Most deciduous trees in temperate zone are dormant during the winter to overcome cold and dry environment. Dormancy of deciduous fruit trees is usually separated into a period of rest by physiological conditions and a period of quiescence by unfavorable environmental conditions. Inconsistent and fewer budburst in pear orchards has been reported recently in South Korea and Japan and the insufficient chilling due to warmer winters is suspected to play a role. An accurate prediction of the flowering time under the climate change scenarios may be critical to the planning of adaptation strategy for the pear industry in the future. However, existing methods for the prediction of budburst depend on the spring temperature, neglecting potential effects of warmer winters on the rest release and subsequent budburst. We adapted a dormancy clock model which uses daily temperature data to calculate the thermal time for simulating winter phenology of deciduous trees and tested the feasibility of this model in predicting budburst and flowering of Niitaka pear, one of the favorite cultivars in Korea. In order to derive the model parameter values suitable for Niitaka, the mean time for the rest release was estimated by observing budburst of field collected twigs in a controlled environment. The thermal time (in chill-days) was calculated and accumulated by a predefined temperature range from fall harvest until the chilling requirement (maximum accumulated chill-days in a negative number) is met. The chilling requirement is then offset by anti-chill days (in positive numbers) until the accumulated chill-days become null, which is assumed to be the budburst date. Calculations were repeated with arbitrary threshold temperatures from $4^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$ (at an interval of 0.1), and a set of threshold temperature and chilling requirement was selected when the estimated budburst date coincides with the field observation. A heating requirement (in accumulation of anti-chill days since budburst) for flowering was also determined from an experiment based on historical observations. The dormancy clock model optimized with the selected parameter values was used to predict flowering of Niitaka pear grown in Suwon for the recent 9 years. The predicted dates for full bloom were within the range of the observed dates with 1.9 days of root mean square error.

The purpose of this study is to understand meteorological and climatological factors that have influence on the garlic product in Seosan and Taean, and to analyze the economic value according to the use of climatical information data for garlic farmers. The climatological characteristics and trends in this area are analyzed using the meteorological data at the Seosan local meteorological agency from 1984 to 2013, the national statistical data for the product of garlic from 1989 to 2013, and the scenario data for climate change (RCP 4.5 and 8.5) for the period from 2001 to 2100. The results are as follows. First, the condition of lower temperature for garlic growth in winter season is satisfied with the mean air temperature. The wind speed are lower and stronger in Seosan and Taean than other garlic area. The suitable condition for the growth of northern type of garlic shows the decreasing trend in the accumulated precipitation in May. However, the area of growing the northern type garlic in the future is likely diminished because mean air temperature, accumulated precipitation, and mean wind speed are strong in the harvest time of garlic. Second, the seedtime of the northern and southern type of garlic using climate change scenarios (RCP 4.5, 8.5) in Seosan and Taean is getting late as time passes. and the harvest time gets faster, which indicates s that the period of garlic cultivation becomes shorter from 50 days to around 90 in the next 100 years. Third, the beginning days of white rot and delia platura of garlic are estimated by applying to the meteorological algorithm using mean air temperature and soil humidity. Especially, the beginning day of white rot garlic is shown to be faster according to the scenarios of RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. Fourth, the product of garlic (kg/10a) shows a high correlation with the minimum air temperature of a wintering time, the mean wind speed of a wintering time, the accumulated precipitation of a corpulent time, and the mean relative humidity of corpulent time of garlic. On the other hand, the analysis of garlic product when using the meteorological information data in cultivating garlic in Seosan and Taean reveals that the economic value increases up to 9% in total.
A liquid metal reactor (LMR) operated at high temperatures is subjected to both cyclic mechanical loading and thermal loading; thus, creep-fatigue is a major concern to be addressed with regard to maintaining structural integrity. The Korea Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor (KALIMER), which has a normal operating temperature of $545^{\circ}C$ and a total service life time of 60 years, is composed of various cylindrical structures, such as the reactor vessel and the reactor baffle. This study focuses on the creepfatigue crack initiation for a cylindrical Y-junction structure made of 316 stainless steel (SS), which is subjected to cyclic axial tensile loading and thermal loading at a high-temperature hold time of $545^{\circ}C$. The evaluation of the considered creep-fatigue crack initiation was carried out utilizing the ${\sigma}_d$ approach of the RCC-MR A16 guide, which is the high-temperature defect assessment procedure. This procedure is based on the total accumulated strain during the service time. To confirm the evaluated result, a high-temperature creep-fatigue structural test was performed. The test model had a circumferential through wall defect at the center of the model. The defect front of the test model was investigated after the $100^{th}$ cycle of the testing by utilizing a metallurgical inspection technique with an optical microscope, after which the test result was compared with the evaluation result. This study shows how creep-fatigue crack initiation for a high-temperature structure can be predicted with conservatism per the RCC-MR A16 guide.
