  • Nowadays, the issue of solar cell durability in local weather and environment is a crucial issue. Above all, surface corrosion on solar cell multilayers is a major factor that determines the durability of commercial solar cells; corrosive chemical interactions between air, humidity and chemical species and solar cell multilayers can unfavorably affect the durability. Here, we study microscopic and spectroscopic surface techniques to investigate the corrosive interaction on the antireflective layers of solar cell multilayers under various conditions such as acid, base, constant temperature and humidity. Surface morphology and adhesion force were characterized with atomic force microscopy before and after chemical treatment. Chemical composition, and transmittance factors were studied with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, respectively. Based on these studies, we suggest the dominant factors in the corrosive chemical processes, and their influences on the structural, compositional, and optical properties of the antireflective layers.

  • The activated carbon "C" was obtained by carbonization followed by activation with steam at 40% of burn-off. Oxidized carbons C-N, C-P and C-H were obtained by oxidizing the activated carbon C with concentrated nitric acid, ammonium peroxysulfate and hydrogen peroxide, respectively. The textural properties of the carbons were determined from nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. The acidic surface functional groups were determined by pH titration, base neutralization capacity and electrophoretic mobility measurements. The cation exchange capacities of un-oxidized and oxidized carbons were determined by the removal of Cu(II) and Ni(II) from their aqueous solutions. The surface area and the total pore volume decreased but the pore radius increased by the treatment of activated carbon with oxidizing agents. These changes were more pronounced in case of oxidation with $HNO_3$. The surface pH of un-oxidized carbon was basic whereas those of the oxidized derivative were acidic. The removal of Cu(II) and Ni(II) was pH dependent and the maximum removal of the both ions was obtained at pH of 5-6. Cu(II) was more adsorbed, a phenomenon which was ascribed to its particular electronic configuration.

  • This study investigated the extraction and stripping performance of PIMs consisting of PVC and Aliquat 336. Extraction and stripping of three representative heavy metals - namely $Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$ - by the synthesized membranes were evaluated as a function of sodium chloride concentration and under different stripping solutions (0.01 M $HNO_3$, Milli-Q water, 0.01 M HCl and 0.01 M NaOH), respectively. Results reported here indicate that the formation of negatively charged metal chloride complex species was responsible for the extraction of the target metal to PIMs. Experimental results and thermodynamic modeling of the speciation of chloro metal complexes further confirm that the extraction selectivity between $Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ can be controlled by regulating the chloride concentration of the feed solution. An acidic solution without any chloride was the most effective stripping solution, followed by Milli-Q water, and a diluted hydrochloric acid solution. On the other hand, the stripping of metals from PIMs did not occur when a basic stripping solution was used.

  • We report the preparation of nanocrystalline cobalt ferrite, $CoFe_2O_4$, particles using recycled $Co_3O_4$ and their surface coating with silica using micro emulsion method. Firstly, the $Co_3O_4$ powders were separated from waste cemented carbide with acid-base chemical treatment. The cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with the size 10 nm are prepared by thermal decomposition method using recycled $Co_3O_4$. $SiO_2$ was coated onto the $CoFe_2O_4$ particles by the micro-emulsion method. The $SiO_2$-coated $CoFe_2O_4$ particles were studied their physical properties and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution-transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis and CIE Lab value.

  • Sedimentation and pH neutralization has been investigated as preteatment of acid contaminate water. The settling and neutralizing process derive more effective degradation efficiency as the pre-treatment process before the removal process of adsorption, volatile, biodegradation, or oxidation. Settling velocity, uniformity coefficient, coefficient of curvature, and grain size index can define in the sedimentation process for characteristics of the soil. The stainless steel sieve has been used to separate each particle size of the dry soil by assembling in order of 4, 10, 20, 40, 80, 100, and 200 mesh sizes. The soil from Gamcheon Port in Busan drops upper side of the sieve and shakes back and forth to separate each different size of the particle. The 1L of Imhoff cone and 200 mL of the mass cylinder were used as settling tanks to calculate settling velocity. Stokes' equation was used to figure out the average density of dry soil with a value from settling velocity. In the results, the average particle density and lowest settling velocity were 1.93 g/cm3 and 0.11 cm/s, respectively. These values can detect the range of settling points of sediment to prevent chemical accidents. In pH neutralization, the initial pH of 2, 3, 4, and 5 of nitric acid and sulfuric acid are used as an acid solution; 0.1, 0.01, and 0.001 M of sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide are used as a base solution. The main goal of this experiment is to figure out the volume percentage of the acid solution becomes pH 7. The concentration of 0.001 M of base solution exceeds all the conditions, 0.01 M exceeds partially, and 0.1 M does not exceed 5 v/v% except pH 2. Calcium hydroxide present less volume than sodium hydroxide at pH neutralization both sulfuric and nitric acid.

