  • In this study, the effect of alkanolamine additives, 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) and 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (AMPD) on $CO_2$ absorption rate of $K_2CO_3$ solution and the formation of $KHCO_3$ crystals was investigated. The normalized $CO_2$ flux and the equilibrium $CO_2$ partial pressure were measured for 5 wt% additives and 30 wt% $K_2CO_3$ mixtures using a wetted-wall column unit at $40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$. Both additives showed the increased $CO_2$ absorption rate and lowered the equilibrium $CO_2$ partial pressure acting as promoters. Besides, AMPD which has two hydroxyl groups enhanced the formation of $KHCO_3$ solid product separated from the $CO_2$-rich solution from the results of batch cooling crystallization experiments.

  • To capture and recover carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), we impregnated honeycomb made of ceramic paper with $K_2CO_3$ and its absorption characteristics of $CO_2$ were investigated. The absorption amount of $CO_2$ on the honeycomb absorbent impregnated with $K_2CO_3$ was 13.8 wt% at a constant temperature ($70^{\circ}C$) and relative humidity (66%) condition. Because the absorption amount of $CO_2$ achieved almost the same loading ratio of $K_2CO_3$ (17.6 wt%), the absorption reaction of $CO_2$ by $K_2CO_3$ on the honeycomb absorbent seems to be going smoothly. In addition, $CO_2$ absorption breakthrough characteristics of the honeycomb absorbent were analyzed at the temperature range of $50{\sim}80^{\circ}C$, and the water vapor was fed to an absorption column before the feeding of $CO_2$ or simultaneously with $CO_2$. As a result, the absorption capacity of $CO_2$ was more enhanced using the water vapor supplying before $CO_2$ than that of simultaneous supplying. It was confirmed by temperature programmed desorption analysis that the $KHCO_3$ produced by the absorption reaction of $K_2CO_3$ and $CO_2$ is regenerated by the desorption of $CO_2$ at a temperature of about $128^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, a solid phase extraction method has been developed for the preconcentration and separation of the elements Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(II) and Pb(II) at trace levels by using a column packed with Amberlite XAD-1180 resin loaded with 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol (PAR) reagent. After preconcentrating, the metals retained on the column were eluted with 20 mL of 3 mol/L $HNO_3$ and then determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The factors affecting the recovery of the elements, such as pH, type and concentration of eluent, volume of sample and elution solution, and matrix components, were also ascertained. The recoveries of Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(II) and Pb(II) were found to be $99\;{\pm}\;4,\;97\;{\pm}\;3,\;95\;{\pm}\;3$ and $98\;{\pm}\;4$%, respectively, under the optimum conditions at 95% confidence level and the relative standard deviations found by analyzing of nine replicates were $\leq4.4$%. The preconcentration factors for Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(II) and Pb(II) were found as 75, 125, 50 and 75 respectively. The detection limits (DL, 3s/b) were 3.0 $\mu g/L$ for Cr(III), 1.25 $\mu g/L$ for Fe(III), 3.3 $\mu g/L$ for Co(II), and 7.2 $\mu g/L$ for Pb(II). The recoveries achieved by adding of metals at known concentrations to samples and the analysis results of Buffalo river sediment (RM 8704) show that the described method has a good accuracy. The proposed method was applied to tap water, stream water, salt and street dust samples.

  • The braced tube frame system, a combination of perimeter frame and bracing frame, is one of the systems used in tall buildings. Due to the implementation of this system in tall buildings and the high rigidity resulting from the use of general bracing, providing proper ductility while maintaining the strength of the structure when exposing to lateral forces is essential. Also, the high stress at the connection of the beam to the column may cause a sudden failure in the region before reaching the required ductility. The use of Reduced Beam Section connection (RBS connection) by focusing stress in a region away from beam to column connection is a suitable solution to the problem. Because of the fact that RBS connections are usually used in moment frames and not tested in tall buildings with braced tube frames, they should be investigated. Therefore, in this research, three tall buildings in height ranges of 20, 25 and 30 floors were modeled and designed by SAP2000 software, and then a frame in each building was modeled in PERFORM-3D software under two RBS-free system and RBS-based system. Nonlinear time history dynamic analysis is used for each frame under Manjil, Tabas and Northridge excitations. The results of the Comparison between RBS-free and RBS-based systems show that the RBS connections increased the absorbed energy level by reducing the stiffness and increasing the ductility in the beams and structural system. Also, by increasing the involvement of the beams in absorbing energy, the columns and braces absorb less energy.

