaching fish school around the artificial reef can be measured accurately by using an echo sounder of high resolution. Moreover, use of other monitoring methods like of diving or ROV simultaneous with an echo sounder is required in order to grasp the species and ecology of fish inhabiting the area around the artificial reef.

Vocalizations of the common dolphin Delphinus Delphis, were recorded from a single hydrophone while coastal visual survey was performed in the East Sea in March 2017. Like most Delphinidae, common dolphins produce whistles, echolocation clicks, and burst-pulsed calls, with repertoires that differ between species and geographically separated populations. This study focuses on using frequency analysis to classify sounds into three categories and to compare them with those of other common dolphin populations. The fundamental frequencies of the whistles were high in the 6 to 14 kHz range, while echolocation clicks were in the 40 to 90 kHz frequency band. These results are similar to high-energy distributions in the same frequency band in other regions. Based on this study of the acoustic characteristics of dolphins off the east coast of Korea, cetacean vocalizations can be classified using a database of cetacean sounds in Korea. In addition, this technique could improve data quality for visual whale surveys and could be applied to various other research subjects.

This study was carried out to examine characteristics of various acoustic indicators evaluating speech intelligibility such as reverberation time(T30), D50, C50 and speech transmission index(STI) in Korean elementary school classrooms. Results showed that mean T30 at middle frequencies(500 Hz to 2000 Hz) measured in 9 classrooms was about 0.75 s, which exceeds a regulation specified on American National Standards(ANSI); 0.60 s. Mean D50, C50 and STI were 60 % to 66 %, +2 dB to +3 dB, and 0.65, respectively. The maximum difference in D50 and C50 according to different receiver points in a classroom was 13 % and 2.5 dB, while the maximum difference in T30 was 0.03 s. Whereas STI measured in classrooms has relatively low correlation with other indicators, correlation between D50 and C50 was high, R2=.9964. In addition, T30 and C50 were fitted well as logarithmic regression curve with R2=.9610. It was +3.73 dB in C50 and 68 % in D50 which are the value corresponding to 0.60 s in T30 on this curve.

A coupled room system consists of adjacent rooms and apertures where the sound energy is exchanged between the two rooms. Acoustically, a coupled room system shows a non-exponential decay profile. Most of the related researches have been to analyze the acoustic properties of two-room coupled system so far whereas three-room coupled system were seldom studied. In this regard, this paper aims to analyse the distribution of sound pressure level, sound decay curve of three-room coupled system and sound energy flow between them by using the acoustic diffusion model and to further verify them through experiments. Firstly, the sound pressure level distribution and mean sound pressure level in the steady-state condition are analyzed at various frequencies and source locations. Good agreements are observed in both experiments and analysis results. Secondly, two double slope effect quantifiers of sound attenuation, LDT/EDT and LDT/T10 are compared at various frequencies and for different source locations. The result indicates that LDT/T10, less affected by the early reflection patterns than LDT/EDT, is more suitable to the analysis and experiments of a multi-slope sound decay curve. Lastly, the sound energy flow in each room is analyzed based on the acoustic diffusion model. After the early decay stage, the sound energy is observed to flow from the room with a long reverberation time to the room with a short one.
In this study, in order to investigate whether or not the emergency broadcasting sound generated from an emergency broadcasting speaker is clearly transmitted to the occupant through architectural sound simulation, when the loudspeaker for emergency broadcasting is installed at intervals of 25 m according to NFSC 202 for a rectangular hallway. The sound pressure level and speech intelligibility index were analyzed according to changes in building finishing materials. With a reflective material finishing, sound pressure level satisfied the standard while speech intelligibility index was low. As a result of applying the sound absorbing material finishing, clarity and speech transmission index was improved to a level that could be understood by the occupant, whereas the sound pressure level delivered to the occupant decreased in the same space.

In this work, Altair Engineering's vibroacoustic modeling approach is used to simulate the acoustic signature of a simplified automobile in a wind tunnel. The modeling approach relies on a two step procedure involving simulation and extraction of acoustic sources using a high fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation followed by propagation of the acoustic energy within the structure and passenger compartment using a structural dynamics solver. The tools necessary to complete this process are contained within Altair's HyperWorks CAE software suite. The CFD simulations are performed using AcuSolve and the structural simulations are performed using OptiStruct. This vibroacoustics simulation methodology relies on calculation of the acoustic sources from the flow solution computed by AcuSolve. The sources are based on Lighthill's analogy and are sampled directly on the acoustic mesh. Once the acoustic sources have been computed, they are transformed into the frequency domain using a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) with advanced sampling and are subsequently used in the structural acoustics model. Although this approach does require the CFD solver to have knowledge of the acoustic simulation domain a priori, it avoids modeling errors introduced by evaluation of the acoustic source terms using dissimilar meshes and numerical methods. The aforementioned modeling approach is demonstrated on the Hyundai Simplified Model (HSM) geometry in this work. This geometry contains flow features that are representative of the dominant noise sources in a typical automobile design; namely vortex shedding from the passenger compartment A-pillar and bluff body shedding from the side view mirrors. The geometry also contains a thick poroelastic material on the interior that acts to reduce the acoustic noise. This material is modeled using a Biot material formulation during the structural acoustic simulation. Successful prediction of the acoustic noise within the HSM geometry serves to validate the vibroacoustic modeling approach for automotive applications.

This study was performed to construct sound performance DB of royal palace buildings and to examine the special quality more scientifically. Research target of royal palace were Changdeokgung and Gyeongbokgung. Sound insulation performance between the adjacent room and facade, room acoustics of Pyeonjeon and Chimjeon which is representative building in royal palace were examined through field measurement. Measured values of RT($T_{mf}$) at Pyeonjeon were 0.78 sec. and 1.03 sec. in Seonjeongjoen and Sajeongjoen, respectively. The RTs of both Pyeonjeon buildings were estimated suitable for speech and lecture considering their volume. The RT($T_{mf}$)s at Chimjeon were measured in range of 0.29~0.55 sec. This meant that the acoustic energy in rooms was decreased by sound transmission through mulberry paper(Hanji) of traditional windows and doors. As a sound insulation performance, the single-number quantities($D_{ls,2m,nT,w}$) of the building facades in Pyeonjeon and Chimjeon were measured 4~20 dB. Also the single-number quantities($D_{p,w}$) between the adjacent rooms in Chimjeon were measured 3~18 dB. Sound insulation performance of traditional building elements such as window and door depended strongly on their layers and area.
