In addition to lightweight and moldable characteristics, polymeric foams possess an excellent energy absorbing capability that can be utilize for a wide range of commercial applications, especially in the crashworthiness of the automobiles. The purpose of the present study is to develop experimental methodology to characterize the pressure dependent yield behavior of the energy absorbing polymeric foams. For the compression test in a triaxial stress sate, a specially designed device was placed in a hydraulic press to produce and control oil pressure. For the test material, the polyurethane foams of two different densities were used. The displacement of the specimen, the load subjected to the specimen, and oil pressure applied to the specimen were measured and controlled. Stress strain curves and yield stresses for the four different oil pressure were obtained. It was found from the present experiments that the polyurethane foams exhibited significant increases in yield stress with applied pressure or mean normal stress. Based on this observation, a yield criteria which included the effect of the stress invariant were established for the polymeric foams. The obtained experimental constants which constituted the pressure-dependent yield criterion were verified.
Designs for rockfall protection systems must consider rock and soil types, the angle of the slope, conditions on top and the toe of the affected area. Rockfall protection fence is installed to block for falling rock from cut slopes and this is one of the most common rockfall protection measures. The capability of the fence is provided that sum of capability of poly vinyl chloride coated wire mesh, steel support and wire rope respectively. But in some case, the rockfall protection fence was not supported rockfall energy less than total capability of the fence through the full scale rockfall tests. Therefore, the objectives of this paper are to indicate the problems of fence capability and to improve the design specifications for the fence.

Hydrogenation properties of Mg-Ni and Mg-Ti-Ni alloys were investigated by Pressure-Composition Isotherm (PCI) test. Those alloys were fabricated by a new alloying method, Rotation-Cylinder Method (RCM). The as-cast microstructure of Mg-10 mass% Ni alloy consists of an island-like hydride forming $\alpha$-Mg phase and the eutectic structure. After 350 cyclic tests, Mg-lO mass % Ni alloy was pulverized into fine particles of 100 nm. The fine particles, which have a large specific surface area, are highly reactive with hydrogen. However, extreme pulvehzation can separate Mg from $Mg_2Ni$ in the eutectic structure, so $Mg_2Ni$ of the eutectic structure cannot behave as a dissociated hydrogen supplier.

Bumper is designed to protect the automotive frame without damage at low velocity. Expanded polypropylene (EPP) foam is used in the bumper as an energy absorbing material. In order to exactly predict the energy absorbing performance of the foam material under impact loading condition, it is important to use high strain rate material properties. In this study, a new apparatus for dynamic compression tests was developed to investigate the high strain rate behavior of EPP foams. Three kinds of EPP foams which have different expansion ratios were tested to investigate the quasi-static and dynamic compression behavior. Quasi-static compressions were performed at low strain rates of 0.001/s, 0.1/s and 1/s. The dynamic compressions were carried out at high strain rates of 50/s and 100/s with the developed apparatus. It was observed that the EPP foam has significant strain rate effect as compared to quasi-static behavior.

Dye sensitized solar cells (DSC) are promising devices for inexpensive, nontoxic, transparent, and large-scale solar energy conversion. Generally thick $TiO_2$ nanoporous films act as efficient photoanodes with their large surface area for absorbing light. However, electron transport through nanoparticle networks causes the slowdown and the loss of electron transport because of a number of interparticle boundaries inside the conduction path. We have studied DSCs with precisely dimension-controlled $TiO_2$ nanotubes array as photoanode. $TiO_2$ nanotubes array is prepared by template-directed fabrication method with atomic layer deposition. Well-ordered nanotubes array provides not only large surface area for light absorbing but also direct pathway for electrons with minimalized grain boundaries. Large enlongated anatase grains in the nanotubes could enhance the conductivity of electrons, but also suppress the recombination with holes through defect sites during diffusion into the electrode. To study the effect of grain boundaries, we fabricated two kinds of nanotubes which have different grain sizes by controlling deposition conditions. And we studied electron conduction through two kinds of nanotubes with different grain structures. The solar cell performance was studied as a function of thickness and grain structures. And overall solar-to-electric energy conversion efficiencies of up to 7% were obtained.

