In this study, subway train vibration has been measured to characterize the whole body vibration of Seoul subway lines for various human postures. Results show that the floor vibration level of the subway trains in the vertical direction is higher than that in other directions. At the standing human posture, vibration level of the head in the right-left direction are increased while that in the vertical direction is decreased. It is assumed that the different flexibility of the human body and the rolling motion of the subway trains are the main cause. At the sitting posture with back seat on, vibration level in the right and left direction at the human ischial tuberosities is lower than that in other directions. Results also show that there were little difference between back-seat on model and back-seat off model. Transmissibility analysis shows how the subway vibration affects the response of a human body.
The ride quality of agricultural tractor seats is evaluated based on the vibration of the human bodies. Tractor ride vibration levels have been measured at the person-seat interface along 7 axes(3 translational axes at the feet, 3 translational axes on a seat surface and 1 axis at the seat back), under different operating conditions. Since one of the most important parameters for ride comfort is the level and duration of the root mean square acceleration experienced, the ride values, such as the seat effective amplitude transmissibility, the component ride value, and the overall ride value based on acceleration root mean square are evaluated for a conventional tractor using frequency weighting functions and axis multiplying factors. The ride indices are also studied considering to the variation of vehicle speed and road profile.
Shear connectors are generally used to link the slab and girders together in slab-on-girder bridge structures. Damage of shear connectors in such structures will result in shear slippage between the slab and girders, which significantly reduces the load-carrying capacity of the bridge. Because shear connectors are buried inside the structure, routine visual inspection is not able to detect conditions of shear connectors. A few methods have been proposed in the literature to detect the condition of shear connectors based on vibration measurements. This paper proposes a different dynamic condition assessment approach to identify the damage of shear connectors in slab-on-girder bridge structures based on power spectral density transmissibility (PSDT). PSDT formulates the relationship between the auto-spectral densities of two responses in the frequency domain. It can be used to identify shear connector conditions with or without reference data of the undamaged structure (or the baseline). Measured impact force and acceleration responses from hammer tests are analyzed to obtain the frequency response functions at sensor locations by experimental modal analysis. PSDT from the slab response to the girder response is derived with the obtained frequency response functions. PSDT vectors in the undamaged and damaged states can be compared to identify the damage of shear connectors. When the baseline is not available, as in most practical cases, PSDT vectors from the measured response at a reference sensor to those of the slab and girder in the damaged state can be used to detect the damage of shear connectors. Numerical and experimental studies on a concrete slab supported by two steel girders are conducted to investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach. Identification results demonstrate that damages of shear connectors are identified accurately and efficiently with and without the baseline. The proposed method is also used to evaluate the conditions of shear connectors in a real composite bridge with in-field testing data.
This paper deals with the whole-body vibration and ride quality evaluation in the vertical direction. The responses of the floor, hip, back, and head in four subjects were measured for various seats when the floor was excited by random vibration with r.m.s of 1.2m/s2 in the vertical direction. In the transmissibility between the hip and floor, the fundamental mode is observed at 4.4 Hz. In the transmissibility between the head and floor, the fundamental mode at 4.4Hz and the second mode at 7.6Hz are observed. It is shown that the head motion is 41% larger than the hip motion and the response of female subject is larger than that of male subject. The response without backrest also was compared with that with backrest. From these human responses ride quality of five seats were evaluated by the ride value such as transfer ration having frequency weighting function is the statistical sense. It is observed that the seat having high damping property can reduce the most acceleration exposed to hip in the statistical sense for all ride valves, while the seat having different seat spring doesn't show statistical difference.
Authors previously suggested the design sensitivity analysis based on transmissibility function and identified the sensitivity of measured point over the small modification of system dynamics. On the other hand, the acceleration data will not reveal the strain information at the same location and authors suggested energy isoclines that successfully predict the fatigue damage on the interesting location to overcome the drawback of acceleration over fatigue society. Both of methodologies, sensitivity analysis and fatigue damage prediction, commonly use the response acceleration response as main indicator. In this paper, authors investigate the advanced method of vibration fatigue prediction using design sensitivity analysis to enhance the accuracy of predicted accumulated fatigue. Uni-axial vibration testing is performed with finite element model of a simple notched specimen and the prediction of fatigue damage at notched location is conducted for accelerations at different measurement locations that show different sensitivity contribution, either.
It was previously suggested the design sensitivity analysis based on transmissibility function to identify the most sensitive response location over a small design modification. On the other hand, energy isoclines were used to predict the fatigue damage with acceleration response only. Both of previous studies commonly tackle the engineering problem using the acceleration response alone such that it may be possible to investigate the relationship between sensitivity analysis and accumulated fatigue damage. In this paper, it is suggested the novel method of vibration fatigue prediction using design sensitivity analysis to enhance the accuracy of predicted accumulated fatigue. Uni-axial vibration testing is performed with a simple notched specimen and the prediction of fatigue damage is conducted using accelerations measured at different locations. It can be concluded that the accuracy of predicted fatigue damage is proportional to the sensitivity index of the responsible location.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the vibration characteristics and develop a mounting which can improve the strength safety factor to replace the high failure rate APU(auxiliary power unit) imported metal mounts with rubber mount that can be domestically produced. For this study, we analyzed in 3 kinds of rubber mounts hardness for the natural frequency to avoid the average excited frequency of the APU. In addition, allowed vibration acceleration of rubber mount confirmed to 90.8 g by adding a strength safety factor. To assure the validity of the design, we measure the vibration acceleration equipped with a metal mount and rubber mount 2 species(Hs 50 and 60). As a result, the proposed design method in this study is reasonable because the rubber mounts is excellent strength safety factor and vibration transmissibility than metal mounts.
This study aims to show the guideline to select optimal anti-vibration gloves for specific power tools to prevent hazardous vibration to human body. It is most desirable for the correct evaluation of handtransmitted vibration form the power tool handle to measure the acceleration between the handle surface and the hand palm as recommended in ISO 5349-1. First, the accurate acceleration measurement device was developed of which the thickness and weight were less than 6 mm and 12 g respectively so that it can be placed between the handle and the palm without any inconvenience during the measurement. Finally, using the device we estimated anti-vibration glove performances considering the frequency characteristics of generated vibration by the power tool.
This paper addresses experimental results carried out to investigate the transmission of seat vibration to the head for Korean. Vertical seat vibration in the frequency range of 0.5-30 Hz was applied to a seated Korean male subject. To examine the intra-variable effects on transmissibility, five different postures and three different vibration excitation levels were considered. The applied acceleration and head accelerations of the seated subject were measured simultaneously by using a 6-axes bite-bar. Detailed experimental results of measured transmissibilities are illustrated for each posture and/or vibration excitation level. They are found to allow the identification of dynamic characteristics of Korean seated body for various real vibration environments. Furthermore, they are expected to be very useful in designing new seats for automotive and railway vehicles and in improving their vibration ride quality.
