  • PCN-PZT piezoelectric acceleration sensors of annular shear mode voltage type were fabricated and their characteristics have been investigated. Field tests are also carried out. To avoid noise problems from the environmental conditions, acceleration sensors employed solid state micro-electronics for pre-amplifier. The calibration procedures based on the principle of the comparison method were adopted for investigating the characteristics of fabricated acceleration sensors. The voltage sensitivity and resonant frequency of fabricated acceleration sensors were 83mv/g, 23kHz, respectively. The lower and upper frequency limit were 4Hz and 9kHz, respectively. The variation of the voltage sensitivity showed 10% at $-406{\circ}C\; and\; 9%\; at\; 121^{\circ}C$ compared to that of reference temperature at $40^{\circ}C$.

  • Acceleration sensors have widely been used in the various fields of industry. In recent years, micromachining accelerometers have been developed and commercialized by the micromachining technique or MEMS technique. Typical structure of such sensors consist of a cantilever beam and a vibrating mass fabricated on Si wafers using etching. This study investigates the feasibility of powder blasting technique for microfabrication of sensor structures made of the pyrex glass alternating the existing Si based acceleration sensor. First, as preliminary experiment, effect of blasting pressure, mass flow rate of abrasive and no. of nozzle scanning on erosion depth of pyrex and soda lime glass is studied. Then the optimal blasting conditions are chosen for pyrex sensor. Structure dimensions of designed glass sensor are 2.9mm and 0.7mm for the cantilever beam length and width and 1.7mm for the side of square mass. Mask material is from aluminium sheet of 0.5mm in thickness. Machining results showed that tolerance errors of basic dimensions of glass sensor ranged from 3um in minimum to 20um in maximum. This results imply the powder blasting can be applied for micromachining of glass acceleration sensors alternating the exiting Si based sensors.

  • This paper presents the results of a pilot study and verification of a concept of a novel methodology for damage detection and assessment of water distribution system. The unique feature of the proposed noninvasive methodology is the use of accelerometers installed on the pipe surface, instead of pressure sensors that are traditionally installed invasively. Experimental observations show that a sharp change in pressure is always accompanied by a sharp change of pipe surface acceleration at the corresponding locations along the pipe length. Therefore, water pressure-monitoring can be transformed into acceleration-monitoring of the pipe surface. The latter is a significantly more economical alternative due to the use of less expensive sensors such as MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) or other acceleration sensors. In this scenario, monitoring is made for Maximum Pipe Acceleration Gradient (MPAG) rather than Maximum Water Head Gradient (MWHG). This paper presents the results of a small-scale laboratory experiment that serves as the proof of concept of the proposed technology. The ultimate goal of this study is to improve upon the existing SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) by integrating the proposed non-invasive monitoring techniques to ultimately develop the next generation SCADA system for water distribution systems.

  • Humans have used acceleration sensors to perceive behavior. Using the application principles of inertia sensor such as acceleration and gyro sensors, the sensor indirectly measures movement through forces applied on a three-dimensional axis. This may result in different results depending on the location of the sensor in possession, even in the same way. The sensor, which is also mounted on popular smartphones, measured different values of acceleration sensors, whether in hand or in pocket, which are commonly used by people.

  • Tracking the motion of tennis balls is a challenging task in using cameras around the tennis court. The most important instance of the tennis trajectory is the time of impact and touch the court which in some cases could not be detected precisely. In the present study, we aim to present a novel design of tennis balls equipped with nano-sensors to detect the touch of the ball to the court. In the impact instance, tennis ball receives significant acceleration and change in the linear momentum. This large acceleration could deform a small-beam structure with piezoelectric layer to produce voltage. The voltage could further be utilized to produce infrared waves which could be easily detected by infrared detection sensors installed on the same video cameras or separately near the tennis court. Therefore, the exact time of the impact could be achieved with higher accuracy than image analyzing method. A detailed dynamical property of such sensors is discussed using nonlinear beam equations. The results show that within the acceleration range of tennis ball during an impact, the piezoelectric patches of the nano-sensors in the tennis ball could produce enough voltages to propagate infrared waves to be detected by infrared detectors.

