  • The accident at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in March 2011, caused by an earthquake and a subsequent tsunami, resulted in a failure of the power systems that are needed to cool the reactors at the plant. The accident progression in the absence of heat removal systems caused Units 1-3 to undergo fuel melting. Containment pressurization and hydrogen explosions ultimately resulted in the escape of radioactivity from reactor containments into the atmosphere and ocean. Problems in containment venting operation, leakage from primary containment boundary to the reactor building, improper functioning of standby gas treatment system (SGTS), unmitigated hydrogen accumulation in the reactor building were identified as some of the reasons those added-up in the severity of the accident. The Fukushima accident not only initiated worldwide demand for installation of adequate control and mitigation measures to minimize the potential source term to the environment but also advocated assessment of the existing mitigation systems performance behavior under a wide range of postulated accident scenarios. The uncertainty in estimating the released fraction of the radionuclides due to the Fukushima accident also underlined the need for comprehensive understanding of fission product behavior as a function of the thermal hydraulic conditions and the type of gaseous, aqueous, and solid materials available for interaction, e.g., gas components, decontamination paint, aerosols, and water pools. In the light of the Fukushima accident, additional experimental needs identified for hydrogen and fission product issues need to be investigated in an integrated and optimized way. Additionally, as more and more passive safety systems, such as passive autocatalytic recombiners and filtered containment venting systems are being retrofitted in current reactors and also planned for future reactors, identified hydrogen and fission product issues will need to be coupled with the operation of passive safety systems in phenomena oriented and coupled effects experiments. In the present paper, potential hydrogen and fission product issues raised by the Fukushima accident are discussed. The discussion focuses on hydrogen and fission product behavior inside nuclear power plant containments under severe accident conditions. The relevant experimental investigations conducted in the technical scale containment THAI (thermal hydraulics, hydrogen, aerosols, and iodine) test facility (9.2 m high, 3.2 m in diameter, and $60m^3$ volume) are discussed in the light of the Fukushima accident.

  • Purpose: This study intends to develop a nonlinear cyclic plasticity damage model in the framework of finite element formulation, which is capable of taking large deformation effects into account, in order to accurately predict the hysteretic behavior of stainless steel structures. Method: The new cyclic constitutive equations that utilize the combined isotropic-kinematic hardening rule for plastic deformation is incorporated into the damage mechanic model in conjunction with the large strain formulation. The damage growth law is based on the experimental observations that the evolution of microvoids yields nonlinear damage accumulation with plastic deformation. The damage model parameters and the procedure for their identification are presented. Results and Conclusion: The proposed nonlinear damage model has been verified by simulating uniaxial strain-controlled monotonic and cyclic loading tests, and successfully applied to a thin-walled stainless steel pipe subjected to constant and alternating strain-controlled cyclic loadings.

  • There are continuous and tremendous attempts to apply various sensor systems and ICTs into the dairy science for data accumulation and improvement of dairy productivity. However, these only concerns the fields which directly affect to the dairy productivity such as the number of individuals and the milk production amount, while researches on the physiology aspects of dairy cows are not enough which are fundamentally involved in the dairy productivity. This paper proposes the basic approach for extraction of daily behavior pattern from hourly behavioral data of dairy cows to identify the health status and stress. Total four clusters were grouped by k-means clustering and the reasonability was proved by visualization of the data in each groups and the representatives of each groups. We hope that provided results should lead to the further researches on catching abnormalities and disease signs of dairy cows.

  • Switching behaviour of the ferroelectric thin film and device characteristics of the MFSFET(Metal-Ferroelectric-Semiconductor FET) are simulated with taking into account the accumulation of oxygen vacancies near interface between the ferroelectric thin film and the bottom electrode caused by the progress of fatigue. In our switching model, relative switched charge is 0.74 nC before fatigue, but after the progress of fatigue it reduces to 0.15 nC with the generation of oxygen vacancies. It indicates that the generation of oxygen vacancies strongly suppresses polarization reversal. $C-V_G\;and\;I_D-V_G$ curves in our MFSFET device model exhibit the memory window of 2 V and show the accumulation, the depletion and the inversion regions in capacitance characteristic clearly. The difference of saturation drain current of the device before fatigue in shown by the dual threshold voltages in $I_D-V_G$ curve as 6nA/$cm^2$ and decreases as much as 50% after fatigue. Decrease of the difference of saturation drain currents by fatigue implies that the accumulation of oxygen vacancies with the fatigue should be avoided in the device application. Our simulation model is expected to play an important role in estimation of the behavior of MFSFET device with various ferroelectric thin films.

