Open heart surgery has been performed on 20 patients, using hemodilution principle under the moderate hypothermia from Dec. 1975 through Aug. 1977 at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Kyungpook National University School of Medicine. All these patients, body surface area ranged from 0.53 to 1.67$M^2$, were divided into two groups as a child group [below 15 yrs] and a adult group[above 15 yrs]. The oxygenator were primed with fresh ACD blood, 5 per cent dextrose, Hartmann`s solution, 15 per cent mannitol, sodium bicarbonate, dexamethasone and antibiotics. The average flow rate was 2.0 L/$M^2$/min. in child group and 2.3L/$M^2$/min. in adult group. The degree of hemodilution in child and adult group was 30.7% and 29.3% respectively. The minimal value of rectal temperature was $30.84{\pm}0.7^{\circ}C.$, in child group and $30.0{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C.$, in adult group. We studied the changes of hemodynamic status, blood components, electrolyte, acid-base status. blood lactic acid and urine output during and after cardiopulmonary bypass.
This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of quercetin and desferrioxamine on the development of the reflux esophagitis induced surgically, on gastric secretion and on lipid peroxidation which is a marker of oxidative stress. Omeprazole was used as a positive control drug. Omeprazole significantly and dose-dependently prevented the development of reflux esophagitis, but quercetin or desferrioxamine prevented only at high dose. Omeprazole significantly and dose-dependently inhibited the gastric acid secretion (gastric volume, pH and acid output), but quercetin or desferrioxamine did not inhibit. Malonyldialdehyde content, the end product of lipid peroxidation, increased significantly after the induction of reflux esophagitis. Omeprazole prevented lipid peroxidation. Quercetin and desferrioxamine inhibited the lipid peroxidation independent of their actions on gastric secretion. This result indicates that omeprazole confirmed preventing effect of rat reflux esophagitis, but quercetin and desferrioxamine inhibited esophagitis by reduction of lipid peroxidation irrespective of gastric acid secretion.
Intracellular lipid-binding proteins (LBPs) impact fatty acid homeostasis in various ways, including fatty acid transport into mitochondria. However, the physiological consequences caused by mutations in genes encoding LBPs remain largely uncharacterized. Here, we explore the metabolic consequences of lbp-5 gene deficiency in terms of energy homeostasis in Caenorhabditis elegans. In addition to increased fat storage, which has previously been reported, deletion of lbp-5 attenuated mitochondrial membrane potential and increased reactive oxygen species levels. Biochemical measurement coupled to proteomic analysis of the lbp-5(tm1618) mutant revealed highly increased rates of glycolysis in this mutant. These differential expression profile data support a novel metabolic adaptation of C. elegans, in which glycolysis is activated to compensate for the energy shortage due to the insufficient mitochondrial ${\beta}$-oxidation of fatty acids in lbp-5 mutant worms. This report marks the first demonstration of a unique metabolic adaptation that is a consequence of LBP-5 deficiency in C. elegans.
In a preliminary screening of plant extracts for the antigastritic and antiulcer actions in rats, the methanol extracts of Taheebo showed positive activity in HCI . ethanol-induced gastric lesion. Among the systematic fractions of hexane, chloroform, butanol and water, the most potent $H_2O$ fraction reduced significantly HCI . ethanol-induced gastric lesion at the oral dose of 300 mg/kg. In pylorus ligated rats chloroform and butanol fraction showed decreases in the volume of gastric secretion and acid output of which effects were stronger in chloroform fraction. Further assays with hexane butanol and $H_2O$ fraction disclosed that it significantly suppressed the aspirin-induced ulcer. The butanol fraction reduced significantly acetic acid induced ulcer at the dose of 400 mg/kg. The butanol and $H_2O$ fraction reduced the malondialdehyde level in HCI . ethanol-induced gastric lesion. In pylorus ligated rats, chloroform and butanol fraction reduced the malondialdehyde level and in aspirin-induced ulcer, chloroform fraction reduced that levle. These results might suggest that the butanol and $H_2O$ fraction of Taheebo had inhibitory action in gastric lesion and ulceration through inhibition of gastric acid secretion and the decrease malondialdehyde level.
This paper proposed an optimal operation strategy for a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) with a lithium-ion battery and lead-acid battery for mild hybrid electric vehicles (mild HEVs). The proposed mild HEV system is targeted to mount the electric motor and the battery to a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle. Because the proposed mild HEV includes the motor and energy storage device of small capacity, the system focuses on low system cost and small size. To overcome these limitations, it is necessary to use a lead acid battery which is used for a vehicle. Thus, it is possible to use more energy using HESS with a lithium battery and a lead storage battery. The HESS, which combines the lithium-ion battery and the secondary battery in parallel, can achieve better performance by using the two types of energy storage systems with different characteristics. However, the system requires an operation strategy because accurate and selective control of the batteries for each situation is necessary. In this paper, an optimal operation strategy is proposed considering characteristics of each energy storage system, state-of-charge (SOC), bidirectional converters, the desired output power, and driving conditions in the mild HEV system. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated through several case studies with respect to energy capacity, SOC, battery characteristic, and system efficiency.
The rhizoma of Zingiber officinale has been used as antiemetic, expectorants, stomachache relieving drugs and digestive accelerators. From the observation of antigastritic action of the methanol extract of the rhizoma, it was fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol, followed by bioassay on antigastritic and antiulcerative activity. The hexane and the chloroform fraction reduced significantly HCl ethanol induced gastric lesion at the dose of 370 and 210 mg/kg, p.o., respectively. On the gastric ulceration and gastric secretion in pylorus-ligated rats, the hexane fraction decreased the volume of gastric secretion and acid output, and also increased pH at the dose of 370 mg/kg, i.d.. It showed considerable curative ratio of acetic acid induced ulcer without inhibition of indomethacin induced gastric lesion. The methanol extract showed low acute toxicity with minimum lethal dose of more than 3000 mg/kg, p.o. in mice. In conclusion, Zingiberis rhizoma exhibited antigastric and antiulcerative activity which might be attributable to inhibition of gastric secretion. It is revealed that the active component may be present in the hexane fraction.
