  • Mercurous Bromide ($Hg_2Br_2$) crystals hold promise for many acousto-optic and opto-electronic applications. This material is prepared in closed ampoules by the physical vapor transport (PVT) growth method. We investigate the effects of solutal convection on the crystal growth rate in a horizontal configuration for diffusive-convection conditions and purely diffusion conditions achievable in a low gravity environment. Our results show that the growth rate is decreased by a factor of one-fourth with a ten reduction of gravitational acceleration near y = 2.0 cm. For 0.1 $g_O$ the growth rate pattern exhibits relatively flat which is intimately related to diffusion-dominated processes. The growth rate nonuniformity is regardless of aspect ratio across the interfacial positions from 0 to 1.5. Also, the effect of a factor of the ten reduction in the gravitational acceleration is same to both Ar = 5 and 2. The enlargement in the molecular weight of B from 50 to 500 by a factor 4 causes a decrease in the maximum growth rate by the same factor, indicative of the effect of solutal gradients.

  • We investigate how plasma structures in the solar chromosphere and corona can extend to altitudes much above hydrostatic scale heights from the solar surface even under the force of gravity. Using a simple modified form of equation of motion in the vertical direction, we argue that there are two extreme ways of non-hydrostatic support: dynamical support and magnetic support. If the vertical acceleration is downward and its magnitude is a significant fraction of gravitational acceleration, non-hydrostatic support is dynamical in nature. Otherwise non-hydrostatic support is static, and magnetic support by horizontal magnetic fields is the only other possibility. We describe what kind of observations are needed in the clarification of the nature of non-hydrostatic support. Observations available so far seem to indicate that spicules in the quiet regions and dynamic fibrils in active regions are dynamically supported whereas the general chromosphere as well as prorninences is magnetically supported. Moreover, it appears that magnetic support is required for plasma in some coronal loops as well. We suspect that the identification of a coronal loop with a simple magnetic flux tube might be wrong in this regard.

  • According as ground acceleration becomes to exceed gravity acceleration recently, design is impossible or economical efficiency is poor in existing seismic design method. So increase of seismic isolated bridges is currently in progress. However, because base isolation design method is developed in high seismic regions. it may not be compatible in Korea. Therefore, this research has objective to evaluate ductility of pier and response modification factor according to the ductility of pier in seismic isolated bridges and to adapt to seismic characteristics in Korea. For this purpose, nonlinear analysis is accomplished with so many time histories derived from spectral density function compatible with response spectrum described in the design code and base isolation system modeled linear system, bi-linear system, and friction system. Through application of the proposed method, we had result that it may be compatible that response modification factor for the seismic isolated bridges is smaller than half of that for the conventional bridges when natural period of structures exceeds proper level.

  • Astronomical observations strongly suggest that the expansion rate of our universe is currently under acceleration. The nature of the so-called dark energy causing the acceleration is unknown, and it is one of the fundamental mysteries in the present day theoretical cosmology. Here we briefly review the current state of cosmic dark energy research in both theoretical and observational sides. Constraints on dynamical dark energy models (e.g., w-fluid, quintessence, and modified gravity) with recent observational data from type Ia supernovae, cosmic microwave background radiation, and large-scale structures in the universe indicate a preferred direction toward the simplest ${\Lambda}$CDM world model. We also discuss some issues regarding the early dark energy model and the spherical collapse of matter in the presence of dark energy.

  • This paper presents the use of 3 axis accelerometer for getting the gait information including the number of gaits, stride and walking distance. Travel distance is usually calculated from the double integration of the accelerometer output with respect to time; however, the accumulated errors due to the drift are inevitable. The orientation change of the accelerometer also causes error because the gravity is added to the measured acceleration. Unless three axis orientations are completely identified, the accelerometer alone does not provide correct acceleration for estimating the travel distance. We proposed a way of minimizing the error due to the change of the orientation. Pedestrian localization is implemented with the heading angle and the travel distance. Heading angle is estimated from the rate gyro and the magnetic compass measurements. The performance of the localization is presented with experimental data.

  • Rollover accidents are a common occurrence on the highway ramp section. At highway ramp section, unexpected situations might occur due to demand on complex steering control unlike routine driving maneuver in the main streamline. Commercial vehicles have higher risk of rollover due to their high center of gravity. In this study, the lateral acceleration causing rollover would be found. In addition, sections would be classified as dangerous and safe ones by confirming the maximum lateral acceleration for various speed and curvature.

