  • Black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) produce alarm calls apparently related to their anti-predator behaviors, but the hypothesis that the calls are actually used as functionally referential alarm signals has not yet been tested. In this study, we performed a series of experiments using visual (a stuffed goshawk: Accipiter gentilis) and acoustic (alarm calls and a control vocalization) stimuli at 15 sites in Sinjindo-ri and Dowhang-ri, Taean-gun, Chungnam province to examine anti-predator responses of the gulls to alarm calls in playback trials. We found that the gulls' visual recognition of a perched hawk model in the absence of alarm vocalizations was weak or absent because the model was noticed in only two out of 16 trials. The gulls' responses to playbacks of the alarm call only and the alarm call with a visual stimulus differed from responses to the control vocalization in latency to approach, time mobbing, and the percentage of gulls responding, while the responses to alarm call only differed from alarm call with a visual stimulus in latency to first fly, latency to call, and time mobbing. The results of this study suggest that alarm calls of black-tailed gulls are used to elicit appropriate anti-predator behaviors that are intensified when a predator is detected visually.

  • The role of the window length of time-frequency transformation is important for the audio data hiding methods utilizing phase information. In this paper, the experiments for our audio data hiding method were conducted in order to evaluate the audio quality and robustness against reverberant environment. The experimental results showed the tendency that the worse audio quality but better robustness were obtained when the lengthy window was applied. The important reason for quality degradation was pre-echo which flatters the percussive sound. The results also indicated that the wireless communication theory related to the length of time-frequency transform can be applied in the field of audio data hiding and acoustic data transmission.

  • This paper deals with an electronic ballast for hish intensity short-arc discharge lamps, which consists of a boost converter, a step down converter operated as a current source with power regulation and a low frequency inverter with external ignition circuit The ignition circuit generates high voltage pulses of 130[Hz] up to 5 [kV]. A reignition circuit is equipped in the ballast, and it operates the lamp at a regular interval for protection when an ignition fails. Acoustic resonance phenomenon was eliminated by operating a low frequency square wave voltage and current. The measured lamp voltage, current and consumption power were 123.8 [V], 8.1 [A] and 1,002 [W], respectively. From the experiment, we confirmed that the prototype ballast operates the lamp with a constant power.

  • Sounds based machine fault diagnosis recovers all the studies that aim to detect automatically abnormal sound on machines using the acoustic emission by these machines. Conventional methods that use mathematical models have been found inaccurate because of the complexity of the industry machinery systems and the obvious existence of nonlinear factors such as noises. Therefore, any fault diagnosis issue can be treated as a pattern recognition problem. We propose here an automatic fault diagnosis method of hand drills using discrete wavelet transform(DWT) and pattern recognition techniques such as artificial neural networks(ANN). We first conduct a filtering analysis based on DWT. The power spectral density(PSD) is performed on the wavelet subband except for the highest and lowest low frequency subband. The PSD of the wavelet coefficients are extracted as our features for classifier based on ANN the pattern recognition part. The results show that the proposed method can be effectively used not only to detect defects but also to various automatic diagnosis system based on sound.

  • This paper presents a digital controller of the electronic ballast using high frequency modulation method for the metal halide lamp. The proposed controller includes the control algorithm for soft starting, no load protection, over current protection and power control. The proposed digital controller, moreover, has the high frequency modulation scheme and the tracking algorithm to avoid acoustic resonance phenomena. For the math production with the low cost using the ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuit), the proposed digital controller has been designed with the FPGAs(Field Programmable Gate array) only, without any microprocessor. In this paper, the detail digital control algorithms are described and the experimental results of prototype 150w metal halide electronic ballast are presented.

  • In the area of digital signal processing, it is necessary to improve the quality of the speech signal after removing the background noise which exists in a various real environments. The important thing to consider when removing the background noise acoustically is that to solve the problem, depending on the information of the human auditory mechanism is mainly the amplitude spectrum of the speech signal. This paper introduces the characteristics of a frequency-weighted spectrum shaping filter for the extraction of the amplitude spectrum of the speech signal with the primary purpose. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm using the methods of a Wiener filter and the frequency-weighted spectrum shaping filter according to the acoustic model, after extracted the amplitude spectral information in the noisy speech signal. The spectral distortion (SD) output of the proposed algorithm is experimentally improved more than 5.28 dB compared to a conventional method.

  • In this paper, an adaptive scheme for network topology configuration is proposed to save the overall energy consumption in underwater acoustic sensor network. The proposed scheme employs a self-organized networking methodology where network topology is locally optimized by exchanging the energy-related information between neighboring nodes such as the remaining energy of each node, in a way that the network life time can be augmented without any centralized control function. Computer simulation is used to evaluate the proposed scheme comparing with LEACH in terms of the number of alive nodes after a given time, the deviation of individual nodes' residual energy and the energy consumption at the initialization and coordination stages.

  • Touch-enabled technology is increasingly being accepted as a main communication interface between human and computers. However, conventional touchscreen technologies, such as resistive overlay, capacitive overlay, and SAW(Surface Acoustic Wave), are not cost-effective for large screens. As an alternative to the conventional methods, we introduce a newly emerging method, an optical imaging touchscreen which is much simpler and more cost-effective. Despite its attractive benefits, optical imaging touchscreen has to overcome some problems, such as heavy computational complexity, intermittent ghost points, and over-sensitivity, to be commercially used. Therefore, we designed a hardware controller for signal processing and multi-coordinate computation, and proposed Infrared-blocked DA(Dark Area) manipulation as a solution. While the entire optical touch control took 34ms with a 32-bit microprocessor, the designed hardware controller can manage 2 valid coordinates at 200fps and also reduce energy consumption of infrared diodes from 1.8Wh to 0.0072Wh.

  • The SAW device is extensively used as a electro$.$mechanical bandpass filter in which a twopairs of interdigital transducers are provided over the surface of the piezoelectric substrate. For the design requirement, the central frequency and the bandwidth of the passband, and the attenuation level of the stopband region are specified. The configuration is made so as to satisfy the specification given. The central frequency is mainly determined by the distance between the pair of the finger electrodes. The design is considered as an optimization problem with which the error norm, the distance between the desired characteristics and the calculated for a given model is to be minimized. The delta function model and the electrical equivalent circuit model are utilized to represent the SAW filter characteristics. Genetic algorithm is used for optimization in which apodization of the transducer fingers is chosen as a design variable.

  • The diversity techniques can benefit underwater acoustic communications when the distance between sensors is sufficiently apart, and this leads to the increases in the physical size of the communication system: thus it is very hard to practically use such systems in real-environments. Therefore, in this paper, we have collected data from real underwater cannel environments in order to analyze the usability of diversity combined with beamforming techniques. And we have estimated the fading characteristics from the measurement data, and analyzed the correlation coefficients using the estimated fading characteristics. After analyzing the estimated fading characteristics from the measurements data, we found out that by applying diversity techniques on the output signals from beamformers that perform beamforming from different multipath directions, we can reduce the distance between sensors and at the same time benefit from the diversity gain.