Gastritis and gastric ulcer were known to be induced by gastic acid, stress, ethanol, Helicobacter pylori and free radical, etc. This study was performed for the development of a new drug or nutraceutical from medicinal plants or natural products with anti-gastritis, anti-ulcerative and gastroprotective activities. The water extract of Scutellaria baicalensis was exhibited potent inhibition in HCl ethanol-induced gastric lesion, acetic acid-induced and Shay ulcers, indicating the effects on gastric lesion and ulcer in rats. The water extract of Scutellaria baicalensis significantly inhibited HCl ethanol-induced gastric lesions at the oral dose of 300, 500 mg/kg. In pylorus ligated rats, the treatments of the water extract from Scutellaria baicalensis showed decrease in the volume of gastric secretion and acid output and increase pH at oral dose of 300, 500 mg/kg. And significantly reduced acetic acid-induced ulcer at the oral dose of 500 mg/kg for 12 days. In this study, we have found that the water extract from Scutellaria baicalensis had significant improvement in acute gastritis and ulcer at the dose of 300, 500 mg/kg and in chronic gastritis and ulcer at the dose of 500 mg/kg. Also we evaluated the antibacterial activity against Helicobacter pylori treated with Scutellaria baicalensis. Scutellaria baicalensis had a equivalent antibacterial activity with ampicilin against H. pylori at the dose of $100\;{\mu}/ml$. In histological examination, the water extract of Scutellaria baicalensis drastically restored gastric damages induced by HCl ethanol solution, pylorus- ligature and acetic acid. Therefore, we may use the water extract from Scutellaria baicalensis as antigastritic and antiulcerative agent for the purpose of the improvement or treatment of gastritis and gastric ulcer.
Sophorae Radix, the dried roots of Sophora flavescens Aiton (Leguminosae), has been used in oriental traditional medicine for treatment of skin and mucosal ulcers, sores, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, diarrhea, inflammation and arrhythmia. Present study was carried out for the gastroprotective effect of trifolirhizin from Sophora flavescens. This reports were evaluated antibacterial activity against Helicobacter pylori and HCl ethanol-induced gastric lesion in rats and showed the significant effectiveness. In pylorus ligated rats, the treatments of trifolirhizin showed decrease in the volume of gastric secretion and acid output. Also we evaluated the antibacterial activity against H. pylori treated with methanol extract and trifolirhizin from Sophora flavescens had a equivalent antibacterial activity with ampicillin against H. pylori at the dose of $100{\mu}g/mL$. It may be regarded that the antigastritic effects and antibacterial activity of trifolirhizin from Sophora flavescens are originated from reduction of total acid output identified by gastric secretion reduce, free radical scavenging effects and the antibacterial activity against H. pylori.
An experimental study was done to investigate the spontaneous movements to the isolated ileum with liquid extracts of Samchulgunbitang. Then the action of gastric ulcer, gastric-juice secretion, the free acidity, total acidity, pepsin output, the transport ability in the intestine, analgesic effect and sleeping time were measured. The following results were obtained; 1. As to the spontaneous movements in the isolated ileum, the effect of contraction against suppression was recognized. 2. The effects of contraction against suppression induced by acetylcholine chloride and barium chloride were recognized on the gastric funds strip significantly. 3. The preventive effect of Samchulgunbitang on the pylorus-lightedulcer in rat was recognized significantly. 4. The anti-ulcer effect of Samchulgunbitang was not recognized on the gastric ulcer caused by indomethacin. 5. The effects of decreasing on the secretion gastric juice, the free acidity, total acidity and pepsin output of Samchulgunbitang were recognized significantly. 6. The transport rate in the small intestine of Samchulgunbitang was decreased. 7. The transport rate in the large intestine of Samchulgunbitang was increased. 8. The analgesic effect of Samchulgunbitang caused by acetic acid was recognized significantly. 9. The sleeping time caused by pentobarbital-Na of Samchulgunbitang was prolonged significantly. According to the results, it is considered that the Samchulgunbitang has effects of gastric ulcer, chronic gastritis, hyper-acidity, gastroptosis such as abdominal discomfort, gastric acid, indigestion and anorexia.
The extracts of Yukgunja-tang which has been used in some of gastroin testinal disorders were examined for secretion of gastric juice and movement of isolated stomach of rabbit. Experiments were performed with the dried extract of Yukgunja-tang (sample I) and the dried extract compound made of each drug of Yukgunja-tang (sample II). The secretion of gastric juice at the doses of 25.0 and 50.0mg/kg p.o. of sample I showed the decreases of 34.3 and 43.3%, respectively, as compared with control group, whereas the secretion at a dose of 76.8g/kg of sample II showed 43.1%. In gastric acid secretion, sample I showed 50.0% decrease at a dose of 50.0mg/kg and sample II showed 46.2% decrease at a dose of 76.8mg/kg. In pepsin output sample I showed 17.8 and 23.4% decreases at a dose of 25.0 and 50.0mg/kg, respectively, whereas sample II showed 22.5% decrease at a dose of 76.8mg/kg. The isolated stomach of rabbit showed dose-responsive contraction by addition of sample I, however the contraction was not observed by sample II.
