  • The Passive acoustic control is used in various fields, such as structures, automobiles, aircraft and so on. It is used in variety of acoustic field with the absorbing material, as one of the methods which can control the acoustic in optional space. In that case of passive control using this absorption material, it would be important to maximize the control performance of material property, numbers, geometry shape and the attached location of boundary area of the absorbing material. But realistically these variables, specially material Property, have no broad choice. Therefore, the position of absorbing material is the most important variable. In this study, we use the optimization method to minimize acoustic energy of optional space in the interest frequency attaching some absorbing materials to the boundary area. For analysis and optimization, this study uses the FEA and the conjugate gradient method. This optimization process is very efficient and useful in the passive acoustic control.

  • Acoustic design parameters of a half-wave resonator are studied experimentally for acoustic stability in a model acoustic tube. According to standard acoustic-test procedures, acoustic-pressure signals are measured. Quantitative acoustic properties of sound absorption coefficient are evaluated and thereby, the acoustic damping capacity of the resonator is characterized. The diameter and the number of a half-wave resonator and the diameter of the tube are selected as design parameters for optimal tuning of the resonator. Optimum acoustic damping capacity is observed at smaller open area ratio as the resonator diameter increases.

  • Ultrasonic relaxation measurements for imidazole and its derivative in phosphate buffer exhibit a high peak of absorption at neutral pH. Near neutral pH, protolysis and hydrosis may be neglected and the essential reaction only consists of a direct proton-exchange. The kinetics constants and the volume changes for the proton transfer reaction with the protonated imidazole and 2-methylimidazole have been determined at 25℃. The kinetics constants are 7.2×108s-1M-1for imidazole and 1.7×108s-1M-1 for 2-methylimidazole. The kinetics constants are used to estimate the spectrum of relaxation times and acoustic relaxation amplitude associated with intermolecular and intramolecular proton-exchange reactions in bilogical media. It is concluded that the magnitude of the acoustic absorption reasonalbly attributable to the perturbation of proton-transfer equilibria between imidazole and inorganic phosphate is comparable in magnitude with the acoustic absorption observed in some intact tissues.

  • The acoustic absorption of a multiple layer perforated plate system is very good near the resonance frequency region, while it has been regarded as a demerit that its frequency bandwidth is considerably narrow. In order to overcome such a demerit, the parallel perforated plates with different porosities are proposed. The sound absorption of such system composed of a parallel perforated plate is calculated by an equivalent electroatoustic circuit approach and validated by comparing the calculated absorption coefficients with those measured by the two-microphone impedance tube method. The sound absorptive characteristics and performance of parallel perforated plate systems are discussed from a standpoint of frequency bandwidth related with sound absorption.

  • Acoustic performances of the steel-wire fabrics manufactured from the crushed tires were experimentally investigated for various thicknesses and bulk densities. The well- known two-cavity method was used to measure the characteristic impedances, the propagation constants, and the absorption coefficients. The normal absorption coefficients measured by the two-cavity method agreed well with those measured by the two-microphone impedance tube method. The experimental results showed that the magnitude and frequency range of the absorption coefficient were controllable by changing the thickness and the bulk density of the steel-wire fabrics. Therefore, the steel-wire fabrics from the crushed tires can be successfully used as a good sound absorbing material.

  • This paper deals with the design techniques for underwater acoustic basin. An underwater acoustic basin is needed for test and calibration of acoustic sensors, acoustic digital communication system, acoustic measurement system, and underwater image data telemetry system. KRISO(Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering) have planned the construction of an underwater acoustic tank from 1999 to 2001 through internal project. We studied about absorbtion characteristics of a porous re-cycled rubber which is selected as a absorption materials and designed absorption plate with wedge shape. The simulation of reflection analysis along the wedge angle for wedged type plate was presented.

  • A linear acoustic analysis is performed to explore the characteristics of acoustic damping by a gas-liquid scheme coaxial injector in a liquid rocket engine. The injector can play a role of acoustic resonator. Acoustic-damping characteristics of half-wave resonator are compared with those of quarter-wave resonator. Various effects of the boundary absorption coefficient, injector length and sound speed in combustion chamber and resonator are investigated. As a result, short tuning length of resonator and low sound speed of the medium have a favorable effect on acoustic damping. As the boundary absorption coefficient decreases, the tuning range of the resonator length becomes narrower.

  • Single absorbing materials and Helmholtz resonators have limited absorption characteristics over limited frequency ranges due to their structures and properties. Porous materials are highly absorptive for mid and high frequency ranges, while they have little sound absorption for low frequency sounds. Helmholtz resonators are generally used to absorb sound energy for a specified frequency range. Hence they have limited capability in controlling the overall acoustic properties of a space. Not much has been known about useful finishing materials which have enough rigidity and absorption over broad frequency range, in spite of wide demands from acoustic designers and consultants. The present work measured and analyzed absorption characteristics of a slit absorber by varying surface materials, depths of air gap, dimensions of slat and slit widths. It was found that the narrower the slit width, the larger the absorptions over the wide frequency ranges and the pattern was dependent on the presence of porous material. Narrower slat's width tend to increase the slit absorber's absorption more or less. Absorption coefficients at low frequency ranges were dramatically improved (from 0.23 to 0.56) by increasing air gap when porous materials were present.

  • Sound absorption coefficient for the absorptive panels comprized of a perforated plate. an absorbent material and an air gap was measured and compared with theoretical value. The absorptive panels are composed of three basic combinations (a perforated plate + an air gap + an absorbent material. a perforated plate + an absorbent material, a perforated plate + an absorbent material + an air gap). As a result. it is found that the sound absorption for low frequency range is strongly affected by the resonance produced by perforated plate and air gap. And the sound absorption for high frequency depends on the porosity of perforated plate.