The fracture toughness of three different kinds of epoxy-matrix composites containing the same volume fraction of reinforcement and the variation of fracture toughness of glass-carbon fiber/epoxy hybrid composites due to the change of test temperature and different glass fiber content were investigated in this study. Glass fiber/epoxy composite provided much higher fracture toughness than that of other composites because of the high strain at failure of glass fiber. Particularly the carbon fiber/epoxy composite exhibited the low fracture toughness caused by the low strain energy absorbing capacity of carbon fiber. And it was found that the strain at failure of reinforcement and interfacial delamination absorbing a significant amount of impact energy played an important role to increase fracture toughness of composites. The fracture toughness of the glass-carbon fiber hybrid composites increased with increasing the glass fiber content and decreased with raising the test temperature. The residual stress arising from the different thermal expansion between the matrix and reinforcement influenced the fracture toughness of composites.
Coupling systems under train's collision should take the impact by absorbing the impact energy caused from the collision, so the systems are very important parts for the safety of the trains. However, it is not easy to evaluate the performance of the system because it requires a huge testing facility, which is able to control the impact and to handle many safety issues. In this paper, test results are provided, which are obtained from collision tests of a single train having a coupling system in the front, and the results are analyzed in order to understand the characteristics and the dynamic behaviors of energy absorbing materials in the coupling system, such as a hydraulic buffer, and two rubber buffers. The results show that the force of each component could be empirically described by the compression displacement and velocity. The analyzed results will be applied to simulation models, and advanced studies wouuld be available if the simulation models are well validated with the test results.
To produce a strengthened glass, single ion exchange properties such as three-point bend strength and residual stress were investigated in soda-lime-silicate substrate glass for display use. The present work showed that the maximum value of strength was 62.5${\times}$10$\sub$6/ kg/㎡ after, the two-step single ion exchange process at 470$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h and 450$^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. As the result of the fracture analysis after bending test, the residual stress on the fractured surface of the strengthened glass increased the flexibility by means of absorbing the elastic deformation energy in the glass. Also, the effects of absorbing the elastic deformation energy were analysed by curvature change, number of multiple crack branches and brittleness.

Crashworthiness design is of special interest in automotive industry and in the transportation safety field to ensure the vehicle structural integrity and more importantly the occupant safety in the event of the crash. Front side assembly is one of the most important energy absorbing components in relating to the crashworthiness design of vehicle. The structure and shape of the front side assemblies are different depending on automakers. Thus, it is not easy to grab an insight on designer's intention when you glance at a new front side member without experiences. In this paper, we have performed the explicit nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis on the front side assembly of a passenger car to identify the mechanical roles of each part of the assembly and to enhance the absorbing energy from the viewpoint of reverse engineering.
The experimental study was conducted to optimize the system dissipating properly heat from the in-situ solar panel installed on the roof. For this purpose, six 12-Watt panels, which were consisted of the different design conditions such as containing phase change material(PCM), changing the array of the aluminum fin and honeycomb at the back of the panel, were tested. PCM, which had $44^{\circ}C$ melting point, was chosen in this study. In order to enhance absorbing and expelling heatin PCM, profiled aluminum fin was placed either inward oroutward from the panel. Furthermore, Aluminum honeycomb is imbedded in the back container to find if it would improve the thermal conductivity of PCM. During the experiment, there were ranged to $26^{\circ}C\sim32^{\circ}C$ for outdoor temperature and $700W/m^2\sim1000W/m^2$ for irradiance. As a result, the solar panel, combined with honeycomb and outward fins with PCM instead of placing the fins inward, is showing the best performance in terms of controling panel temperature and its efficiency.