  • Experiments under the stationary and harvesting condition, were performed in order to investigate the vibration characteristics of a head-feeding combine. 6 degrees of freedom components of acceleration at the location of the center of the gravity, and 3 degrees of freedom components of acceleration at the location of the operator seat were measured independently. The vibration characteristics of the combine were estimated with the power spectral density of the time series data of accelerations. From this research, the following results were obtained. 1. Vibration of a head-feeding combine under the stationary condition(engine, thresher and cutter are driven without harvesting) is mainly influenced by the engine. Further, 1/3, 1/2 (sub-harmonic) frequency components of the engine are observed besides engine driving frequency component(45Hz). 2. Vibration of a head-feeding combine under the harvesting condition is influenced by the engine, threshing unit and driving unit. Namely, some kinds of vibration frequency components in harvesting are observed compared with stationary condition. Further, sub-harmonic frequency components of the engine are observed besides engine driving frequency component as same as stationary condition. From these results, it may be concluded that vibration of a head-feeding combine is characteristics of semi-periodic and nonlinear vibration.

  • The use of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) accelerometers in geotechnical instrumentation is relatively new but on the rise. This paper describes a new MEMS-based system for in situ deformation and vibration monitoring. The system has been developed in an effort to combine recent advances in the miniaturization of sensors and electronics with an established wireless infrastructure for on-line geotechnical monitoring. The concept is based on triaxial MEMS accelerometer measurements of static acceleration (angles relative to gravity) and dynamic accelerations. The dynamic acceleration sensitivity range provides signals proportional to vibration during earthquakes or construction activities. This MEMS-based in-place inclinometer system utilizes the measurements to obtain three-dimensional (3D) ground acceleration and permanent deformation profiles up to a depth of one hundred meters. Each sensor array or group of arrays can be connected to a wireless earth station to enable real-time monitoring as well as remote sensor configuration. This paper provides a technical assessment of MEMS-based in-place inclinometer systems for geotechnical instrumentation applications by reviewing the sensor characteristics and providing small- and full-scale laboratory calibration tests. A description and validation of recorded field data from an instrumented unstable slope in California is also presented.

  • In this study, we designed a device for consecutively observing position, utilizing 3-axises acceleration sensor. This method offer to check his or her wrong position and developed could to help derived a position appliance. And, we developed a Cobb's angle value in three dimensional using 3-axises acceleration sensor. A proposed device with integrated accelerometers, which can detect postural changes in terms of curvature variation of the spine in the sagittal and coronal planes, has been developed with intention to facilitate posture training. The proposed device was evaluated with 3 normal subjects daily activities. We evaluated the performance of our designed device as calculating the correlation coefficients and mean errors between the angle measured by an electro-goniometer and that estimated by a gravity accelerometer and verified the accuracy and sensitivity. The results showed that the angle obtained from the proposed device revealed a linear characteristic at the range of $\pm60^{\circ}$(correlation coefficient 0.99, error range $\pm2^{\circ}$). We demonstrated that our device could detect the changes of the motion in upper trunk accurately. Also, our device showed good potential for treatment of the patients with scoliosis and prevention of the unbalance position during a daily life.

  • Flyby anomaly (unexpected energy increase during Earth Gravity Assists) indicates existence of an unknown non-conservative perturbation which affects hyperbolic trajectories. This presentation focuses on first order position and velocity perturbation formulas derived in terms of classical orbital element variations for hyperbolic orbit. By using both the perturbation formulas and numerical approach, we analyze effects of hypothetical acceleration models proposed by Hasse (2009), Lewis (2009), Gerrad and Sumner (2008), and Busack (2007). Based on analysis of perturbation effect on low earth orbit, we find that typical position perturbation is about 10m which is much larger than current orbit determination accuracy. From this, we deduce that anomalous acceleration only affects hyperbolic orbit or behaves differently in bound orbit. On the other hand, based on analysis of perturbation effects on hyperbolic trajectories, we find that position and velocity perturbations are highly different from acceleration models, and all of proposed models fail to explain observed range and Doppler data. Thus, it can be concluded that not only energy variations but also kinematics gives us crucial clues on the flyby anomaly, and kinematical characteristic should be considered in modeling flyby anomaly.
