New Strategy of Forest Tree Breeding for Society, Forest Science, and Forestry in Korea

  • Social and scientific changes, i.e., global warming, desertification, pollution, biodiversity, bioenergy, plant variety protection, biotechnology, timber demand, reforestation in North Korea, and etc., were reviewed for new strategy of forest tree breeding in Korea. Diversified breeding goals, globalization of breeding target species, multidisciplinary research approaches, manpower networking, establishment of new administrative and research units in KFS and KFRI were proposed. Principles suggested for new tree breeding strategy are: 1) multi-disciplinary approach in settlement of objectives, breeding methods, and etc., 2) expansion of target trees including foreign species, 3) fulfillment of both domestic and international demands for forest tree breeding, 4) establishment of breeding program well-grounded on genetic resources conservation, 5) acknowledgement of breeding products (i.e., variety, technique, gene, and etc.) as goods, and 6) provision of more research opportunities for young scientists. Lastly, ongoing tree breeding project in Indonesia and NTFP R&D Center at the College of Forest and Environmental Sciences, Kangwon National University were introduced as examples of desirable breeding projects based on target species diversification, multidisciplinary approach, and manpower networking.

  • No one really doubts that the hottest area of dentistry in 21st century would most likely be 'implant'. With the support of a vast amount of research, implant has been successfully and rapidly absorbed into the field of general dentistry including private practitioners. For teeth with hopeless(or refractory) periodontitis or periapical pathosis, with no hesitation most dentists would think extraction as the sole treatment option followed by prosthodontic replacement possibly including implant. Not many dentists would take Trasplantation/Replantation as another treatment option for a particular condition. Dentistry is often more focused on 'Restoration' than 'Preservation' of natural dentition. 'Biologic Implant' is obviously much closer to the concept of 'Preservation'. Many different types of biologic implant system have been introduced to clinical dentistry so far. Many of those have failed to earn reasonable acknowledgement despite of the clinical success they brought. For some reason biologic implant has rather been alienated for long time. RPI(Ring Pin Implant) is designed to improve the prognosis and success rate of transplanted/replanted teeth. RPI is a Ti-based custom made implant system. It is fabricated either by electric casting or milling process. The major feature RPI gas is the 'ring & hole' structure. The hole should be no less than 1mm diameter to allow bone bridge formation thru it. The ring structure and bone bridge formation creates anti-torque activity, which largely increases the 'initial stability' of the transplanted/replanted teeth. It is also reported that RPI is beneficial in the aspect of resisting root resorption following replantation/transplantation procedure.

  • Rating system, which generated by struggling and negotiating of many social groups, helps us to anyalyze plenty of social factors. With this point of view this article attempts to examine the game rating system of Iran, that started in 2009. At the beginning, the nubmber and ratio of prohibited games were very high. Most prohibited games have contents of violence with religious distortion or women's nudity. But recently the case of prohibition is not seen and the ratio of age rate is changed to that of other countries. The system and operation of ESRA is influenced by multiple factors like the willingness to support game industry of government, the understanding of industrial value, the acknowledgement of cultural effect of game and etc.

Feasibility of Proton Chemical Shift Imaging with a Stereotactic Headframe

  • Purpose: To prove feasibility of proton chemical shift imaging (lH CSI) during stereotactic procedure, authors performed IH CSI in combination with a stereotactic headframe and selected targets according to local metabolic information, evaluated the pathologic results. Methods: The 1H CSI directed stereotactic biopsy was performed in five patients. 1H CSI was performed before conventional stereotactic MRI with gadolinium enhancement for stereotactic coordinates. The metabolite images expressed as integral ratios, Cho/Cr and Lac/Cr, were displayed in different colors. The stereotactic target coordinates were correlated with the coordinates from the 1H CSI images. Results: The final pathologic results obtained were concordant with the local metabolic information from 1H CSI. We believe that 1H CSI-directed stereotatic biopsy has the potential to significantly improve the accuracy of stereotactic biopsy targeting. Conclusions : Metabolic signals derived from 1H CSI could give us more direct clues for stereotactic target selection during the subsequent conventional stereotactic MR imaging. 1H CSI was feasible with the stereotatic headframe in place. The final pathologic results obtained were concordant with the local metabolic information from 1H CSI. Proton MR Spectroscopic Changes in Parkinson's Disease

  • Purpose: To investigate whether there are significant changes in regional brain metabolism in patients with Parkinson's disease after thalamotomy using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (lH MRS). Methods: Fifteen patients with Parkinson's disease of mean age 56.5 years (7 males and 8 females; mean age, 56.5 years) that have treated with levodopa were included. All patients with tremor experienced amelioration of their symptoms on the side contralateral to the thalamotomy. As a single-voxel technique, 1H MR spectra were obtained from the volume of interested regions in thalamus and primary motor cortex. Spectral parameters were: 20 ms TE, 2000 ms TR, 128 averages, 2500 Hz spectral width, and 2048 data points. Results: We found that NAA/Cho ratios showed generally low levels in thalamus in Parkinson's disease patients with clinical improvement following thalamotomy. Conclusions: 1H MRS may be a useful utility for the aid in better understanding the pathophy-siologic process in Parkinson's disease patients on the basis of the variation of NAA/Cho ratio. Assessment of Malignancy in Brain Tumors by 3T MR Spectroscopy

