Unit cabin means room, which is installed in the high value ship such as drill ship and FPSO, after pre-assembled. In order to develop the noise control design for a unit cabin, a variety of acoustic tests such as sound absorption, transmission, and radiated noise measurements were carried out by using the mock-up of living quarter. From the tests, it was found out that the combined noise level of a unit cabin could be dominated by the radiated noise from wall panel in low frequency range and the design guidelines for the noise control of unit cabin were fully established, such as the improvement of sound transmission loss between the cabin and corridor, and radiated cabin noise reduction.

This paper presents a practical method for reduction of interior noise and improvement of sound quality in compartment of passenger car. The tested vehicle has a booming noise problem at rear passenger seats. In order to identify the transfer path of interior noise, the running modal analysis, the vibro-acoustic frequency transfer response and the noise path analysis are systematically employed. Using these various methods, it has been founded that the rear part of the roof of the test car was a noise source for the booming noise. Through the modification of the roof, the booming noise has been reduced and sound quality inside car also has been improved.

Optimal design of a piezoelectric smart structure is studied for cabin noise control. A cubic shaped acoustic cavity with a flat plate which covers one side is taken as the problem. The sensor signal is returned to the actuator through a negative gain. The acoustic cavity is modeled using the modal approach which represents the pressure fields in the cavity as a sum of mode shapes of the cavity with unknown coefficients. By using orthogonality of the mode shapes of the cavity, finite element equation for the structure with the influence of the acoustic cavity is derived. The objective function is the average pressure at a certain region, so-called silent zone, in the cavity and the design variables are the locations and sizes of the piezoelectirc actuator and sensor. The optimal design is performed at several frequencies and the results show a remarkable noise reduction. To see the robustness of the optimally designed result, the configuration is used to examine the noise reduction at different frequencies. By adjusting the gain at each frequencies, it is possible to reduce the noise in comparison with the result when the actuator is not activated.

In this paper, the transmitted noise reduction performance of piezoelectric smart panels is experimentally studied. The proposed piezoelectric smart panels are comprised of plate structure on which piezoelectric sensor/actuators are bonded and sound absorbing material is provided. It is a combination of passive and active approaches utilizing a passive effect at high frequencies and an active effect at low frequencies. To prove the concept of piezoelectric smart panels, an acoustic measurement experiment is performed. An acoustic tunnel is designed and its acoustic characteristics are tested. Below 800Hz, the tunnel exhibits a plane wave guide characteristics. When an absorbing material is bonded on a single plate, a remarkable transmitted noise reduction in mid frequency range is observed except the first resonance frequency. By enabling the active control of single smart panel with negative feedback control. about 10dB noise reduction is achieved at the resonance frequencies. The double smart panel got 4dB at the first resonance frequency and has more potential to reduce the transmitted noise in a wide range frequency. Piezoelectric smart panels incorporating passive absorbing material and active piezoelectric devices is a promising technology for noise reduction in a wide range frequency.

Enclosures are widely used to alleviate the contribution of machinery noise. It has been long concerned with the noise transmission through the access openings of the enclosures. In this study, we investigate active noise control technology for reduction of the transmission. A numerical model based on the acoustic boundary element method is first established. Using the numerical model, the acoustic transfer functions of the field points over the opening to the primary source at arbitrary locations are estimated. The feedforward control to minimize the acoustic power through the opening is then numerically implemented. The controller drives the secondary source to destructively interfere the noise transmission through the opening. Finally, a parametric study is conducted to evaluate the effects of the location and the number of the microphones on the control performance. Furthermore, the effects of the location of the secondary source on the performance of active noise control are investigated. It is followed that the control system implemented in this study leads to a significant reduction of about 31.5 dB in the sound power through the opening using only one secondary source located at the optimized position.

In the previous study, car interior noise was analyzed using structural acoustic mode coupling coefficients and noise response in vehicle compartment model was simulated by the developed special purpose program. As a continued study, this paper presents a practical scheme for the interior noise reduction of a passenger car. Noisy panels on the vehicle compartment wall could be easily identified by the analysis using mode coupling coefficients. Numerical simulation for noise reduction was carried out on a simplified vehicle compartment model by using panel contribution factor and the noise reduction effect was verified by the structural modification test using Steel Skin (damping sheet).

Macroperforations improve the sound absorption performance of porous materials in acoustic cavities and in waveguides. In an acoustic cavity, enhanced noise reduction is achieved using porous materials having macroperforations. Double porosity materials are obtained by filling these macroperforations with different poroelastic materials having distinct physical properties. The locations of macroperforations in porous layers can be chosen based on cavity mode shapes. In this paper, the effect of variation of macroporosity and double porosity in porous materials on noise reduction in an acoustic cavity is presented. This analysis is done keeping each perforation size constant. Macroporosity of a porous material is the fraction of area covered by macro holes over the entire porous layer. The number of macroperforations decides macroporosity value. The system under investigation is an acoustic cavity having a layer of poroelastic material rigidly attached on one side and excited by an internal point source. The overall sound pressure level (SPL) inside the cavity coupled with porous layer is calculated using mixed displacement-pressure finite element formulation based on Biot-Allard theory. A 32 node, cubic polynomial brick element is used for discretization of both the cavity and the porous layer. The overall SPL in the cavity lined with porous layer is calculated for various macroporosities ranging from 0.05 to 0.4. The results show that variation in macroporosity of the porous layer affects the overall SPL inside the cavity. This variation in macroporosity is based on the cavity mode shapes. The optimum range of macroporosities in poroelastic layer is determined from this analysis. Next, SPL is calculated considering periodic and nodal line based optimum macroporosity. The corresponding results show that locations of macroperforations based on mode shapes of the acoustic cavity yield better noise reduction compared to those based on nodal lines or periodic macroperforations in poroelastic material layer. Finally, the effectiveness of double porosity materials in terms of overall sound pressure level, compared to equivolume double layer poroelastic materials is investigated; for this the double porosity material is obtained by filling the macroperforations based on mode shapes of the acoustic cavity.

Turbulent boundary layer noise is already a significant contributor to sonar self noise. For developing acoustic window of sonar system to reduce self noise, a parametric study of design factors of acoustic window is presented. Distance of sensor array from acoustic window, materials of acoustic window and characteristics of damping layer are studied as design factors to influence in the characteristics of the transfer function of self noise. As the result, these design factors make change the characteristics of transfer function slightly. Among design factors the location of sensor array is most important parameter in the self noise reduction

This paper illustrates the sound vibration phenomenon of mono type TV set produced by spearker and suggests guidelines for reducing the noise induced by the sound vibrations. In order to illustrate the sound vibration phenomenon, the structural acoustic coupled analysis for the grill and cavity of speaker and structural analysis for main frame are performed. To veify the structural analysis results, experimental modal test is carried out. It is found that the acoustic excitation in the cavity is negligible and main sound vibrations occur near the bottom of TV set. An improved model is found by doing structural modifications based on structural analysis and sound vibration tests are performed to verify the validation of the improved model. The obtained results are applied to similar models and design guide lines for noise reduction are suggested.

Two noise reduction systems are proposed in order to overcome the geometric restriction of the reactive muffler such as an expansion chamber. First, membrane is installed as a part of a duct wall and an air cavity is covered outside membrane. Second, membrane is installed inside a duct, which gives no volume change of the duct. Structural-acoustic coupling between membrane and fluid inside the cavity and duct causes rapid impedance mismatching and thereby reflected wave. Theoretical prediction is conducted by using modal expansion approach. The results are compared with the experimental results, which show better noise reduction performance than an expansion chamber.