Extreme heavy snowfall episodes have been investigated in case of accumulated snowfall amount larger than 50 cm during the past ten years, in order to understand the association of low-level stability with heavy snowfall in the Yeongdong region. In general, the selected 4 events have similar synoptic setting such as the Siberian High extended to East Sea along with the Low passing by the southern Korean Peninsula, eventually inducing easterly in the Yeongdong region. Specifically moist-adiabatically neutral layer has been observed during the heavy snowfall period, which was easily identified using vertical profiles of equivalent potential temperature observed at Sokcho, whereas convective unstable layer has been formed over the East sea due to relatively warm sea surface temperature (SST) about $8{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ and lower temperature around 1~2 km above the surface, obtained from RDAPS. Difference of equivalent potential temperature between 850 hPa and surface as well as difference between air and sea temperatures altogether gradually increased before the snowfall period. Instability-induced moisture supply to the atmosphere from the East sea, being cooled and saturated by the upper cold surge, would make low-level ice cloud, and eventually move inland by the easterly flow. Heavy snowfall will be enhanced in association with low-level convergence by surface friction and upslope wind against Taebaek mountains. This study emphasizes the importance of low level stability in the Yeongdong region using the radiosonde sounding and RDAPS data, which should quantitatively be examined through numerical model as well as heat and moisture supply from the ocean.
The cutaneous microcirculation plays a role in various physiological processes and pathological conditions. Two non-invasive methods were used in this study to obtain reference values for cutaneous microcirculation in intact male beagles. Twenty intact male beagles were used. The experimental environments were standardized. Laser Doppler flowmetry was used to measure cutaneous blood flow, and an infrared thermometer was used to measure cutaneous temperature. The blood flow and temperature were measured from the right side of the subjects at 20 cutaneous sites. Based on the laser Doppler flowmetry, the region with the highest blood flow was the periocular region that with the lowest was the forelimb foot pad. In addition, the standard deviation of the chest wall was the highest while that of the periocular region was the lowest. For skin temperature, the inguinal region had the highest mean skin temperature and the forelimb foot pad had the lowest. The correlation coefficient between the two methods was 0.72. Similar to a previous study, the values derived from repeated measurements at the 20 regions are reproducible and can contribute to research. Compared to the results of a previous study, the temperatures of the two smallest skin regions were the same; however, no specific trend was observed. The correlation coefficient between the two methods was significantly comparable, and this good correlation can reduce their limitations and variables complementarily. In addition to possible use in human studies, accumulated resources on measurements of skin blood flow in the future will potentiate its use in the veterinary medicine field.
Solar radiation data measured by pyranometers is of fundamental use in various fields. In the field of atmospheric optics, the measurement of solar energy must be precise, and the equipment needs to be maintained frequently. However, there seem to be many errors with the existing type of pyranometer, which is an element of the solar-energy observation apparatus. In particular, the error caused by the thermal dome effect occurs because of the thermal offset generated from a temperature difference between outer dome and inner casing. To resolve the thermal dome effect, intensive observation was conducted using the method and instrument designed by Ji and Tsay. The characteristics of the observed global solar radiation were analyzed by classifying the observation period into clear, cloudy, and rainy cases. For the clear-weather case, the temperature difference between the pyranometer's case and dome was highest, and the thermal dome effect was $0.88MJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$. Meanwhile, the thermal dome effect in the cloudy case was $0.69MJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$, because the reduced global solar radiation thus reduced the temperature difference between case and dome. In addition, the rainy case had the smallest temperature difference of $0.21MJ\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$. The quantification of this thermal dome effect with respect to the daily accumulated global solar radiation gives calculated errors in the cloudy, rainy, and clear cases of 6.53%, 6.38%, and 5.41% respectively.

This study was conducted to assess the impact of growing condition variables on alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) productivity. A total of 197 alfalfa yield results were acquired from the alfalfa field trials conducted by the South Korean National Agricultural Cooperative Federation or Rural Development Administration between 1983 and 2008. The corresponding climate and soil data were collected from the database of the Korean Meteorological Administration. Twenty-three growing condition variables were developed as explaining variables for alfalfa forage biomass production. Among them, twelve variables were chosen based on the significance of the partial-correlation coefficients or potential agricultural values. The selected partial correlation coefficients between the variables and alfalfa forage biomass ranged from -0.021 to 0.696. The influence of the selected twelve variables on yearly alfalfa production was summarized into three dominant factors through factor analysis. Along with the accumulated temperature variables, the loading scores of the daily mean temperature higher than 25℃ were over 0.88 in factor 1. The sunshine duration at temperature between 0℃-25℃ was 0.939 in factor 2. Precipitation days were 0.82, which was the greatest in factor 3. Stepwise regression applied with the three dominant factors resulted in the coefficients of factors 1, 2, and 3 for 0.633, 0.485, and 0.115, respectively, and the R-square of the model was 0.602. The environmental conditions limiting alfalfa growth, such as daily temperature higher than 25℃ or daily mean temperature affected annual alfalfa production most substantially among the growing condition variables. Therefore, future cultivar selection should consider the capability of alfalfa to be tolerant to extreme summer weather along with biomass production potential.
