To investigate effects of the shared living on nutrient intakes,250 college male students who were living alone (104 men) or sharing accommodation with friends (134 men) were participated. Their average age was 22.6 years, their average height was 171.8 cm, their average weight was 65.6 kg and their average Body Mass Index (BMI) was 22.2. The caloric intakes of the men living alone or sharing accommodation were 55.9% and 72.5% of the Korean Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), respectively. The decreased caloric level of the group living alone seemed to be due to their decreased protein and fat consumption as compared to that of the group sharing accommodation. The group living alone consumed increased amounts of fiber for breakfast and half the carbohydrates, but more fat (p < 0.05) in snacks than the group sharing accommodation. The daily carbohydrate : protein : fat (C : P : F) ratio averaged 58.6 14.1 27.3, which is a lower carbohydrate and a higher fat ratio than the Korean recommended ratio. However, the group living alone was closer to the Korean recommended ratio than the group sharing accommodation. The food intake habits were evaluated as being poorer in the group living alone as compared to the group sharing accommodation, less frequent consumption of fried / pan-fried dishes, and fruits / juices, but more frequent consumption of instant / processed foods. In comparing the eating patterns of the two groups, the group living alone showed better eating habits, such as more“breakfast eating”and less“snacking in the morning, afternoon or late at night”whereas the group sharing accommodation showed better eating habits such as less“picky eaters”and less “eating out”. In the group living alone, their lower caloric intake was assumably due to their fewer side dishes, however they showed higher eating frequencies of instant i processed foods. Since the lifestyle of living alone seems to grow gradually among young men, we strongly recommend dietary education for them.
Purpose : This study was to examine a correlation of response AC/A ratio by additional spherical powers with PD(Pupilary distance) and relative accommodation, and was to investigate correlation of CA/C ratio by prism powers. The mean differences between a reciprocal response AC/A ratio and a CA/C ratio were compared, and were suggested to be used as data in the refractive power and prism prescriptions in the clinical. Methods: The open field autorefractometer (Nvision-K 5001, Shin nippon) and Howell target at 40 cm fixation distance to 62 persons with average $22.62{\pm}2.84$ ages were used to measure the response AC/A ratio according to additional Spherical powers. The CA/C ratios were measured using the DOG card at 40cm according to prism powers. Results: When the response accommodation according to Additional Spherical power changes and the response accommodation according to prism power changes were compared, it was larger than the response accommodation according prism power change. These were significant differences statistically. The correlation of response AC/A ratio and PD is showed as r = -0.158, the CA / C ratio is shown as r = 0.093. The correlation of response AC/A ratio and relative accommodation showed as r = -0.253, the CA/C ratio showed as r = 0.566 that is predictable correlation. The correlation of response AC/A ratio and CA/C ratio showed as r = -0.355 that is low minus correlation (p = 0.000). The difference between a reciprocal response AC/A ratio and a CA/C ratio showed $0.12{\pm}0.06D/{\Delta}$ with a significant difference statistically (p=0.000). Conclusions: The correlation of relative accommodation and CA/C ratio showed that depend on the individual, The more a relative accommodation is, the higher a response accommodation of convergence by convergence stimulus is. The reciprocal response AC/A and CA/C ratio showed significant differences statistically. This can have higher CA/C ratio in patients with low AC/A ratio in clinical as an independent variable. Thus when the abnormal binocular vision was prescribed in the clinical, it is necessary to consider the accommodative response even if the AC/A ratio is a normal range.
In most previous studies, the assessment of accommodative convergence to accommodative stimulus (AC/A) ratio was commonly made by measuring gradient AC/A ratio. This study deals with the proximal convergence/accommodation(PC/A)ratio measured by comparing values of the gradient AC/A ratio and the calculated AC/A ratio to prevail the clinical use of the AC/A ratio. Visual acuities of All 124 subjects had been corrected to at least 1.0 with either eye through their habitual refractive correction and the MEM dynamic retinoscopy was performed to estimate their accommodative response. And then the PC/A ratio was calculated by making use of the calculated AC/A ratio and the gradient AC/A ratio. This study showed that the difference between the mean calculated AC/A ratio and the mean gradient AC/A ratio in subgroups may be attributable to proximal convergence. Consequently, further studies on proximity cues including the PC/A ratio could be helpful to prevail the clinical use of the AC/A ratio.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the convergence accommodation to convergence (CA/C) ratio and to investigate relationships among age, accommodative amplitude and PD (interpupillary distance) of adults in their early twenties with normal binocular vision. Methods: 44 subjects (mean age, $21.75{\pm}1.16$ years) with healthy eyes were examined. The CA/C ratios were measured by using the difference of Gaussian (DOG) target with retinoscopy. Results: The mean CA/C ratio was $0.052{\pm}0.017$ D/$\Delta$. A moderate negative correction was present between CA/C ratio and age (r = -0.50, p = 0.0005), and a highly positive correction was found between CA/C ratio and accommodative amplitude (r = 0.79, p<0.0001). There was no relation between PD and CA/C ratio. Conclusions: The CA/C ratio presented was mean value for adults in their early twenties with healthy eye between 19 and 25 years of age. There was a high correlation between accommodative amplitude and CA/C ratio. Therefore, the CA/C ratio will be useful basic information for comparison in age, gender and binocular anomalies with similar data from other countries.