  • This study was designed to compare the effects of treatment using chitosan membrane $(Nanogide-C^{(R)})$ resorbable barrier with control treated by polylactic acid/polylacticglycolic acid membrane(PLA/PLGA membrane, $Biomesh^{(R)}$). 44 furcation defecs from 44 patients with class 2 furcation degree were used for this study, 22 sites of them were treated by chitosan membrane as experimental group and 22 site were treated by PLA/PLGA membrane as control group. Clinical parameters including probing depth, gingival recession, attachment level and radiographic examination were evlauated at base line, 1 month, 2 month and 3 month. after surgery. Statistical test used to analyze these data included paired t-test, one way ANOVA. The results are as follows : 1. Probing depth was significanlly decreased in the two group and there were significant differences between groups(p<0.05). 2. Gingival recession was not significanlly increased in the two group and there were no significant differences between groups(p<0.05). 3. Loss of attachment was statistically decreased in the two group and there were no significant differences between groups(p<0.05). 4. Horizontal bone level was significanlly increased in the two group and there were significant differences between groups(p<0.05). On the basis of these results, chitoans resorbable membrane has similar potential to PLA/PLGA membrane in GTR for furcation defect.

  • After selecting five types of adhesive epoxy resin for metallic cultural assets such as $Araldite^{(R)}$ rapid type, $Devcon^{(R)}$, $Araldite^{(R)}$ SV427+HV427, $CDK^{(R)}$520, $Araldite^{(R)}$ AW106+HV953 which had already been studied, this paper approached more closely the problem of yellowing and the signal of aging with time passing by connecting the problems with the safety of metallic cultural assets. The change of physical properties according to the change of state of epoxy adhesives was investigated through the change of flexural strength and the change of surface hardness by artificially providing the possible environmental change factors such as ultra-violet ray, and acid base, and how the epoxy chemically changes in its ingredients by the environment was analyzed through FT-IR. As a result of the experiment, for the most part of adhesives brought about the physical change of flexural strength, the change of surface hardness, and the chemical change of chemical ingredients as the product of alcohol, which were respectively different according to the time of ultraviolet irradiation, and acid base change. Under most of the conditions, SV427+HV427 and $CDK^{(R)}$520 were fairly stabilized under each condition of weatherability, but it seems that they should be refrained from being applied in case that the area to restore is thin and wide because the degree of flexural strength of themselves is low. Also, it is found that the preservation environment is very important not only for artifacts but also for the preservation of resins sused for preservation treatment.

  • Tidal volume by sevoflurane in small amounts is stable due to the increase in the breathing rate. But alveolus ventilation decreases due to sevoflurane as the degree of sedation increases; this ultimately causes $PaCO_2$ to rise. The occurrence of suppression of breath increases the risk of severe hypoxia and hypercapnia in deeply sedated patients with disabilities. Sevoflurane inhalation anesthesia has a number of risks and may have unexpected problems with hemodynamic changes depending on the underlying state of the body. This study was conducted to examine the stability of internal acid-base system caused by respiratory depression occurring when patients with disabilities are induced by sevoflurane. Anesthetic induction was carried out by placing a mask on top of the patient's face and through voluntary breathing with 4 vol% of sevoflurane, 4 L/min of nitrous oxide, and 4 L/min of oxygen. After the patient's loss of consciousness and muscle relaxation, IV line was inserted by an expert and intravenous blood gas was analyzed by extracting blood from vein. In a deeply sedated state, the average amount of pH of the entire patients was measured as $7.36{\pm}0.06$. The average amount of $PvCO_2$ of the entire patients was measured as $48.8{\pm}8.50mmHg$. The average amount of $HCO_3{^-}$ of the entire patients was measured as $27.2{\pm}3.0mmol/L$. In conclusion, in dental treatment of patients with disabilities, the internal acid base response to inhalation sedation using sevoflurane is relatively stable.

  • The deactivated catalyzed diesel particulate filter-trap (DPF) was remanufactured by ultrasonic wave treatment with various prepared solutions, followed by active component re-impregnation, and the emission control performance and surface properties of remanufactured DPF were studied at various remanufacturing conditions. The proper ultrasonic wave cleaning time at various prepared solutions and optimal re-impregnation amounts of active component for the best emission control performance of DPF were investigated and its performance tests were also carried out with various temperatures for the conversions of CO, THC (total hydrocarbon) and PM (particulate matter) by catalytic reaction test unit using bypass gas from the diesel engine dynamo system. It was found that the emission control performance of DPF remanufactured with the high-temperature air washing, ultrasonic wave cleaning at acid/base solutions and active component re-impregnation method was recovered to 95% level of its activity compared to that of the fresh DPF, which was caused by removing the deactivating materials from the surface of the DPF, through the analyses of performance test and their surface characterization by Optical microscope, EDX, ICP, TGA, and porosimeter.