Environmental changes can affect life-history traits, such as growth rate and reproduction, and organisms adapt on a given environmental condition to maximize ecological fitness. This study shows the effects of water temperature and dissolved oxygen level on early growth and accumulated damage in fish using a dynamic-state-dependent model. I have hypothesized that the level of foraging activity is related to growth and stress and so the optimal level can maximize reproductive success - ultimately, fitness. The critical temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) is also defined as inducing the maximum growth rate at the level. So, the model predicts the highest growth rate at oxygen saturation and lower growth rate at lower or higher level of DO in water. Lower DO (i.e., hypoxia) causes slower growth rate through higher amount of accumulated stress whereas higher DO (i.e., hyperoxia) induces faster growth rate, but smaller body size. In addition, I show that there is lower impact when considering simple or independent environmental factors on environmental assessment. My findings suggest that multiple environmental factors as physiological ecology approach should be considered to improve impact assessment in environmental changes and a further study is needed to develop advanced assessment tools considering multiple environmental factors.

Phytotron and field experiments were conducted to determine the influence of morphological development and environmental temperature on synthesis, translocation and accumulation behaviour of Fructosan, Monoand Disaccharose in corn cv. Blizzard and fodder sorghum cv. Sioux and Pioneer 931 at Munich technical university. Sorghum and maize plants were grown for 42 days at 4 temperature regimes (30/25, 25/20, 28/18 and 28/8 dog C) and mid-summer sunlight over 13-h days. The obtained results are summarized as follows: 1 Non-structural carbohydrates in maize and sorghum were accumulated mainly as Mono- and Disaccharose. The concentrations of Mono- and Disaccharose were increased markedly after differentiation of growing points and shown at early milk stage the highest contents with 27.8-29.1% and 16.8-20.4% for maizeand sorghums respectively. 2. Non-structural carbohydrates were accumulated mainly in stalk. However, during the late maturity the most of Mono- and Disaccharose were translocated into grain and reserved as starch. The increase of starch was associated with decrease of total non-structural carbohydrates. 3. Fructosan synthesis was not affected by morphological changes and environmental factors, which shows a value of 1.5-2.5% in whole stage of maize and sorghum. 4. Sorghum and maize plants were shown to have a great photosynthetic rates to high temperature. Reserved Mono- and Diaaccharose were, however, declined when temperature exceeded 30 dog C. Under cold stress at l8/8 deg C non-structural carbohydrates were not translocated and also were accumulated in leaves too much that cause to restrict of photosynthesis. 5. Net Energy Lactation (NEL) of sorghum and maize were directly associated with synthetic rates of non-structural carbohydrates, especially Mono- and Disaccharose. The highest values of NEL were found at physiological maturity stage with 6.6- 6.9 MJ and 5.7-6.0 MJ-NEL/kg for maize and sorghum respectively.
The studies reported herein were conducted to investigate the effect of thermal conditions in double-cropping of rice. The accumulated daily mean and minimum air temperatures, for the period of the last 30 years, were examined at the 10 different meteorogical stations which are located in the southern part of Korea. The results obtained could be summarized as follows: 1. The first cropping. a. It seemed to be free from any frost-damage of rice at the seeding stage at Yeosu, Pusan and Cheju. However, it was found that there were some dangers of frost damage for about 30 to 40 day at Iri, Chonju and Kwangju, for 18 to 28 days at Daeku and Ulsan, and for 4 to 14 days at Mokpo and Pohang, respectively. b. The early critical transplanting date seemed to be from middle to late-April in the first cropping. As compared with the ordinary lowland seedlings, the semi-protected and upland ones could be planted 5 and 10 days earlier, respectively. c. The early critical heading date was about late-June and there were some low-temperature damages for 8 to 25 days at young-ear formation stage of rice plant, depending upon location. d. The early critical ripening date (the early critical transplanting date of the 2nd cropping) was from late-July to early-August. It took about 32 to 39 days in ripening. There was a tendency of SS${\fallingdotseq}$SL$15^{\circ}C$ (${\theta}$15) and the minimum of $10^{\circ}C$ (${\theta}$10), the ten locations could be devided into two ripening groups of ${\theta}$15>${\theta}$10 and ${\theta}$15<${\theta}$10. c. The late critical ripening date was around October 9 at Iri, Chonju, Kwangju and Daeku and around October 28 at Mokpo, Yeosu, Pusan and eheju. Three to four days were more required for a complete ripening of rice, as compared with the above dates. d. There was an overlap of about 12 to 42 days between the first and second cropping when early-maturing varieties requiring an accumulated mean air temperature of $1, 550^{\circ}C$, from transplanting to heading, were grown. Therefore, some varieties which could head with an accumulated daily mean air temperature of 1, 000 to $1, 200^{\circ}C$, should be either developed or some new cultural technology be established in order to have a successful double cropping in rice.