  • In this paper, a small and effective attitude estimation system for a humanoid robot was developed. Four small inertial sensors were packed and used for inertial measurements(3D accelerometer and three 1D gyroscopes.) An effective 3D pose estimation algorithm for low cost DSP using an extended Kalman filter was developed and evaluated. The 3D pose estimation algorithm has a very simple structure composed by 3 modules of a linear acceleration estimator, an external acceleration detector and an pseudo-accelerometer output estimator. The algorithm also has an effective switching structure based on probability and simple feedback loop for the extended Kalman filter. A special test equipment using linear motor for the testing of the 3D pose sensor was developed and the experimental results showed its very fast convergence to real values and effective responses. Popular DSP of TMS320F2812 was used to calculate robot's 3D attitude and translated acceleration, and the whole system were packed in a small size for humanoids robots. The output of the 3D sensors(pitch, roll, 3D linear acceleration, and 3D angular rate) can be transmitted to a humanoid robot at 200Hz frequency.

  • The ARS(Attitude Reference System) calculates an attitude of a vehicle using inertial angular rate sensors and acceleration sensors. The attitude error of ARS increases due to the integration of angular rate sensor output. To reduce the attitude error an acceleration of sensor is used similar to leveling method of INS(Inertial Navigation System). When an acceleration of vehicle is increased, it is difficult to calculate the attitude error using acceleration sensor output. In this paper the estimation method of acceleration due to the attitude error only is proposed. Two methods of the attitude calculation depending on vehicle dynamics and the integration method of these two methods are proposed. To verify its performance the monte carlo simulation is performed and shows that it bounds attitude error of ARS to reasonable level.

  • Organic ferroelectric material found vast application in a verity of engineering and health technology fields. In the present study, we investigated the application of the deformable organic ferroelectric in motion measurement and improving performance in tennis players. Flexible ferroelectric material P(VDF-TrFE) could be used in wearable motion sensors in tennis player transferring velocity and acceleration data to collecting devises for analyzing the best pose and movements in tennis players to achieve best performances in terms of hitting ball and movement across the tennis court. In doing so, ferroelectric-based wearable sensors are used in four different locations on the player body to analyze the movement and also a sensor on the tennis ball to record the velocity and acceleration. In addition, poses of tennis players were analyzed to find out the best pose to achieve best acceleration and movement. The results indicated that organic ferroelectric-based sensors could be used effectively in sensing motion of tennis player which could be utilized in the optimization of posing and ball hitting in the real games.

  • As the number of earthquakes gradually increases on the Korean Peninsula, much research has been actively conducted to detect earthquakes quickly and accurately. Because traditional seismic stations are expensive to install and operate, recent research is currently being conducted to detect earthquakes using low-cost MEMS sensors. In this article, we evaluate how a low-cost MEMS acceleration sensor installed in a smartphone can be used to detect earthquakes. To this end, we installed about 280 smartphones at various locations in Korea to collect acceleration data and then assessed the installed sensors' noise floor through PSD calculation. The noise floor computed from PSD determines the magnitude of the earthquake that the installed MEMS acceleration sensors can detect. For the last few months of real operation, we collected acceleration data from 200 smartphones among 280 installed smartphones and then computed their PSDs. Based on our experiments, the MEMS acceleration sensor installed in the smartphone is capable of observing and detecting earthquakes with a magnitude 3.5 or more occurring within 10km from an epic center. During the last several months of operation, the smartphone acceleration sensor recorded an earthquake of magnitude 3.5 in Miryang on December 30, 2019, and it was confirmed as an earthquake using STA/LTA which is a simple earthquake detection algorithm. The earthquake detection system using MEMS acceleration sensors is expected to be able to detect increasing earthquakes more quickly and accurately.

  • The stress analysis of the pipeline is required in any kind of plant for its safe operation. For this, the displacement vibration data measured at many locations of the pipeline should be provided. In reality, the installation of the non-contact type displacement sensors such as laser displacement sensors or eddy current type proximity sensors in a narrow and confined region in the vicinity of the pipeline is almost impracticable. In this work, the general purpose piezo-ceramic accelerometers were attached on the measuring points on the pipeline and the acceleration vibration signal was acquired. The measured acceleration signal was low pass filtered and then downsampled. The resulting acceleration signal was transformed into both the time-domain and frequency-domain displacement signal utilizing the fast Fourier transform techniques. All the procedures are presented in detail. It is demonstrated that the measurement of the pipeline acceleration by using contact type accelerometers can be made for the purpose of providing the required displacement data for the stress analysis of the pipeline.