Purpose: The current study was performed to compare the difference in binocular visual function depending on variable background colors at near work. Method: Fifty four adults (18 males, 34 females) who consented to the present study and had no ocular disease, ocular surgery history, strabismus and amblyopia with normal binocular vision were participated into this study. The subjects were asked to read the novels with black letter printed on white, red, green and blue background for 15 min. Then, their heterophoria, AC/A ratio, near point of convergence, accommodation facility, relative accommodation and vergence were measured before and after reading. The difference of measurements were compared. Result: Overall heterophoria was tended to decrease with regardless of background color. AC/A ratio showed a tendency of increase after reading the novels with all backgrounds except white background. Near point of convergence was significantly increased compared to before reading at all background color. Accommodative facility of dominant and non-dominant eyes were also significantly increased after reading however, binocular accommodative facility showed a tendency of decrease. Negative relative accommodation also decreased at all background colors however, the change of positive relative accommodation was not significantly different. In case of vergence, there was significant difference in break point of far BO and recovery point of far BI by the wavelength of background color. Conclusions: From the results, it was known there is convergence change depending on the wavelength of light even though same amount of accommodation and convergence is required when doing near work for certain period. Thus, it can be suggested that the adjustment of the near working environment which perception of various color was required, should be conducted according to the main wavelength.
Accommodation and convergence is combination movement which is closely connected with each other. When one of them is stimulated, both of functions occur at the same time. Specially, the convergence by the accommodation's stimulation is called as accommodative convergence. That has excess or deficiency according to refraction state of eye. This study was performed by using both of Gradient method and Heterophoria method to 41 adults who have no any ophthalmic disease. 1. As the result of investigation about the distribution of heterophoria at distance, there were orthophoria of 5 subjects, exophoria of 32 and esophoria of 4. Exoporia occupied at the hightest rate. The distribution of heterophoria at near cover a wider range more than at distance. 2. When we measured the horizontal heterophoria amount in the state of relaxation of accommodation power of lens, exophoria amount increased in case of 38 subjects. 3. The person who has $4{\sim}6{\Delta}/D$ which conform to normal AC/A ratio occupied 27 subjects(66%) in Heterophoria method and 16(39%) in Gradient method, respectively.
Purpose: To compare the characteristics and surgical outcomes in patients with tenacious proximal fusion (TPF) and high accommodative convergence/accommodation ratio (AC/A) types of intermittent exotropia. Methods: This study retrospectively enrolled 40 patients with intermittent exotropia, 23 with TPF and 17 with high AC/A. Binocular function was evaluated by Worth's 4-dot test. Patients underwent lateral rectus recession, and surgical outcomes were compared. Surgical success was defined as less than ${\pm}10$ prism diopters (PD) at 12 months postoperatively. Results: The proportion of diplopia at near, evaluated by Worth's 4-dot test, was significantly higher in patients with high AC/A than in those with TPF (35.3% vs. 4.3%, p = 0.029). The mean preoperative angles of deviation in TPF and high AC/A types were $28.3{\pm}4.4$ and $28.8{\pm}4.5PD$ at distances, and $14.7{\pm}4.2$ and $15.1{\pm}4.1PD$ at near. Twelve months after surgery, the mean angles of deviation in TPF and high AC/A types were $2.9{\pm}9.8$ and $1.2{\pm}9.6PD$, respectively, at distance and $1.7{\pm}7.7$ and $-1.3{\pm}11.3PD$ at near. The surgical success rates were similar in the TPF and high AC/A types (74.0% vs. 64.7%). Five (21.7%) patients with TPF and 2 (11.8%) with high AC/A type experienced recurrence, with consecutive esotropia occurring in 1 (4.3%) patient with TPF and 4 (23.5%) patients with high AC/A. Conclusions: The proportion of diplopia at near was higher in patients with high AC/A type than in those with TPF intermittent exotropia. However, the surgical success rates were not significantly different between the types.
