This paper suggests that the onset-coda asymmetry found in languages like Korean and others should be dealt with in terms of one acoustic feature rather than other articulatory features, claiming that the acoustic feature involved here is [noise], i.e., 'aperiodic waveform energy'. It determines the structural well-formedness of the languages in question whether a coda ends in [noise] or not, regardless of the intensity, the frequency, and the time duration of the [noise]. Fricatives, affricates, aspirated stops, tense stops, and released stops are all disallowed in the coda position due to the acoustic feature [noise] they, commonly end with if they were, posited in the coda. The proposal implies that the three seemingly separate prohibitions of consonants in the coda position -- i) no fricatives/affricates, ii) no aspirated/tense stops, and iii) no released stops -- are directly correlated with each other. Incorporation of the one acoustic feature [noise] in the feature theory enables us to see that the aspects of onset-coda asymmetry are derived from one single source: ban, of [noise] in the coda.

Recently, many membrane structure buildings are constructed with the trend of multi functional and high technological construction. The membrane structure has the characteristics such as distinguished architectural shape which can make variable space creation and can make economic use of material. Therefore, it is in the spotlight of sport complex, various concert hall, and public service buildings. However, the acoustic study of membrane structure has not been following up the increasing demand for the membrane structure. In this study, the acoustic characteristics of membrane structure will be studied and analyzed using architectural acoustic factors based on acoustic design theory And also, the differences between theoretical exhortation value and outcome of study will be studied with the basis of architectural acoustic material study.
Proposed is an aero-acoustic performance prediction method of axial fan. The fan aerodynamic performance is predicted by combining pitch-averaged quasi 3-D flow analysis with pressure loss models for blade boundary layer and wake, secondary flow, endwall boundary layer and tip leakage flows. Fan noise is assumed to be radiated as dipole distribution type, and its generation is assumed to be mainly due to the vortex street shed from blade trailing edge. The fluctuating pressure and lift on the blade surface are analyzed by incorporating the wake vortex stree shed from blade trailing edge. The fluctuating pressure and lift on the blade surface are analyzed by incorporating the wake vortex street model with thin airfoil theory. The aero-acoustic performance prediction results by the present method are in good agreement with the measured results of several axial fans. With the present prediction method, parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effects of blade chord length and spacing on the efficiency and the noise level of fan. In the case of lightly loaded fan, both efficiency improvement and noise reduction can be achieved by decreasing chord length or by increasing blade specing. However, when fan is designed at highly loaded condition, the noise reduction by increasing blade spacing penalizes the attaninable efficiency of fan.

This paper presents numerical and theoretical studies of acoustic wave interactions in slightly compressible liquids within piezoelectrically driven inkjet print heads. The interconnected flow channels may cause jet crosstalk, resulting in poor printing quality. It should be reduced by modifying the channel structure with the acoustic wave interactions considered. Compressible gas flow driven by the sudden movement of a top wall in the channel is calculated using Flow3D and is validated with the narrow gap theory. Limited compressibility model of the Flow3D is employed to calculate pressure waves of slightly compressible ink flow. It is found that reducing restrictor width can damp out the jet crosstalk by inhibiting the pressure wave propagation. The degree of crosstalk has been quantified using the maximum values of cross-correlations between neighboring channels and a critical channel dimension for acceptable crosstalk has been proposed. This finding is verified by drop visualization experiments using silicon-micromachined piezo inkjet print heads that are fabricated by our group.
A heuristic physical theory of diffraction (PTD) for an acoustic impedance wedge is proposed. This method is based on Ufimtsev's three-dimensional PTD, which is derived for an acoustic soft or hard wedge. We modify the original PTD according to the process of physical optics (or the Kirchhoff approximation) to obtain a 3D heuristic diffraction model for an impedance wedge. In principle, our result is equivalent to Luebbers' model presented in electromagnetism. Moreover, our approach provides a useful insight into the theoretical basis of the existing heuristic diffraction methods. The derived heuristic PTD is applied to an arbitrary impedance polygon, and a simple PTD formula is derived as a supplement to the physical optics formula.
Planar array of acoustic transducer is normally used in a sonar system. Acoustic radiation makes beam pattern in underwater uses. The main source of the beam pattern is due to the transducer array. Therefore, estimation of the acoustic radiated power is necessary to predict the performance and efficiency of the transducer. As an example of the acoustic radiation power, nine acoustic transducers mounted to a rigid infinite baffle are considered in a theoretical model. Each piston's acoustic radiation consists of self- and mutual-radiation impedances. Total radiation impedances and acoustic radiation power of the transducers are extracted using on the theory of an equivalent electric circuit. The theoretical results reveal that acoustic radiation power of the transducer depends on the mutual coupling effects.

