The purpose of this study is to investigate elementary school science gifted students' perceptions about Earth systems and environmental problems. A total of 28 students in the attached center for science gifted education to the university participated in this study. Through the survey, participating students were asked to respond to their self-reported knowledge level, the perceived danger levels, certainty, and tangibility of the selected 13 Earth environmental problems. The DAET (Draw-An-Earth Test)-Checklist were developed and used to analyze the images of the Earth drawn by students. Additional interviews were conducted to clarify the meanings and components of students' image. Results indicated that a total of 80 components regarding Earth systems, 11 components of Earth systems interaction, and 4 components related to Earth systems literacy were identified through the DAET-Checklist and additional interviews. Regarding the students' self-reported knowledge level, they reported that they were most knowledgeable about air pollution, global warming, and water pollution. and they also recognized global warming, air pollution, and water pollution as the most dangerous problem. Results indicated that participants were certain that acid rain, air pollution, and water pollution were problematic, and that acid rain, air pollution, and forest desertification were tangible issues. It is anticipated that this study contributes to understanding the elementary school science gifted students' perceptions toward the selected Earth systems and environmental problems.

Recently, many types of constructional steels have been often exposed to under severe corrosive environments due to acid rain with increasing environmental contamination. In order to inhibit their corrosion in severe corrosive environments, a painting method has been widely applied to numerous constructional steels of land as well as marine. Therefore, development of paint having a good quality of corrosion resistance is considered to be very important. In this study, four types of anti-corrosive paints (AP: Phenol epoxy, AC: Ceramic epoxy, AT: Coal tar epoxy, AH: High solid epoxy) were coated to the specimens, and then, were immerged in various salt solutions (0.1, 0.3, 3, 6, 9 and 15% NaCl solutions) for 11 days. And, the corrosion resistance of these samples by effect of osmotic pressure with salt concentration was investigated with electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, impedance and corrosion current density. The corrosion current densities of all samples (AC, AT and AH) submerged in 3% NaCl solution exhibited the smallest values compared to other salt solutions. However, in the case of lower values of salt solutions than 3% NaCl solution, the corrosion current density increased again because it makes easier for water, dissolved oxygen and chloride ion etc. to invade toward inner side of coating film due to increasing of the osmotic pressure than 3% NaCl solution, but in the case of higher values of salt solutions than 3% NaCl solution, the coating film is easily deteriorated due to high concentration of chloride ion rather than the osmotic pressure, which resulted in increasing the corrosion current density. In particular, the AC sample indicated the best corrosion resistance in 6% NaCl solution compared to other samples. Consequently, it is considered that the corrosion mechanism of the coated steel plate is completely different from bare steel plate, and the corrosion resistance of coating film by osmotic pressure and chloride ion depend on various types of epoxy of paint in NaCl solution.
A green house experiment was conducted to investigate the growth of Chinese cabbage, radish and soybean and change in the chemical properties of the soil after the 10mm application of the simulated acid rain(SAR) of pH 2.7 in the form of sprinkle and mist. It was applied 30 times for Chinese cabbage and radish and 62 times for soybean at the two-day intervals. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Visual damages caused by SAR were dark-brown or red brown leaf spots in Chinese cabbage, and dark-brown and wrinkled leaf margins in radish and soybean. 2. The degree of visual damages became severer as the number of SAR applications increased and it was severer with mist than with sprinkle of SAR. 3. Chlorophyll content was reduced by SAR, but it was not affected by the form of SAR application(sprinkle or mist) in all crops, although it was slightly lower with mist than with sprinkle of SAR. 4. Fresh weight of Chinese cabbage heads and radish roots and grain yield of soybean were reduced by SAR, and were not affected by the form of SAR application. 5. Contents of K, Ca, and Mg in leaves were reduced, while S content increased by SAR in all crops. The forms of SAR application did not affect contents of mineral nutrients in all crops. 6. SAR decreased soil pH and the contents Ca, Mg, and K of soil, while increased $SO_4$ content. However, the contents of soil organic matter, N, and P were not affected by SAR. Forms of SAR application did not affect soil chemical properties either.
A green-house experiment was conducted to investigate the growth of Chinese cabbage, radish, and soybean and changes in soil chemical properties after application of 5 and 10mm of pH 2.7 simulated acid rain(SAR) followed by 0, 5, and 10mm of pH 6.0 normal water at the three-day intervals 20 times for Chinese cabbage and radish and 42 times for soybean. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Visual damages by SAR were white-yellow leaf spots, dark brown or light green leaf color, and wrinkled leaf margins in all crops. The degree of visual damages was severer at 10mm than at 5mm SAR and it was reduced as the amounts of normal water increased after SAR application. 2. Chlorophyll content was higher at 10mm than at 5mm SAR application and increased as the amounts of normal water increased after SAR application in all crops. 3. Fresh weights of Chinese cabbage heads and radish roots and grain yield of soybean were higher at 10mm than at 5mm SAR, while they increased as the amounts of normal water increased at the same SAR level. 4. Changes in the mineral contents of plants were not consistent, while S content in radish and soybean increased as the amounts of SAR increased. 5. SAR lowered soil pH, while it increased soil N and S contents. Contents of soil organic matter, P, and exchangeable Ca, Mg, and K were not affected by the amounts of SAR.