Purpose: This study was to investigate that near gradient AC/A ratio could be used to prescribe a patient with distance exophoria, we compared the difference between distance gradient AC/A ratio and near gradient AC/A ratio. Also, this thesis was to understand the relationship between calculated AC/A ratio and gradient AC/A ratio. Methods: Objective and subjective refractive error were corrected and we used Howell (3 m) chart for distance phoria tests and Howell-Kim (40 cm) chart for near phoria tests. The near gradient AC/A ratio and calculated AC/A ratio were used by Howell-Kim (40 cm) combined with +1.00 D, -1.00 D, +2.00 D and -2.00 D. Results: The average value of distance exophoria was 1.17${\pm}$1.17 $\Delta$, and the average value of near exophoria was 3.71${\pm}$2.80 $\Delta$ (t-test. p<0.001). The correlation of distance phoria with near phoria was little higher (r = 0.59, p < 0.001). Gradient AC/A ratios depending on measuring distance and stimulus were higher (r = 0.11~0.53. P < 0.001), when distance was shorter and stimulus to accommodation was more. Also, stimulus to accommodation by plus lens was higher than stimulus to accommodation by minus lens (paired t-test. p < 0.001). There was negative correlation between calculated AC/A ratio and gradient AC/A ratio. As the calculated AC/A ratio was higher, gradient AC/A ratio was lesser. Near gradient AC/A ratio was slightly higher than distance gradient AC/A ratio. Distance and near gradient AC/A ratio taken through the subjective -1.00 D were 1.30 $\Delta$/D and 1.68 $\Delta$/D(t-test. t=1.67, p < 0.001). Conclusions: There is negative correlation between calculated AC/A ratio and gradient AC/A ratio. Also, there is subtle difference between near gradient AC/A ratio and distance gradient AC/A ratio. Therefore, we need to measure distance gradient AC/A ratio when a practitioner prescribe glasses for a patient with distance exophoria.
A study has been made to investigate the boundary sliding and its accommodation mode with respect to the variation of $\alpha$$_2$/$eta$ volume fraction during superplastic deformation of two-phase Ti$_3$Al-xNb intermetallics. Step strain rate and load relaxation tests have been performed at 950, 970 and 99$0^{\circ}C$ to obtain the flow stress curves and to analyze the deformation characteristics by the theory of inelastic deformation. The results show that the grain matrix deformation and boundary sliding of the three intermetallics containing 21, 50 and 77% in $eta$ volume fractions are well described by the plastic deformation and viscous flow equations. Due to the equal accommodation of both $a^2$ and $\beta$ phases, the accommodation modes for fine-grained materials are in good agreement with the iso-strain rate models. The sliding resistance analyzed for the different boundaries is the lowest in the $\alpha$$_2$/$\alpha$$_2$ boundary, and increases in the order of $\alpha$$_2$/$\alpha$$_2$<< $\alpha$$_2$/$\beta$ = $\beta$/$\beta$, which plays an important role in controlling the superplasticity of the alloys with the various $\alpha$$_2$/$\beta$ phase ratio.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the survey results of clinical performance and visual problem, and the survey were carried out before and after of VDT working for 4 hours by wearing functional lens designed for improving VDT syndrome and single-vision lens. Methods: We tested near & far visual acuity, change of spherical equivalent, near point of accommodation, near point of convergence, AC/A ratio, accommodative facility and survey of subjective symptoms to visual problem of before and after VDT working for 4 hours after wearing single-vision lens and functional lens subjected on 30 males and females in the age of 20 to 45. Results: When wearing functional lens comparing to single-vision lens, near visual acuity, near point of accommodation, near point of convergence, and accommodative facility are significantly improved. It is investigated that average scores of 10 items to visual problem after VDT working for 4 hours are 3.63${\pm}$0.75 at single-vision lens and 4.69 ${\pm}$ 0.83 at functional lens, and therefore functional lens is significantly improved. Conclusions: It is thought that functional lens is an excellent lens which helps to improve accommodative function and visual problem after VDT working for 4 hours than single-vision lens.
