  • Endophytic fungi have the ability to live inside the host plant tissues without causing neither symptoms of diseases/or harm. Opportunistic infections are accountable for majority of the outbreaks, thereby putting a burden on the health system. To investigate and characterize the bioactive compounds for the control of bacteria of clinical importance, extracts from endophytic fungi were isolated from indigenous South African medicinal plants. Extracts from endophytic fungi were isolated from 133 fungal strains and screened against Gram positive and negative bacteria namely Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecium, and E. gallinarum using disk diffusion. Furthermore, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was performed to identify the bioactive compounds. Sixteen out of one hundred and thirty-three (12%) fungi extracts exhibited antibacterial properties against some of the selected bacteria. E. coli was found to be the most susceptible in contrast to E. faecium and E. gallinarum which were the most resistant. The isolate MHE 68, identified as Alternaria sp. displayed the greater spectrum of antibacterial activities by controlling selected clinical bacteria strains including resistant E. faecium and E. gallinarum. The chemical analysis of the extract from MHE 68 indicated that linoleic acid (9,12-octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z)) and cyclodecasiloxane could be accountable for the antibacterial activity. This is the first study conducted on the secondary metabolites produced by endophytic fungal strains isolated from the Pelargonium sidoides DC. possessing antibacterial properties.

  • This study examines trends of children's play in Korea, and academic, pragmatic, and policy issues related to it. For the purpose, the researchers reviewed play theories, national and international views of play specialists, and research articles on children's play in selected academic journals published in Korea for the last 30 years. Although Korea has been active academically as well as politically in recognizing the importance of children's play, children's play in Korea seems to have lost its position, the true value of it being often distorted or unidentified. Many specialists worn that the deprivation of play opportunities increasing in modern societies will result in many serious problems. Play research therefore need to strengthen its power by being more accountable and broadening its foci toward solving such predictable problems.

  • Although the tasks are being mechanized or automated today, many taks are still performed manually in serveral indeustrial settings and low back pain has been a social and economic problem. In this study, five machine repair tasks are selected from one manufacturing company in Pohang, which are accountable for relatively high complaints of low back pain. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the hazards of the tasks, and finally to recommend the improved methods and guidelines for safe work practices. For most of the tasks under study, workers were found to be exposed to relatively high stresses in low back, mainly due to the heavy objects handled and the improper working postures.

  • In this paper, a modified Chebyshev low-pass filter function is proposed. The modified Chebyshev filter function exhibits ripples diminishing toward .omega. = 0 in the passband. So, the modified filter function is realizable in the passive doubly-terminated ladder network for the order n even or odd, thus lending itself amenable to active RC or switched capacitor filters through the simulation techniques. Besides the passive doubly-terminated ladder realizability, lower pole-Q values of the modified function are accountable for improved phase and delay characteristics, as compared to classical function. We have designed the 6th order passive doubly-terminated network using the modified function. And then a continuous-time DDA(Differential Difference Amplifier) filter, which has no matching requirement, is realized by leap-frog simulation technique for fabrication. In the HSPICE simulation results, we confirmed that the designed continuous-time DDA filter characteristics are agreement with the passive filter.

  • Purpose: This research explores the relationship between Nigerian consumer perception towards corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its influence on their buying behavior. Research design, data, and methodology: In order to achieve this, a structured three-part questionnaire was developed and distributed to 400 respondents to gather relevant information. The respondents were randomly selected from Lagos and Adamawa, Nigeria. Only 222 questionnaires. were completed and data was later analyzed using administering descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: a) Nigerian consumers have adequate knowledge about CSR; b) Nigerian consumers' awareness of socially responsible practices largely influences their purchasing decisions; c) Nigerian consumers' perceptions of the traditions of socially accountable actions influence their buying behavior. Conclusion: Although the research was targeted at the urban areas of Lagos and Jimeta/Yola in Nigeria, the findings indicate Nigerian consumers generally have a positive perception of CSR. The research offers invaluable contribution to the Nigerian corporates based on which they can reassess their existing CSR policies for better positioning of their company and their products.

  • There is an explosion of talk about crucial, new literacies for the 21st Century, for example critical thinking, problem-solving, media literacy, technology literacy, digital literacy, visual literacy. The other day, there was even an article about "gaming literacy!" How does one make sense of it all? The common factor in all these literacies is "information" - information seeking, information use, information processing, information presentation, and information evaluation. And, these "information" elements come together in information literacy: the ability to engage in effective and efficient information problem-solving. Information literacy is the overarching and unifying literacy, and all libraries have a unique and essential role to play in delivering meaningful information literacy programs to people of all ages. In this keynote paper and address, Professor and Dean Emeritus Mike Eisenberg will define the concept and structure of library-based information literacy programs and offer strategies for developing and implementing information literacy programs that are comprehensive(reaching all users), predictable (consistent over time), and accountable(measured and reported).

  • The p21-activated kinase-1 (PAK1) has emerged as a potential target for anticancer therapy. It is overexpressed in ovarian, breast and bladder cancers. This suggests that PAK1 may contribute to tumorigenesis. 4-azaindole derivatives are reported as potent PAK1 inhibitors. The present work deals with the molecular docking studies of 4-azaindoles with PAK1. Probable binding mode of these inhibitors has been identified by molecular modeling. Docking results indicated that hydrogen bonding interactions with Glu345 and Leu347 are responsible for governing inhibitor potency of the compounds. Additionally, Val284, Val328, Met344 and Leu396 were found to be accountable for hydrophobic interactions inside the active site of PAK1.

  • Earth's magnetopause separating the fast and often turbulent magnetosheath and the relatively stagnant magnetosphere provides various forms of free energy that generate low-frequency surface waves. The source mechanism of this energy includes current-driven kinetic physical processes such as magnetic reconnection on the dayside magnetopause and flux transfer events drifting along the magnetopause, and velocity shear-driven (Kelvin-Helmholtz instability) or density/pressure gradient-driven (Rayleigh-Taylor instability) magnetohydro-dynamics (MHD) instabilities. The solar wind external perturbations (impulsive transient pressure pulses or quasi-periodic dynamic pressure variations) act as seed fluctuations for the magnetopause waves and trigger ULF pulsations inside the magnetosphere via global modes or mode conversion at the magnetopause. The magnetopause waves thus play an important role in the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling, which is the key to space weather. This paper presents recent findings regarding the generation of surface waves (e.g., Kelvin-Helmholtz waves) at the Earth's magnetopause and analytic and observational studies accountable for the linking of the magnetopause waves and inner magnetospheric ULF pulsations, and the impacts of magnetopause waves on the dynamics of the magnetopause and on the inner magnetosphere.

  • The law gives the Ministry of Commerce the power of monitoring, oversight, and accountability for corporations in general. However, Article 219 of the Companies Law has made oversight of listed companies within the jurisdiction of the Capital Market Authority, but this exception, in the author's opinion, is not clear because the law obligated the Ministry of Commerce to monitor and account for joint-stock companies, whether they were listed or not included in some cases.
