  • The present study presents the design procedures and the acoustic properties of the main hall of Ansan Cultural Arts Center in Korea which has opened in 2004. The acoustic design values are compared with the measured acoustic properties of the completed multi-purpose hall. Acoustic design criteria were suggested in the design stage through the 3-dimentional computer simulations. The acoustic parameters including SPL, RT, C80, $D_{50}$M, RASTI were measured in the hall after completed. Acoustic measurements were carried out in the 40 measurement points using MLS sound source signal in 4 different sound source points. The results show the even distribution of sound levels within the 2.0dB of difference among all seats. The reverberation time of 1.66sec was measured which is similar to the objective value of 1.65 sec in empty states. It was also found that average C80 values lie in the objective extents of C80 from -1 to 3dB and average D50 value of 54 was measured. Thus, it is concluded that the hall can be used as a multi-purpose hall with a suitable acoustic conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the acoustic properties of 9 word initial Korean plosives in the speech of adults with cerebral palsy. Normal adults and two groups of adults with cerebral palsy (athetoid group and spastic group) participated in this study. Speech material included monosyllabic CVC real word pairs. Among the various acoustic properties of plosives, the aspiration duration was measured. Adults with cerebral palsy exhibited different patterns of aspiration duration for triplets of Korean plosives compared to normal adults. In addition, the plosive production of spastic group was distinguished from that of athetoid group. Such acoustic characteristics of plosives of adults with cerebral palsy may negatively affect the intelligibility of their speech.

  • In this work, the carbon fibers-reinforced carbon matrix composites made with different carbon char yields of phenolic resin matrix have been characterized by mechanical flexural tests for acoustic emission properties. The composites had been fabricated in the form of two-dimensional polyacrylonitrile based carbon fibers during the carbonization process. It was found that the composites made with the carbon char yield-rich of resin matrix result in better mechanical interfacial properties, i.e., the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composites. The data obtained from the acoustic emission monitored appeared to show that the composites made with carbon char yield-rich were also more ductile. From the acoustic emission results, the primary composite failure was largely depended on the debonding at interfaces between fibers and matrix. The interlaminar shear strengths of the composites were correlated with the acoustic emission results.

  • Room acoustic properties of coupled rooms connected by an aperture has been analyzed using statistical acoustic model based on the diffused sound field assumption, which has limitation in dealing with the parameters such an room geometries and non uniform absorptivity of the boundary surfaces. In order to overcome these difficulties the acoustic diffusion model has been introduced, by which distribution of the acoustic energy density can be analyzed for various shapes and wall absorptivity. In this study acoustic properties of coupled rooms connected by an aperture(e.g. door) is analyzed using acoustic diffusion equation, which is solved numerically. The mean energy densities of two rooms obtained by the diffusion model are compared with those from the statistical model. The results show good agreement for various coupling aperture sizes and absorption coefficients. For a limiting case when the partition wall is substituted by an aperture and the two rooms eventually forms a single room, results of coupled room analysis using diffusion model show good agreement with those of a single room.

  • A variety of cross-linguistic studies has documented that the acoustic properties of speech addressed to young children include exaggeration of pitch contours and acoustically salient features of phonetic units. It has been suggested that phonetic modifications of child-directed speech facilitate young children's learning of speech sounds by providing detailed phonetic information about the target word. While there are several studies reporting vowel modifications in speech to infants (i.e., hyper-articulated vowels), there has been little research about consonant modifications in speech to young children (except for VOT). The present study examines acoustic properties of Korean stops in Korean mothers' speech to their children (seven children aged 27 to 38 months). Korean tense, lax, and aspirated stops are all voiceless in word-initial position, and are perceptually differentiated by several acoustic parameters including VOT, $f_0$ of the following vowel, and the amplitude difference of the first and second harmonics at the voice onset of the following vowel. This study compares values of these parameters in Korean child-directed speech to those in adult-directed speech from same speakers. Conclusions focus on the acoustic properties of Korean stops in child-directed speech and how they are modified to help Korean young children learn the three-way phonetic contrast.

  • The present paper reviews the micro and nano nondestructive evaluation(NDE) technique that is possible to investigate the surface and measure the acoustic properties. The technical theory, features and applications of the ultrasonic atomic force microscopy(UAFM) and scanning acoustic microscopy(SAM) are illustrated. Especially, these technologies are possible to evaluate the mechanical properties in micro/nano structure and surface through the measurement of acoustic properties in addition to the observation of surface and subsurface. Consequently, it is thought that technique developments and applications of these micro/nano NDE in advanced industrial parts together with present nondestructive industry are widely possible hereafter.

  • To obtain the acoustic properties of dispersive polyurethane with high attenuation, through transmission method was applied by ultrasonic. In through transmission method, the sound velocity and attenuation coefficient of specimen were obtained by using Sachse's method which can be applied to small size specimen. But there is a problem when the reference signal is selected, so the result is not precise. The more precise acoustic properties of polyurethane was obtained when two specimens with different thickness were used. To predict the acoustic properties of low frequency range, the acoustic properties extended to the low frequency range were calculated by Kramers - Kronig relation. As a result, we studied on the relation between the sound velocity and the attenuation coefficient with frequency.

  • Effects of each acoustic property on absorption characteristics of polyester fiber materials has been studied in this paper. It would be impossible for us to measure effects of each acoustic property by experimental method since we cannot make sound-absorbing materials in which only one of the properties is changed. We have adopted a numerical prediction method to carry out parameter studies for each acoustic property. And to get a general behavior of acoustic performance of the materials, the numerical simulation has been repeated to several cases of different bulk density. Finally we have obtained frequency-dependent control factors in the absorption performance which gives us design capability of acoustic absorbing materials.