  • Liposome as a carrier of topotecan (TPT), a promising anticancer drug, has been reported in attempt to improve the stability and antitumor activity of TPT. However, the biodistr ibution pattern of TPT liposome in vivo and PEG-modified liposome containing TPT have not been studied systemically. In this paper, the in vitro stability and in vivo biodistribution behavior of several liposomes containing TPT with different lipid compositions and PEG-modification were studied. Compared with the 'fluid' liposome (S-Lip) composed of soybean phosphatidylcholine (SPC), the 'solid' liposome (H-Lip) composed of hydrogenated soybean phosphatidylcholine HSPC decreased the leaking efficiency of TPT from liposome and enhanced the stability of liposome in fetal bovine serum (FBS) or human blood plasma (HBP). The results of biodistribution studies in S$_{180}$ tumor-bearing mice showed that liposomal encapsulation increased the concentrations of total TPT and the ratio of lactone form in plasma. Compared with free TPT, S-Lip and H-Lip resulted in 5- and 19- fold increase in the area under the curve (AUC$_{0\rightarrow\propto}$), respectively. PEG- modified H-Lip (H-PEG) showed 3.7-fold increase in AUC$_{0\rightarrow\propto}$ compared with H-Lip, but there was no significant increase in t$_{1/2}$ and AUC$_{0\rightarrow\propto}$ for PEG-modified S-Lip (S-PEG) compared with S-Lip. Moreover, the liposomal encapsulation changed the biodistribution behavior, and H-Lip and H-PEG dramatically increased the accumulation of TPT in tumor, and the relative tumor uptake ratios were 3.4 and 4.3 compared with free drug, respectively. There was also a marked increase in the distribution of TPT in lung when the drug was encapsulated into H-Lip and H-PEG. Moreover, H-PEG decreased the accumulation of TPT in bore marrow compared with unmodified H-Lip. All these results indicated that the membrane fluidity of liposome has an important effect on in vitro stability and in vivo biodistribution pattern of liposomes containing TPT, and PEG-modified 'solid' liposome may be an efficient carrier of TPT.

  • The influence of phenolsulfunate concentrations on electroplating characteristics and electrochemical behaviors was investigated with a viewpoint of electrolyte aging using the circulation cell and potentiostate And comparison of tinplate coating appearance such as glossiness and Image clarify has been also studied with varying of phenolsulfonic acid (PSA) solutions. As the aging of electrolyte proceeded, the limiting current density was moved to a lower current density region by the limitation of mass transfer, and higher phenolsulfunate concentrations resulted in the narrower optimum current density range and deterioration of coating surface of tinplates. The difference of the limiting current density was not remarkable with increasing electrolyte temperature. Thus the electrolyte aging was attributed to the limitation of thermally-activated process such as mass transfer of reducible ions. It has also been considered that the accumulation of phenolsulfonate suppressed normal electrotinning reaction by reducing the mobility of stannous ions, taking into account of the smaller effect of electrolyte aging. Experiments showed similar polarization behavior between the electrolyte of high phenolsufonate solution and the aged one, which comes to conclude that the accumulation of phenolsulfonate is one of the major causes of electrolyte aging.

  • Female university students generally have a lower intake of nutrition compared to other age groups due to their adverse interests in their appearance. Drinking, smoking, too much weight control, accumulation of psychological and physical stress are causes of inadequate diet. The result is deterioration of hair health. Establishment of good diet and hair care is the foundation of a healthy hair in adulthood. For this reason, there is a great need for a healthy hair care. The data from a questionnaire survey was analyzed with 800 female undergraduate students responding. Seventeen universities were included in the study, 8 of which were from Seoul, 6 from other large cities and 3 from smaller towns. The objective of this study is to investigate the correlations of these factors and to provide preliminary data for developing an effective hair care education program. Results include the following: 1. Knowledge score of hair care based on general characteristics were higher for students in larger cites compare to small cites or regions. Also, students in higher academic year, more allowance, interest in their apparence and family income showed higher knowledge in this field. These factors had meaningful effect on the statistics of this study. 2. Attitude score towards hair care based on general characteristics were higher for students in larger cites compare to small cites or regions. Also, students in higher academic year, more allowance, interest in their apparence and family income showed higher knowledge in this field. These factors had meaningful effect on the statistics of this study. 3. Behavior score towards hair care was higher for students with greater family income, allowance, interest in appearance. These factors had meaningful effect on the statistics of this study. 4. The correlation study between knowledge, attitude and behavior showed that higher the knowledge and attitude, better the behavior. 5. The analysis of factors effecting hair care behavior showed that interest in health, acknowledgement of current hair condition, total family income were a viable factor in predicting hair care behavior. The predictability of regression model is 38.9 %($R^2$) Therefore, in order to maximize the hair care behavior, consistent and systematic study should be earned out to develope an effective education program to improve health interest.

