  • Rooting test of 5 species plants in Acanthopanax genus was carried out to see the comparative effect of growth regulators NAA IBA and IAA. And the results are summarized as in the following compendia; (1) When hard and soft-wood cutting from new shoot of 5 species were taken and dipping treated with growth regulators such as NAA IBA and IAA at varied concentration levels their roofings were mostly more superior to the control that untreated. And also treatment of NAA and IBA among treated substances were more effective than IAA. (2) The effects on the rooting number and rate made a great difference according to species of Acanthopanax genus even if the same regulator was treated. (3) Decreasing effects of rooting by high concentration obstacle (especially at 2,000 rpm) of NAA and IBA in other species except A. sieboldianum were mostly serious. On the other hand, that in case of IAA treatment was not risen in most species except A. sessiliflorus.

  • Acanthopanax sessiliflorum of family of Araliaceae, Korean wild plant was first described by T. $N_{AKAI}$ in 1909. Although Acanthopanax has been formerly classified by 2 genera, 8 species, but it could be rearranged by 1 genus, 7 species. A. sessiliflorum among 7 species was distributed almost all over the country and A. senticosus was available mainly in the northern part and distribution of A. senticosus was coming down southward alongside Mt. Taibaik and Mt. Sobaik from North. A. chiisanense was mainly distributed over the southern part in the middle area, and the other 4 species were rarely distributed in limited places.

  • High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used for the analysis of the lignans eleutheroside B and eleutheroside E in the fruits of Acanthopanax species. A reverse-phase system using a gradient of $H_2O$ and acetonitrile as the mobile phase was developed and detection was at 210 nm. The analysis was successfully carried out within 20 min. The content of eleutheroside B and eleutheroside E in Acanthopanax species was measured in the fruits of A. senticosus (0.58 and $1.66\;{\mu}g/mg$, respectively), A. sessiliflorus (1.15 and $8.49\;{\mu}g/mg$, respectively), A. koreanum (2.16 and $1.80\;{\mu}g/mg$, respectively), and A. divaricatus (1.06 and $7.08\;{\mu}g/mg$, respectively).

  • Reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic method was applied for the determination of eleutheroside B and E in the various Acanthopanax species collected In Korea. The stationary phase used was Zorbax 300 SB $C_{18}$ and a mobile phase program was used, which started at 6% acetonitrile for 2 min, and then a linear gradient was operated for the next 18 min to 17% acetonitrile at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. The column effluent was monitored at UV 210 nm. Identification was carried out by comparing the retention time and the LC/MS spectrum of each peak corresponding to eleutheroside B and E from sample with those of standards. In general, the contents of eleutheroside B and 1 in stems were higher than those In roots. Acanthopanax species could be classified into two groups based upon the contents of eleutheroside B and E: one group contains no or very little eleutheroside B and another contains both eleutheroside B and E.

  • Acanthopanax species (Araliaceae) traditionally has been used as analgesics, stimulant of immune system, and replenishment of body functions. Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus is indigenous plant to Korea. The antioxidant activities of compounds from A divaricatus var. albeofructus were determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) assay on human plasma low-density lipoprotein (LDL). The triterpenoid and lignan constituents from this plant showed antioxidant activities and the lignan, l-sesamin exhibited the most potent antioxidant activity in Cu$^{2+}$ -induced LDL oxidation.n.

  • Six compounds were isolated from the fruits of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus. Their structures were elucidated as (-)-sesamin, scoparone, protocatechuic acid, ursolic acid, hyperin and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural by physicochemical and spectroscopic analysis. Among them, scoparone, ursolic acid and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural were isolated for the first time from Acanthopanax species.

Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus is a indigenous plant in Korea. The anti-lipid peroxidation activities of the loaves and root bark extracts of A divaricatus var. albeofructus were determined. Activities of MeOH extracts were examined in vitro and in vivo with control group intoxicated by carbon tetrachloride. Both extracts showed significant inhibitory effects on the lipid peroxidation.

  • "Ga Si O Gal Pi" is one of the Korean crude drugs used mainly to cure arthritis, acute gastritis, and beriberi. With regard to the botanical origin of "Ga Si O Gal Pi", it has been considered to be Acanthopanax species of Araliaceae, but there was no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. To clarify the botanical origin of "Ga Si O Gal Pi", the anatomical characteristics of the branch of Acanthopanax species growing wild in Korea and Japan, A. chiisanensis, A. divaricatus, A. koreanum, A. rufinerve, A. senticosus, A. seoulense, A. sessiliflorus, A. sieboldiaum were studied. As a result, it was clarified that "Ga Si O Gal Pi" was the branch and rarely the bark of branch of Acanthopanax senticosus.

  • Species of genus Acanthopanax(Araliaceae) are long-lived trees primarily distributed throughout East Asia. These species are regarded as medically and ecologically important in Korea. A variety of Cheongsong in Korea is one of these cultivated varieties, however this variety is much longer(>100 years) than those of other cultivated groups. The components of variety of Acanthopanax in Cheongsong were analyzed for the first time and were compared to those of all Acanthopanax taxa in Korea. Nineteen components were specific to variety in Cheongsong. The main components of this variety were $\beta$-caryophyllene, hexadecanoic acid and ethyl stearate. Although some components are differ from each other, variety Cheongsong was similar to A. senticosus at phonetic topology with content of the chemicals, In addition, six species of genus Acanthopanax were investigated to compare the major chemical components by GC-MS.
