  • This study began with an epistemological question about the nature of mathematical cognition in relation to the learner's activity. Therefore, by examining Piaget's 'reflective abstraction' theory which can be an answer to the question, we tried to get suggestions which can be given to the mathematical education in practice. 'Reflective abstraction' is formed through the coordination of the epistmmic subject's action while 'empirical abstraction' is formed by the characters of observable concrete object. The reason Piaget distinguished these two kinds of abstraction is that the foundation for the peculiar objectivity and inevitability can be taken from the coordination of the action which is shared by all the epistemic subjects. Moreover, because the mechanism of reflective abstraction, unlike empirical abstraction, does not construct a new operation by simply changing the result of the previous construction, but is forming re-construction which includes the structure previously constructed as a special case, the system which is developed by this mechanism is able to have reasonability constantly. The mechanism of the re-construction of the intellectual system through the reflective abstraction can be explained as continuous spiral alternance between the two complementary processes, 'reflechissement' and 'reflexion'; reflechissement is that the action moves to the higher level through the process of 'int riorisation' and 'thematisation'; reflexion is a process of 'equilibration'between the assimilation and the accomodation of the unbalance caused by the movement of the level. The operational learning principle of the theorists like Aebli who intended to embody Piaget's operational constructivism, attempts to explain the construction of the operation through 'internalization' of the action, but does not sufficiently emphasize the integration of the structure through the 'coordination' of the action and the ensuing discontinuous evolvement of learning level. Thus, based on the examination on the essential characteristic of the reflective abstraction and the mechanism, this study presents the principles of teaching and learning as following; $\circled1$ the principle of the operational interpretation of knowledge, $\circled2$ the principle of the structural interpretation of the operation, $\circled3$ the principle of int riorisation, $\circled4$ the principle of th matisation, $\circled5$ the principle of coordination, reflexion, and integration, $\circled6$ the principle of the discontinuous evolvement of learning level.

  • Since the data is collected from disparate sources in many actual data mining environments, it is common to have data values in different abstraction levels. This paper shows that such multiple abstraction levels of data can cause undesirable effects in decision tree classification. After explaining that equalizing abstraction levels by force cannot provide satisfactory solutions of this problem, it presents a method to utilize the data as it is. The proposed method accommodates the generalization/specialization relationship between data values in both of the construction and the class assignment phase of decision tree classification. The experimental results show that the proposed method reduces classification error rates significantly when multiple abstraction levels of data are involved.

  • Corporate level decision making with multiple decision makers in a consistent way is essential in Decision Support System. However, since the decision makers have different interests and knowledge, the models used by them are also different in their level of abstraction. This makes decision makers waste a lot of efforts for an integrated decision making. The purpose of this paper is to propose an integration mechanism so that collaborative decision making models may be used synthetically in multi-abstraction level. Models are classified as multimedia model, mathematical model, qualitative model, causal & directional model, causal model, directional model and relationship model according to the level of abstraction. The proposed integration mechanism consists of model interpretation phase. model transformation phase, and model integration phase. Specifically, the model transformation Phase is divided into (1) model tightening mode which gather information to make a model transformed into upper level model, and (2) model relaxing mode which makes lower level model. In the model integration phase, models of same level are to be integrated schematically. An illustrative M&A-decision example is given to show the possibility of the methodology.

  • The Means-end theory has successfully been applied in academics circles and is one of the qualitative methodologies, aiming at classifying into groups based on the specific values that they pursue. The more specific purposes of this study is to identify the relationship between the levels of abstraction and HVM(Hierarchical Value Map) and to identify the statistical changes in frequency activated cell and ladders among A-C-V. And lastly, to suggest the HVM according to the levels of abstraction. The subjects of this study includes the 100 hikers who joined the hiking at least once a year for 2007. The results of analysis show that as the level of abstraction goes up, the HVM itself is depicted more simple and the loss of information is also occurred. Consequently, the decision of levels of abstraction is should be made on the basis of objective validity.