  • Fully reversed push-pull low cycle fatigue tests under strain control of trapezoid cyclic mode have been conducted in air at temperature of 550.deg. C and with frequency of 0.5 cpm on the domestic stainless steel STS 316 after solution treatment for 1 hour at 1100.deg. C. As an experimental equipment for high temperature fatigue tests, an electric servo-hydraulic fatigue machine(Instron model 1350) was used. This paper presents the effects of creep hold time and plastic strain range on push-pull high temperature low cycle fatigue life and fracture behavior. The fracture surfaces were observed by means of the scanning electron microscope. The results are as follows. (1) The fatigue life decreases with increase of the plastic strain range equal hold time and also decreases as the hold time is getting longer. (2) The frequency modified damage function can predict fatigue life by incorporating a variation of Coffin's frequency modified approach into damage function. (3) The ratios of creep damage and fatigue damage can be calculated by using he linear accumulation damage concept and the ratio of creep damage increases as the hold time is getting longer. (4) At the creep hold time of 5 minutes and the strain range of 2.0%, the fracture mode was intergranular fracture and striations were hardly observed. In this case, the intergranular cracking was originated in void type('.gamma.' type) cracking.

  • This study was aimed to investigate the memory enhancing effect of Jeongjihwan against scopolamine-induced amnesia in C57BL/6 mice. To determine the effect of Jeongjihwan on the memory and cognitive function, we have injected scopolamine (1 mg/kg, i.p.) into C57BL/6 mice 30 min before beginning of behavior tests. We have conducted Y-maze, Morris water-maze, passive avoidance and fear conditioning tests to compare learning and memory functions. Scopolamine-induced behavior changes of memory impairment were significantly restored by oral administration of Jeongjihwan (100 or 200 mg/kg/day). To elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying the memory enhancing effect of Jeongjihwan, we have examined the antioxidant defense system and neurotrophic factors. Jeongjihwan treatment attenuated intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species and up-regulated mRNA and protein expression of antioxidant enzymes as assessed by RT-PCR and western blot analysis, respectively. Jeongjihwan also increased protein levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) compared with those in the scopolamine-treated group. Furthermore, as an upstream regulator, the activation of cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) via phosphorylation was assessed by Western blot analysis. Jeongjihwan elevated the phosphorylation of CREB (p-CREB), which seemed to be mediated partly by extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) and protein kinase B/Akt. These findings suggest that Jeongjihwan may have preventive and therapeutic potential in the management of amnesia.

  • In this study, the behavior of external beam-column joints reinforced by plain and deformed bars with non-seismic reinforcement details is investigated and compared. The beam-column joints represented in this study include a benchmark specimen by seismic details in accordance with ACI 318M-11 requirements and four other deficient specimens. The main defects of the non-seismic beam-column joints included use of plain bar, absence of transverse steel hoops, and the anchorage condition of longitudinal reinforcements. The experimental results indicate that using of plain bars in non-seismic beam-column joints has significantly affected the failure modes. The main failure mode of the non-seismic beam-column joints reinforced by deformed bars was the accumulation of shear cracks in the joint region, while the failure mode of the non-seismic beam-column joints reinforced by plain bars was deep cracks at the joint face and intersection of beam and column and there was only miner diagonal shear cracking at the joint region. In the other way, use of plain bars for reinforcing concrete can cause the behavior of the substructure to be controlled by slip of the beam longitudinal bars. The experimental results show that the ductility of non-seismic beam-column joints reinforced by plain bars has not decreased compared to the beam-column joints reinforced by deformed bars due to lack of mechanical interlock between plain bars and concrete. Also it can be seen a little increase in ductility of substructure due to existence of hooks at the end of the development length of the bars.