Application of combustion stabilization devices such as baffle and acoustic cavity to liquid propellant rocket engine is investigated to suppress high-frequency combustion instability, i.e., acoustic instability. First, these damping devices are designed based on linear damping theory. As a principal design parameter, damping factor is considered and calculated numerically in the chambers with various specifications of these devices. Next, the unbaffled chambers with/without acoustic cavities are tested experimentally for several operating conditions. The unbaffled chamber shows the specific stability characteristics depending on the operating condition and has small dynamic stability margin. The most hazardous frequency is clearly identified through Fast Fourier Transform. As a result, the acoustic cavity with the present design has little stabilization effect in this specific chamber. Finally, stability rating tests are conducted with the baffled chamber, where evident combustion stabilization is observed, which indicates sufficient damping effect. Thrust loss caused by baffle installation is about $2{\%}$.

We present a novel fault diagnosis methodology using acoustic sensor systems and neural independent component analysis for large-scaled power machines. Acoustic sensors are carried out to measure sounds generated from power machines whose signal is used to determine whether fault is occurred or not. Acoustic measurements are independently mixed and deteriorated from original source signals. We propose a demixing algorithm against such mixed signals by means of independent component analysis which is achieved based on information theory and higher-order statistics to derive learning mechanism.
4-Pole parameter method based on an acoustic theory is very popular for the analysis of the acoustic behavior of the car exhaust system. However, this method is applicable only for the simple shape of acoustic elements of the muffler. Numerical methods such as FEM(Finite Element Method) or BEM(Boundary Element Method) can also provide acceptable results for the acoustic analysis of the car exhaust system. Even though these numerical methods have benefits for the analysis of complicated shape of acoustic elements of the muffler, time consuming is another problem during modeling and numerical calculation. Combining benefits of both methods, the new code called the hybrid method for car exhaust system is introduced. And the developed code is utilized for calculation of the transmission loss of a main muffler of an automobile comparing with the experimental results.
This study provides a description of the glottal characteristics of the word-initial low vowels /a, $\ae$/ in terms of a set of acoustic parameters and discusses glottal configuration as their acoustic correlates. Furthermore, it examines the effect of prosodic boundary on the glottal properties of the vowels, seeking an account of the possible role of prosodic structure based on prosodic theory. Acoustic parameters reported to indicate glottal characteristics were obtained from the measurements made directly from the speech spectrum on recordings of Korean and English collected from 45 speakers. They consist of two separate groups of native Korean and native English speakers, each including both male and female speakers. Based on the three acoustic parameters of open quotient (OQ), first-formant bandwidth (B1), and spectral tilt (ST), comparisons were made between the speech of males and females, between the speech of native Korean and native English speakers, and between Korean and English produced by native Korean speakers. Acoustic analysis of the experimental data indicates that some or all glottal parameters play a crucial role in differentiating the speech groups, despite substantial interspeaker variations. Statistical analysis of the Korean data indicates prosodic strengthening with respect to the acoustic parameters B1 and OQ, suggesting acoustic enhancement in terms of the degree of glottal abduction and the glottal closure during a vibratory cycle.