  • We have many simulation constraints to meet as a modeled system becomes large and complex. Real-time simulations are the examples in that they are constrained by certain non-function constraints (e.g., timing constraints). In this paper, an enhanced hierarchical modeling methodology is proposed to efficiently deal with constraint-simulations. The proposed modeling method enhances hierarchical modeling methods to provide multi-resolution model. A simulation model is composed by determining the optimal level of abstraction that is guaranteed to meet the given simulation constraints. Four modeling activities are defined in the proposed method: 1) Perform the logical architectural design activity to produce a multi-resolution model, 2) Organize abstraction information of the multi-resolution model with AT (Abstraction Tree) structure, 3) Formulate the given constraints based on U (Integer Programming) approach and embrace the constraints to AT, and 4) Compose a model based on the determined level of abstraction with which the multi-resolution model can satisfy all given simulation constraints. By systematically handling simulation constraints while minimizing the modeler's interventions, we provide an efficient modeling environment for constraint-simulations.

  • Abstraction of geographic data within a spatial database context must deal with geometrical simplification, modification or maintenance of the integrity of features, spatial and aspatial data, topology within class, and relationships between classes. This research is to propose a method to abstract a spatial database into a high level database. This study refines operators to carry out the modifications required by the abstraction process in the spatial database. Then, a set of operator sequences (workflows) is suggested to specify operators required to abstract a given feature class and to arrange them in order. Finally, a prototype system is developed, based on rule management with a graphic user interface. When the abstraction process is implemented sequentially we demonstrate that a preferential ordering of operations improves efficiency and reduces loss and distortion in the information.

  • States explosion due to composition of spaces of data, temporal, and locational values is one of the well-known critical problems which cause difficulty in understanding and analysing real-time systems specified with state-based formal methods. In order to overcome this problem, this paper presents an abstraction method for state minimization based on an abstraction in system specification and an abstraction in system execution. The first is named the syntactic in system specification and an abstraction in system execution. The first is named the syntactic abstraction, through which the patterns of the unconditionally internalized computation and the repetition and selection structures are abstracted. The latter is named the semantic abstraction, through which the patterns of the execution space represented with data. Through the abstractions, the components of a system in specification and execution model is hierarchically organized. The system can be analyzed briefly in the upper level in an skeleton manner with low complexity. The system, however, can be abstraction method for the state minimization and the decrease in analysis complexity through the abstraction with examples.

  • Video abstraction is a process to pick up some important shots on a video, while the important shots might vary on the persons subjectivity. Previous works on video abstraction use only one low level feature to choose an important shot. This thesis proposes an abstraction scheme that selects a set of shots which simultaneously satisfies the desired features(or objective functions) of a good abstraction. Since the complexity of the computation to find a set of shots which maximizes the sum of object function values is $0({2^n})$, the proposed .scheme uses a simulated annealing based searching method to find the suboptimal value within a short period of time. Upon the experimental results on various videos, we could argue that the proposed abstraction scheme could produce a reasonable video abstraction. The proposed abstraction scheme used to build a digital video library.

  • The description of enterprise activities is the basis fur process improvement and information system building. To describe such activities, it is necessary to model the enterprise activities from the abstraction level to the implementation level in a stepwise and integrated form. For this reason, several modeling approaches have been proposed. However, most of them lacked the stepwise or integration aspects although some of them covered overall levels. This study proposes the hierarchical modeling approach for integrating the enterprise activity model from the abstraction level to the implementation level systematically. It is composed of five modeling levels such as function level, process level, task level, document workflow level, and event flow level. This study discusses the definition and characteristics of each level and compare our modeling frame with other modeling methodologies in case study.

  • The hydrogen abstraction reaction of $CF_3CH_2CHO$ + OH has been studied theoretically by dual-level direct dynamics method. Two stable conformers, trans- and cis-$CF_3CH_2CHO$, have been located, and there are four distinct OH hydrogen-abstraction channels from t-$CF_3CH_2CHO$ and two channels from c-$CF_3CH_2CHO$. The required potential energy surface information for the kinetic calculation was obtained at the MCG3-MPWB//M06-2X/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The rate constants, which were calculated using improved canonical transitionstate theory with small-curvature tunneling correction (ICVT/SCT) were fitted by a four-parameter Arrhenius equation. It is shown that the reaction proceeds predominantly via the H-abstraction from the -CHO group over the temperature range 200-2000 K. The calculated rate constants were in good agreement with the experimental data between 263 and 358 K.
