  • This paper compares the intra-day patterns on the NYSE and AMEX of volatility, trading volume and bid-ask spreads for European and Japanese dually-listed stocks with American stocks of comparable average trading volume and volatility. It is shown that the intra-day patterns for these stocks are remarkably similar even though public information flows differ markedly across these stocks during the trading day. In the early morning, all stocks have higher volatility than later in the day, but this phenomenon is most pronounced for Japanese stocks and affects American stocks the least. We argue that these patterns are consistent with markets reacting to the overnight accumulation of public information but are inconsistent with the view that early morning volatility can be attributed to monopolistic specialist behavior.

  • The Fatigue characteristics of 8-harness satin woven CFRP composites with a circular hole are experimentally investigated under constant amplitude tension-tension loading. It is found in this study that the fatigue damage accumulation behavior is very random and history-independent, and the fatigue cumulative damage is linearly related with the mean number of cycles to a specified damage state. From these results, it is known that the fatigue characteristics of CFRP composites satisfy the basic assumptions of Markov chain theory and the parameter of Markov chain model can be determined only by mean and variance of fatigue lives. The predicted distribution of the fatigue cumulative damage using Markov chain model shows a good agreement with the test results. For the fatigue life distribution, Markov chain model makes similar accuracy to 2-parameter Weibull distribution function.

  • Switching behaviour of the ferroelectric thin film and device characteristics of the MFSFET (Metal-Ferroelectric-Semiconductor FET) are simulated with taking into account the accumulation of oxygen vacancies near interface between the ferroelectric thin film and the bottom electrode caused by the progress of fatigue. We show net switching current decreases due fatigue in the switching model. It indicates that oxygen vacancy strongly suppresses polarization reversal. The difference of saturation drain current of the device before fatigue is shown by the dual threshold voltages in I$_{D}$-V$_{D}$ curve as 6㎃/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and decreases as much as 50% after fatigue. Our simulation model is expected to play an important role in estimation of the behavior of MFSFET device with various ferroelectric thin films.lms.

  • As important factors determining human sensorial comfort, liquid moisture management and surface properties of heat resistant workwear materials were examined. To figure out liquid moisture management properties of the test materials, absorption capacity, rate of absorption, and evaporation properties were assessed. A modified GATS(Gravimetric Absorbency Testing System) was used to measure the liquid moisture accumulation associated with the wicking of liquid moisture from sweating skin. The GATS procedure measures demand wettability of materials to take up liquid in a direction perpendicular to the fabric surface and it was modified to incorporate a special test cell and cover to assess absorption behavior in the presence of evaporation. Fabric stiffness, smoothness, number and the length of surface fibers, and an estimate of the contact area between the skin and fabric surface were measured to characterize the mechanical and surface properties of the test materials. Also an estimate of the force with which a fabric clings to moist skin was made using as wet-cling index.

  • In this study, the fatigue test at room temperature and residual resistivity measurement test at 12K were carried out, respectively, using a 0 strand Cu-Ni/NbTi/Cu composite cable, in order to investigate how the annealing treatment effects on critical properties due to fatigue damage. Through a fatigue test of a 0 strand Cu-Ni/NbTi/Cu composite cables, a conventional S-N curve was obtained even though there existed a possibility of fretting among strands. From the resistivity measurement of a NbTi strand after fatigue tests, it was found that the RRR for annealed cables was 3 times more than that for as-received one, but with increase of the repeated number the RRR decreased which was resulted from the accumulation of damage such as lattice defects dislocation within the Cu stabilizer.

  • In this study, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) using a copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) material as an active layer and SiO2 as a gate insulator were fabricated with varying active layer thicknesses and channel lengths. Further, using a thermal evaporation method in a high-vacuum system, we fabricated a CuPc FET device of the top-contact type and used Au materials for the source and drain electrodes. In order to discuss the channel formation and FET characteristics, we observed the typical current-voltage characteristics and calculated the threshold voltage of the CuPc FET device. We also found that the capacitance reached approximately 97 pF at a negative applied voltage and increased upon the accumulation of carriers at the interface of the metal and the CuPc material. We observed the typical behavior of a FET when used as an n-channel FET. Moreover, we calculated the threshold voltage to be about 15-20 V at VDS = -80 V.

  • The fretting wear behavior of the contact between Zircaloy-4 tube and Inconel 600, which are used as the fuel rod cladding and grid, respectively, in PWR nuclear power plants was investigated in air. In the study, number of cycles, slip amplitude and normal load were selected as the main factors of fretting wear. The results indicated that wear increased with load, slip amplitude and number of cycles but was affected mainly by the slip amplitude. SEM micrographs revealed the characteristics of fretting wear features on the surface of the specimens such as stick, partial slip and gross slip which depended on the slip amplitude. It was found that fretting wear was caused by the crack generation along the stick-slip boundaries due to the accumulation of plastic flow at small slip amplitudes and by abrasive wear in the entire contact area at high slip amplitudes.

  • The purpose of this paper is to compare the characteristics between group that has only one credit card and group that has multiple credit cards in each stage of purchase decision making based on the literature in consumer behavior. Results indicated that (1) The number of credit cards that consumers has was affected by internal factor and reference factor, (2) depending on the number of credit cards, usage frequency, amount, and duration were differently showed and (3) inertia, point accumulation, and convenience were founded as determinants of using credit cards. Finally, theoretical and managerial implications of these findings are discussed.

  • For the accumulation of a fundamental knowledge about the behavior of glass solder during the joining of ceramics, the wettability of solder on silicon nitride have been measured by sessile drop method. $SiO_2-MgO-Al_2O_3$ g1ass solder and oxynitride glass solders were selected as examples while silicon nitride which were used as substrates. Contact angle of solder on silicon nitride didn't decrease with time at high nitrogen content in the solder, but low nitrogen content in solders have the time-dependent property. Reason which contact angle of low nitrogen content in solders decrease on silicon nitride was that diffusion of nitrogen take place between solder and silicon nitride.

  • Taking the superficial temperature increment as the major fatigue damage indicator, the infrared thermography was used to predict fatigue parameters (fatigue strength and S-N curve) of welded joints subjected to fatigue loading with a high mean stress, showing good predictions. The fatigue damage status, related to safety evaluation, was tightly correlated with the temperature field evolution of the hot-spot zone on the specimen surface. An energetic damage model, based on the energy accumulation, was developed to evaluate the residual fatigue life of the welded specimens undergoing cyclic loading, and a good agreement was presented. It is concluded that the infrared thermography can not only well predict the fatigue behavior of welded joints, but also can play an important role in health detection of structures subjected to mechanical loading.
