  • Geopolymer concrete is finding a growing number of niche applications in the field of civil engineering due to its high compressive strength and strength gain rate, retainage of structural properties in elevated temperature environments, chemical stability in highly acidic conditions and environmental benefits. Combining the above mentioned characteristics with induced electrical conductivity, could enable geopolymer cement to serve as a smart and sustainable cementitious material suitable for health monitoring of civil structures. Carbon fibers were added to fresh geopolymer and OPC (ordinary Portland cement) mixes to enhance their electrical conductivities. AC-impedance spectroscopy analysis was performed on the specimens with fiber fraction ranging from 0.008 to 0.8 with respect to the weight of cementitious binder, to measure their electrical resistivity values and to determine the maximum beneficial fiber content required to attain electrical percolation. Experimental observations suggest that CFR-geopolymer cement exhibits superior performance to CFR-OPC in terms of conducting electrical current.

  • Lithium batteries are widely used in mobile electronic devices due to their higher voltage and energy density, lighter weight and longer life cycle compared to other secondary batteries. In particular, high demand for lithium batteries is expected for electric cars. In case of lithium batteries used in electric cars, driving distance must be calculated accurately and discharging should not be done below the level of making it impossible to crank. Therefore, accurate information about state of charge (SOC) becomes an essential element for reliable driving. In this paper, a new method of estimating the SOC of lithium polymer batteries by using AC impedance is proposed. In the proposed method, parameters are extracted by fitting a curve of impedance measured at each frequency on the equivalent impedance model and extracted parameters are used to estimate SOC. Experiments were conducted on lithium polymer batteries with similar capacities made by different manufacturers to prove the validity of the proposed method.

In the proposed method, the parameters are extracted by fitting the measured impedance spectrum on an equivalent impedance model and the variation in the parameter values at each SOC is used to estimate the SOC. Also to shorten the long length of time required for the measurement of the impedance spectrum, a novel method is proposed that can extract the equivalent impedance model parameters of lithium polymer batteries with the impedance measured at only two specific frequencies. Experiments are conducted on lithium polymer batteries, with similar capacities, made by different manufacturers to prove the validity of the proposed method.

  • A growing interest has emerged in recycling used automobile batteries into energy storage systems (ESSs) to prevent their harmful effects to the environment from improper disposal and to recycle such resources. To transform used batteries into ESSs, composing battery modules with similar performance by grading them is crucial. Imbalance among battery modules degrades the performance of an entire system. Thus, the selection of modules with similar performance and remaining life is the first prerequisite in the reuse of used batteries. In this study, we develop an instrument to measure the impedance spectrum of a battery module to predict the useful remaining life of the used battery. The developed hardware and software are used to apply the AC perturbation to the used battery module and measure its impedance spectrum. The developed instrument can measure the impedance spectrum of the battery module from 0.1 Hz to 1 kHz and calculate the equivalent circuit parameters through curve fitting. The performance of the developed instrument is verified by comparing the measured impedance spectra with those obtained by a commercial equipment.

  • Electrochemical lithium intercalation into a PECVD (plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposited) carbon film electrode was investigated in 1 M $LiPF_6-EC$ (ethylene carbonate) and DEC (diethyl carbonate) solution during lithium intercalation and deintercalation, by using cyclic voltammetry supplemented with ac-impedance spectroscopy. The size of the graphitic crystallite in the a- and c-axis directions obtained from the carbon film electrode was much smaller than those of the graphite one, indicating less-developed crystalline structure with hydrogen bonded to carbon, from the results of AES (Auger electron spectroscopy), powder XRD (X-ray diffraction) method, and FTIR(Fourier transform infra-red) spectroscopy. It was shown from the cyclic voltammograms and ac-impedance spectra of carbon film electrode that a threshold overpotential was needed to overcome an activation barrier to entrance of lithium into the carbon film electrode, such as the poor crystalline structure of the carbon film electrode showing disordered carbon and the presence of residual hydrogen in its structure. The experimental results were discussed in terms of the effect of host carbon structure on the lithium intercalation capability.

  • The battery's State of Health (SOH) is a critical parameter in the process of battery use, as it represents the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of the battery. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is a widely used technique in observing the state of the battery. The measured impedance at certain frequencies can be used to evaluate the state of the battery, as it is intimately tied to the underlying chemical reactions. In this work, a low-cost portable EIS instrument is developed on the basis of the ARM Cortex-M4 Microcontroller Unit (MCU) for measuring the impedance spectrum of Li-ion battery packs. The MCU uses a built-in DAC module to generate the sinusoidal sweep perturbation signal. Moreover, it performs the dual-channel acquisition of voltage and current signals, calculates impedance using a Digital Lock-in Amplifier (DLA), and transmits the result to a PC. By using LabVIEW, an interface was developed with the real-time display of the EIS information. The developed instrument was suitable for measuring the impedance spectrum of the battery pack up to 1000 V. The measurement frequency range of the instrument was from 1 hz to 1 Khz. Then, to prove the performance of the developed system, the impedance of a Samsung SM3 battery pack and a Bexel pouch module were measured and compared with those obtained by the commercial instrument.

  • In this paper, a low-cost impedance spectroscopy system(LCISS) suitable for modeling the electrochemical power sources such as fuel cells, batteries and supercapacitors is designed and implemented. Since the developed LCISS is composed of simple sensor circuits, commercial data acquisition board and LabVIEW software, a graphic language with powerful HMI(Human-Machine Interface), it is expected ta be widely used in substitution of the expensive EIS instruments. In the proposed system, the digital lock-in amplifier is adopted to achieve the accurate measurements even in the presence of the high level of noises. The developed hardware and software is applied to measure the impedance spectrum of the Ballard Nexa 1.2kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack and an equivalent impedance model is proposed based on the measurement results. The validity of the proposed equivalent circuit and the developed system is proven by the measurement of the ac power losses of the PEM fuel celt stack by the ripple current.

  • We synthesized and investigated $(La_{0.75}Sr_{0.25})_{1-x}FeO_{3-\delta}$ perovskite oxides having different stoichiomety (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08) as cathode materials. SEM images and XRD patterns reveal that the synthesized powder has uniform size distribution and high degree of crystallinity. The electrochemical performances of the synthesized powders were investigated by AC impedance spectroscopy. Both the electric conductivity and the electrochemical performance showed the highest properties at the stoichiometry x = 0.02. Finally, we concluded that the variation of A-site deficiency results in the variation of the amount of oxygen vacancy and micro structure, which leads to the variation of electric conductivity and polarization resistance.
