  • Deep Interests have been paid on the application of non-thermal plasma technique to solve the environmental pollution problems. $CO_2$, is one of the severe pollutants which cause the acid rain and global warming. In this study, in order to improve the conversion efficiency of $CO_2$, the streamer corona discharge plasma and barrier discharge plasma reactors were made, and the conversion characteristics of $CO_2$by the corona discharge plasma and some discharge characteristics of these discharge chambers are studied experimentally.

  • The nitrogen oxides, NO and NO2, abbreviated usually as NOx, emitted from combustion facilities such as power plants and automobiles are the typical air-pollutants causing acid rain and photochemical smog. In order to solve the NOx-related pollution problems effectively, we need efficient techniques to monitor NOx in the combustion exhausts and in environments. Development of solid-state electrochemical devices for detecting NOx is demonstrated based on various combination of solid electrolytes and auxiliary sensing materials. The object of this research is to develop various sensor performance for solid state amperometric sensor, and to test gas sensor performance manufactured. So we try to present a guidance for developing amperometric gas sensor. We concentrated on development of manufacturing process and performance test.

  • In this paper, aging characteristics of outdoor silicone rubber insulator resulting from the acid rain have been investigated with regards to nitrate ion ($NO^{-1}_{3}$ ). For this purpose, silicone rubber was aged by immersing into the nitric solutions with different level pH during 1500 hours and various tests (tracking, tan $\delta$, breakdown voltage, SEM, EDS, contact angle) were performed. It was observed that the degradation was increased to pH 2.5 slightly and at pH 1.5 highly. And thus, it could be expected that there is certain critical point between pH 1.5 and 2.5, which leads to throught degradation.

  • Review of the global change in various energy usages and resulting environmental impacts were made in terms of population increase, economic development and energy consumption. Greater use of fossil fuels in past couple of centuries give rise to acid rain and gradual climate changes mainly due to Green House inducing gases emissions from fossil fuel combustion. In view of the forthcoming Kyoto conference in December, various alternative options were assessed. To cope with rapidly developing robust Korean economy, the alternative energy options for the sustainable development in 21st Century would be the wider use of Nuclear Energy in parallel with constrained use of fossil fuel and renewable energy development. However there are many hurdles to overcome. One of the most important element is to improve public acceptability of those alternatives. Since public acceptance depend heavily upon individual perception on specific energy technology applications, the basic energy technologies education from primary up to high school education and the related curriculum organization is important. The suggested improvement in education for Nuclear Energy Application was made on the basis of advanced industrial countries with substantial Nuclear Energy Application programs.

  • Environmental pollution is continuously increasing with the economic growth and industrial development. With this trend, soil and groundwater pollution problem has been surfaced as important social issues. Recently, Korean government promulgated the Soil Environment Conservation Act. But there are many problems to control sound soil quality management. Anthropogenic source of pollution such as waste landfill, pesticides, fertilizer, underground storage oil tanks is important as well as natural source such as acid rain and forest fire. The regulation should be expanded to include groundwater preservation as well as soil quality, because soil pollution is closely related to groundwater pollution. Therefore, legal regulations must be expanded to these facilities and take into account technical feasibility and finance.

  • Recently, reinforced concrete structures exposed to severe enviroment are increased in metropolitan area. The acid rain and CO2 penetrated towad rebar, thus rebar corrosion occurred. The corrosion of rebar in concrete is, as in most corrosion processes, an electrochemical nature. The corrosion may severely affect on durability and service life of such a concrete structures. This study was performed for the purpose of acquiring data about corrosion condition and considering a countermeasure to prevent rebar from corroding due to carbonation of concrete. An accelerated car bonation testing procedure was applied to measure the evolution of carbonation and rebar corrosion with time for various water-binder ratios and cement types.

Characteristics of Material Damage Caused by Acid Deposition in East Asia

  • Material exposure experiments were performed to evaluate the relationship between air pollution and material corrosion rates based on collaboration with researchers in China, Japan, and Korea. Qualitative and quantitative atmospheric corrosion was estimated from damage caused to bronze, copper, steel, marble, cedar, cypress, and lacquer plates exposed to outdoor and indoor conditions in certain East Asian cities. The effects of atmospheric and meteorological factors on the damage to the copper plates and marble pieces were estimated using a regression analysis. The results indicated that sulfur dioxide produced the most destruction of the materials, especially in South Korea and China. In Japan, the copper plates were damaged as a result of natural conditions and sea salt. Copper was also found to be damaged by the surface deposition of sulfur and chlorine. Meanwhile, marble was substantially degraded by gaseous sulfur dioxide, yet sulfate ions in rain had no effect. Accordingly, the analysis of air pollution from the perspective of material damage was determined to be very useful in evaluating and substantiating the intensity of air pollution in East Asia.

Elementary Students' Perceptions of Earth Systems and Environmental Issues

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the elementary students' perceptions of Earth systems and environmental issues. A survey was conducted to determine the students' perceptions on the following aveas: (1) the concepts of certainty and tangibility, (2) self-reported knowledge level, (3) perceived danger level of selected eight Earth systems and environmental issues, and (4) their primary information source on these issues. Results indicated that ozone hole, acid rain, El $Ni\widetilde{n}o$, and global warming were identified by the students as uncertain and intangible issues. Perceived certainty and perceived tangibility were highly positively correlated with self-reported knowledge compared to other relationships. The results also showed that learning from school was the most frequent information source for environmental issues. The second most frequently used source of information was television among several mass media sources. It is hoped that this study contributes to understanding the elementary school students' perceptions toward the selected Earth systems and environmental issues.