  • Purpose: To assess clinical proton MR spectroscopy (MRS) as a noninvasive method for evaluating tumor malignancy at 3T high field system. Methods: Using 3T MRI/MRS system, localized water-suppressed single-voxel technique in patients with brain tumors was employed to evaluate spectra with peaks of N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), choline-containing compounds (Cho), creatine/phosphocreatine (Cr) and lactate. On the basis of Cr, these peak areas were quantificated as a relative ratio. Results: The variation of metabolites measurements of the designated region in 10 normal volunteers was less than 10%. Normal ranges of NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr ratios were 1.67$\pm$018 and 1.16:1:0.15, respectively. NAA/Cr ratio of all tumor tissues was significantly lower than that of the normal tissues (P=0.005). Cho/Cr ratio of high-grade gliomas was significantly higher than that of low-grade gliomas (P= 0.001), Except 4 menigiomas, lactate signal was observed in all tumor cases. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that the neuronal degradation or loss was observed in all tumor tissues. Higher grade of brain tumors was correlated with higher Cho/Cr ratio, indicating a significant dependence of Cho levels on malignancy of gliomas. This results suggest that clinical proton MR spectroscopy could be useful to predict tumor malignancy. Motor Cortex in Hemiparetic Patients due to Deep Intracerebal Hematoma

  • Purpose: To determine the motor cortex dysfunction in hemiparetic patients due to deep intracerebral hematoma, authors performed proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (lH MRS) for the evaluation of biochemical changes in the cortex on affected hemisphere according to axonal injury at the level of internal capsule. Methods: Ten control subjects and 14 patients with documentable hemiparesis of varying severity hemiparesis were included. All the hemiparesis was caused by deep intracerebral hematoma (putaminal and thalamic hemorrhage). In vivo 1H MRS study was performed on a 3T MRI/MRS system using STEAM sequence. As a single-voxel technique, Spectral parameters were: 20 ms TE, 2000 ms TR, 128 averages, 2500 Hz spectral width, and 2048 data points. Results: We found that the mean N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/phosphocreatine (Cr) and NAA/choline (Cho) ratios were significantly decreased in the motor cortex of the hemiparesis patients compared with control subjects. Conclusions: 1H MRS examinations of the motor cortex might help to differentiate distinct clinical entities of hemiparesis and to monitor pharmacological effects in therapeutic trials, providing a quantitative biological marker for motor neuron dysfunction. Comparison about TCP and Snoop protocol on wired and wireless integrated network (유무선 혼합망에서 TCP와 Snoop 프로토콜 비교에 관한 연구)

  • As the TCP is the protocol designed for the wired network that packet loss probability is very low, because TCP transmitter takes it for granted that the packet loss by the wireless network characteristics is occurred by the network congestion and lowers the transmitter's transmission rate, the performance is degraded. The Snoop Protocol was designed for the wired network by putting the Snoop agent module on the BS(Base Station) that connect the wire network to the wireless network to complement the TCP problem. The Snoop agent cash the packets being transferred to the wireless terminal and recover the loss by resending locally for the error occurred in the wireless link. The Snoop agent blocks the unnecessary congestion control by preventing the dupack (duplicate acknowledgement)for the retransmitted packet from sending to the sender and hiding the loss in the wireless link from the sender. We evaluated the performance in the wired/wireless network and in various TCP versions using the TCP designed for the wired network and the Snoop designed for the wireless network and evaluated the performance of the wired/wireless hybrid network in the wireless link environment that the continuous packet loss occur.

A Study on the Relation between King Hyeonjong's Diseases and the Controversy about the Confucian Funerary Rituals (조선 현종의 질병과 예송논쟁의 관계에 대한 연구)

  • King Hyeonjong, the 18th king of the Chosun Dynasty, reigned for 15 years. During his reign, he underwent a political incident named the Controversy about the Confucian Funerary Rituals. This incident was carried out 2 times: 1 time during early days of his reign and 1 time during later days. Although it started out as a trivial dispute over the period Queen Dowager Ja-eui(stepmother of King Hyojong, Hyeonjong's father) had to wear a mourning dress, it advanced to a political incident concerning the acknowledgement of King Hyeonjong's legitimacy and political pride of the king and the vassals. Although existing researches focus on the historical context of this incident, this study focuses on the relationship between this incident and King Hyeonjong's disorders. During the First Controversy about the Confucian Funerary Rituals, King Hyeonjong was treated for various symptoms concerning hypochondria. During the Second Controversy, he suffered from septicemia as well as diabetic complications. This study is based on the texts of "The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Chosun Dynasty".

  • ERP system is a good one because it provides required data to the Board of Directors at the right time, but needs to collect many data in this system. Nevertheless, increase in data leads to the system's quality deterioration which makes companies to carry out quality improvement. In order to solve quality deterioration problem, a company's quality improvement director must execute under acknowledgement of the relationships between sectors to be improved, which are DBMS, Application, System, Data Management, Archiving, and Reorganization. But in many cases, these relationships are ignored due to massive size of each of the sectors, resulting fragmental quality improvement operation. This case paper proposes a solution to effectively solve quality deterioration problem created by the massive data produced while operating ERP System(constructed by SAP package and web). First, it defines the sectors where quality improvements are vital, and lists out things to be considered. Then, by analysing the working process of these sectors, proposes the most efficient order of the improvement process. This case will eventually help the company's quality improvement director to execute quality improvement most effectively without trials and errors, which is this paper's ultimate goal.