  • A column preconcentration method with pulverized Amberlite XAD-4 loaded with bismuthiol I (BI) has been developed for the determination of trace Cd(II) and Cu(II) in various real samples by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Various experimental conditions, such as the size of XAD-4, adsorption flow rate, amount of bismuthiol I, stirring time for adsorbing bismuthiol I on XAD-4, pH of sample solution, amount of XAD-4- BI, desorption solvent, and desorption flow rate, were optimized. Also, the adsorption capacity and the adsorption rate of Cd(II) and Cu(II) on XAD-4-BI were investigated. The interfering effects of various concomitant ions were investigated, Bi(III), Sn(II) and Fe(III) were found to affect the determination. But the interference by these ions was completely eliminated by adjusting the amount of XAD-4-BI resin to 0.70 g, although the adsorption flow rate was slower. For Cd(II) our proposed technique obtained a dynamic range of 0.5-40 ng mL-1, a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9913, and a detection limit of 0.3 ng mL-1. For Cu(II), the corresponding values were 2.0-120 ng mL-1, 0.9921 and 1.02 ng mL-1. To validate this proposed technique, the aqueous samples (stream water, reservoir water, tap water and wastewater), the diluted brass sample and the plastic sample, as real samples, were used. Recovery yields of 91-103% were obtained. These measured data were not different from ICP-MS data at 95% confidence level. Our proposed method was also validated using rice flour CRM (normal, fortified) samples. From the results of our experiment, we found that the technique we present here can be applied to the determination of Cd(II) and Cu(II) in various real samples.

  • For the simultaneous methane recovery and $CO_2$-stripping, we have been developed dual vent auto circulation bubble lift column reactor, and evaluate optimum conditions for monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions as a $CO_2$ absorbent. At the 5 wt% MEA solution, we investigated the pH change during $CO_2$-stripping and absorption reaction, $CO_2$-stripping rate with reaction time, methane recovery efficiency for various inflow rates of air, $CO_2$-stripping rate for flow liquid over flow height, and $CO_2$-stripping dependency on the temperature of absolvent solutions. The suggested optimum conditions for $CO_2$ recovery with MEA in the dual vent auto circulation bubble lift column reactor were 40 mm over flow liquid height, 1.5 L/min of air inflow rate, and $25^{\circ}C$ of absorbent solution temperature.

  • In offshore environment, an accurate estimation of a wave-structure interaction has been an important issue for safe and cost effective design of fixed and floating offshore structures exposed to a harsh environment. In this study, a wave-structure interaction around a circular column was investigated with regular waves. To simulate 3D two-phase flow, open source computational fluid dynamics libraries, called OpenFOAM, were used. Wave generation and absorption in the wave tank were activated by the relaxation method, which implemented in a source term. To validate the numerical methods, generated Stokes 2nd-order wave profiles were compared with the analytic solution with deep water condition. From the validation test, grid longitudinal and vertical sizes for wave length and amplitude were selected. The simulated wave run-up and wave loads on the circular column were studied and compared with existing experimental data.

  • The objective of this paper is to examine the structural performance of steel moment-resisting frames on the various connection details of Seismic Wide-flanged Beam-to-Rectangular Steel Tube Column connections. Although compared to an H-shaped steel tube, a rectangular steel tube has many advantages and is more efficient, its application is limited due to the lack of experience in using it and the connection details. Existing steel moment connections using the rectangular steel tube are mainly used through plate diaphragms. The processing of construction of the rectangular steel tube is so complicated that it is hard to apply it in the field. In this study, the structural performance and the earthquake capacity of the connection details that do not cut the rectangular steel tube column were investigated. A comparative analysis of the strength, rigidity, and energy absorption capacity of the welded connection details using an end-plate and a haunch was also performed.