Outdoor iron artefacts are easily corroded by salts, especially $Cl^-$ion, from environmental pollutants and acid rain because of their location, so that they need conservational treatments such as stabilization. However the conservation of outdoor iron artefacts are limited to be consolidated for the present and there are a few the studies for the desalinization. The general desalinization method is that objects are immersed in reagent such as alkaline corrosion inhibiting solutions targeting on buried iron artefacts, thus they are not available for outdoor iron artefacts. In this study, concerning those difficulties, the different desalting method is experimented that materials soaked in alkaline solutions attach to objects and they are packed by waterproof to avoid evaporation. This paper experiment burial iron artefacts at first in order to fine out an adaptable method for outdoor iron artefacts. The soaking materials are Korean traditional paper, gauze, cotton wipers, spill pads and the desalting regent is NaOH 0.1M. Additionally the exiting desalinization method which is to immerse objects in solution is performed to compare. The analyses are microscopes, SEM-EDS, X-ray diffraction, pH meter and Ion chromatography. The result is that spill pads show the best desalting effect out of other materials similar to immersing desalting method.

Because the stone cultural properties located outdoors, they have been altered and deteriorated in external appearance due to environmental factors such as acid rain, extreme change in temperature, and salts. Damage to stone cultural properties is accelerated particularly due to recent industrial development and environmental pollution. An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effect of environmental contaminants on the weathering of granite. And as part of the developing of conservation method, $TiO_2$ catalyst was prepared and tested. When fresh granite was dipped into the salt and acid solutions, dissolution rate of eight minerals (Si, Mg, Ca, Na, K, Fe, Mn, Al) are abruptly increased at initial stage of reaction and then increased steadily until 100 cycles. After salt and acid solution experiments, the mineral compositions of the granite surface were lower then that of the fresh granite and density of the weathered granite was steadily decreased from $2.60\;g/cm^3$ to $2.56\;g/cm^3$, but Poissions ratio and absorption ratio were slightly increased. It was expected at stone cultural assets could be weathered by salts and acid rain. In the case of $TiO_2$ was coated to the granite, the dissolution rate of minerals and absorption ratio of $TiO_2$ coated granite were decreased. Therefore, the $TiO_2$ coating method tested in this study considered to be a viable method to assist in the conservation of stone cultural properties from environmental contaminants.
In order to evaluate the geochemical behaviors of elements with waste rocks in the abandoned Jangpoong Cu mine area, total concentration analysis and leaching experiments were performed. The content of elements within waste rocks compared with background values decreased in order of As>>Cu>Pb>Cd>Co. Leaching experiments were carried out at various extraction environments, considering the acid rain ($0.00001{\sim}0.001N\;HNO_3$) and the acid mine drainage ($0.001{\sim}0.1N$ HNO3). After 24 hours of reaction with different acidic solution, the leaching characteristics of waste rocks were classified into three types according to final pH of leaching solution. Type I refers to the case that the final pH of leaching solution was lower than that of the reaction solution due to the dissolution of acidic minerals from rocks, while type 2 and 3 refer to the case that the final pH maintained higher than that of the reaction solution. Theses types include in acid buffering minerals such as clay minerals and carbonate minerals. The leaching characteristics of the elements after the reaction could be categorized into As-Co-Fe, Cu-Mn-Cd-Zn, and Pb. As-Co-Fe started to get leached under 2.5 of pH regardless of changes in the final pH, and Cu-Mn-Cd-Zn showed different initial leaching pH according to the types of final pH changes. Based on the pH value where leaching started regardless of leaching concentration, the relative mobility of each element was in the order of Mn Zn>Cd>Cu>>Fe Co>As>Pb. Thus, more higher mobility elements(Zn, Mn and Cu) were leached by reacting with acid rain water. Acid mine drainage may result in distributions of elements having relatively less mobility(As, Fe, Co and Pb).
One of the main interests in relation to heavily contaminated gully-pot sediment in urban area is the short term mobility of heavy metals, which depends on the pH of acidic rainwater and on the buffering effects of carbonate minerals. The buffering effects of carbonates are determined by titration (acid addition). Leaching experiments are carried out in solutions with variable initial HN03 contents for 24h. The gully-pot sediment appears to be predominantly buffered by calcite and dolomite. In case of sediment samples, which highly contain carbonates, pH decreases more slowly with increasing acidity. On the other hand, for the sediment samples, which less contain carbonate minerals, pH rapidly drops until it reaches about 2 then it decreases slowly. The leaching reactions are delayed until more acid is added to compensate for the buffering effects of carbonates. The Zn, Cu, Pb and Mn concentrations of leachate rapidly increase with decreased pH, while Cd, Co, Ni, Cr and Fe dissolutions are very slow and limited. The solubility of heavy metals depends not only on thc pH values of leachatc but also on the speciation in which metals are associated with sediment particles. In slightly to moderately acid conditions, Zn, Cd, Co, Ni and Cu dissolutions become increasingly important. As deduced from leaching runs, the relative mobility of heavy metals at pH of 5 is found to be: Zn > Cd > Co > Ni > Cu » Pb > Cr, suggesting that moderately acid rainwater leach Zn, Cd, Co, Ni and Cu from thc contaminated gully-pot sediment, while Pb and Cr would remain fixed. The buffering effects of Ca- and Mg-carbonates play an important role in delaying as well as limiting the leaching reactions of heavy metals from highly contaminated gully-pot sediment. The extent of such a secondary environmental pollution will thus depends on how well the metals in sediment can be leached by somewhat acidic rain water. Changes in the physicochemical environments may result in the severe environmental pollution of heavy metals. These results are to be taken into account in the management of contaminated sediments during rainstorms.

In order to investigate the chemical components of acid precipitation at Kangwha near the Yellow Sea and Seoul in Korea, the precipitation samples were collected by wetonly precipitation sampler from February 1991 to January 1992, and pH, electric conductivity(E. C.) and major water-soluble ionic components were analyzed. Strong negative linear correlations were observed between the rainfall amount and the sum of major ionic components in $\mu eq/\ell$ at two sites. The sum of major ionic components also correlated negatively with rain intensity. The analytical results of precipitation samples at two sites were compared each other. Average values of volume-weighted pH were found to be 5.21 at Kangwha and 5.09 at Seoul. The cationic abundance($\mu eq/\ell$) in rainwater showed the general trend $NH_4^+ > Na^+ > Ca^{2+} > Mg^{2-+} > H^+ > K^+$ at Kangwah and $NH_4^+ > Ca^{2+} > Na^+ > H^+ > Mg^{2+} > K^+$ at Seoul. The anionic abundance showed the general trend $SO_4^{2-} > Cl^- > NO_3^-$ at Kangwha and $SO_4^{2-} > NO_3^- > Cl^-$ at Seoul. The concentrations of seasalt such as $Na^+ and Cl^-$ were higher at Kangwha than Seoul. The concentrations of $nss-SO_4^{2-}, nss-Cl^- and NO_3^-$ which are acid composition were higher at Seoul(96.3 $\mu eq/\ell$) than Kangwha(69.0 $\mu eq/\ell$). The contribution of seasalt to the composition of precipitation were higher at Kangwha(34.1%) than Seoul(15.7%). Ammonia and calcium species in rainwater at Kangwha and Seoul are interpreted to have 91% of neutralizing capacity of the original sulfuric and nitric acids. Provided that the precipitation acidity originates primarily from sulfate and nitrate, sulfate was found to contribute about 73-75% of the free precipitation acidity.

Galvanizing method has been extensively used to the numerous constructional steels such as a guard rail of high way, various types of structural steel for ship building and various types of steels for the industrial fields etc.. However, the galvanized structures would be inevitably corroded rapidly with increasing exposed time because an acid rain due to environmental contamination has been much dropped more and more. Therefore, it has been made an effort to improve the corrosion resistance of the galvanizing film through various methods. In this study, comparison evaluation on the corrosion resistance of three types of the samples, that is, the hot dip galvanizing with pure zinc(GI), the hot dip galvanizing of alloy bath with zinc and aluminum(GL) and the pure zinc galvanizing steel immersed again to chromate treatment bath(Chro.)were investigated using electrochemical methods in 1% $H_2SO_4$ solution. The Chro. and GI samples exhibited the highest and lowest corrosion resistance respectively in 1% $H_2SO_4$ solution, however, the GI sample revealed the highest impedance at 0.01 Hz due to its high resistance polarization caused by corrosion products deposited on the surface, while Chro. sample exhibited the lowest impedance at 0.01 Hz because of little corrosion products on the surface. Consequently, it is suggested that the chromate treated steel has a better corrosion resistance in acid environment compared to pure galvanizing(GI) or galvalume(GL) steels.
