  • Friction and wear tests have been performed on nylon, acetal resin, and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), in reciprocating dry sliding conditions against steel discs. According to the results, acetal resin showed the lowest wear rates and PTFE exhibited the lowest friction coefficient. The prominent wear mechanisms found were adhesion and abrasion.

  • We measured the simultaneous, time-resolved spectra of photon emission, electron emission, and frictional force during the abrasion single crystal MgO with a diamond stylus in vacuum. phE and EE signal can be detected with millisecond resolution during the wear of a single crystal MgO substrate with a diamond stylus. The emissions and wear behavior are strong function of surface condition, load and stylus velocity. Measurement on annealed vs as-received material show that the luminescence is primarily due to deformation, and the electron emission is primarily due to fracture. These emissions provide insight into the processes responsible for catastrophic failure of ceramics in wear applications.

The deterioration characteristics of ballast is one of the most important factor in the dynamic behaviour of track and its life. In this paper abrasion/breakage characteristics of ballast is studied to predict the effect of physical ballast characteristics on ballast track. To reveal deterioration characteristics of ballast, the field test were carried out. The deterioration characteristics, studied in this paper, is applied to the dynamic behaviour of track in various conditions.

  • This article aims at investigating the effect of applied load and sliding speed on wear behavior of thermally spraryed STS316 coating. STS316 coatings were fabricated by flame spray process according to optimal parameters on steel substrates. Dry sliding wear tests were performed on STS316 coating using four different applied load as 10, 15, 20 and 25 N and four different sliding speed as 15, 30, 45 and 60 rpm. Wear behavior on worn surface was investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy disperive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS). The dominant wear mechanism of STS316 coating under low applied load and sliding speed was oxidation on worn surface. However, under high applied load and sliding speed the principal wear mechanism was abrasion on oxidation film and damage of oxidation film.

  • In recent years, the tribological behavior of coated ceramic material has been the issue of much interest. Particularly, the understanding of the tribological performance of thin film under light load is important for its potential in applications of MEMS. The friction and wear behavior of ceramic material that occur at light load depends on several factors such as surface roughness, contact area and material properties. In this work, the tribological behavior of coated silicon under light load and low speed was investigated. Particularly, the effects of coated materials, humidity and undulated surface were also studied. The results show that the effect of humidity on fiction was influenced by the apparent area of contact between the two surfaces. Also both adhesive and abrasive wear occurred depending on the sliding condition. Finally, undulations on the silicon wafer were found to be effective in trapping wear particles and resulted in the reduction of friction.

  • Machines that normally operate under fluid film lubricated condition also experience surface damage. This is largely due to the failure of the lubricant film which leads to boundary lubrication. Thus, it is important to have a good understanding of boundary lubrication behavior. In this paper the major tribological parameters that influence the boundary lubrication properties are evaluated. It is shown that disk roughness, hardness and normal load affect the friction and wear of metals in boundary lubrication. Also, the mechanism of surface damage is attributed to abrasion and wear particle interaction.

  • The protection of steel surfaces against wear is a practical problem far agricultural, mining and manufacturing industries. Commercial processes are available in which a hard tungsten carbides rich steel layer is formed on the surface of carbon steel digging, drilling and gouging tools to improve their wear resistance. The nature of the interaction of the tungsten carbide with the steel matrix is important in determining the wear and corrosion properties of the resulting metal matrix composites(MMC). In the study, WC-12%Co/low carbon steel MMC overlays have been prepared by gas metal arc welding(GMAW) according to size of WC-12%Co grits. The characteristics wear resistance and wear mechanism have been investigated in relation to the experiment conditions each other. After MMC overlay had been tested by rubber wheel abrasion test, it was known that MMC overlay has a excellent wear resistance. Fe$_{6}$W$_{6}$C carbides of matrix in overlays were not important to restrain rubber wheal abrasion wear. Wear loss is proportioned to a applied load according to time. On the case of low load, wear occurred severely in the matrix of overlay more than WC-12%Co grit, on the contrary it is reverse on the case of high load because of fracture of WC-12%Co grits.its.

  • The tribological properties of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) filled with two kinds of carbon black filler were examined. Different types of Semi-Reinforcing Furnace (SRF), and High Abrasion Furnace (HAF) blacks were used as filler material to test the influence of carbon black particle size on the friction and wear of NBR. Results from tribological tests using a ball on disk method showed that the smaller HAF particles were more effective for reducing the wear of NBR during frictional sliding. The hardness, elastic modulus at 100% elongation, and elongation at break were measured to examine the correlation between the effects of carbon black on the mechanical and tribological properties of the NBR specimens. The wear tracks of the NBR specimens were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The wear tracks for NBR with different ratios of SRF and HAF showed clearly different abrasion patterns. Mechanisms for the friction and wear behavior of NBR with different sizes of carbon black filler were proposed using evidence from wear track observation, as well as the mechanical and tribological test results.

  • The disposal of polythene waste and fly ash is causing serious threat to the environment. Aim of this study is to decrease environmental pollution by using polythene waste and fly ash in concrete. In this study, cement was partially replaced with 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% fly ash (by weight) and plastic waste was added in shredded form at 0.6% by weight of concrete. The specimens were prepared for the concrete mix of M25 grade and water to cementitious material ratio (w/c) was maintained as 0.45. Fresh concrete property like workability was examined during casting the specimens. Hardened properties were found out by carrying out the experimental work on cubes, cylinders and beams which were cast in laboratory and their behavior under test were observed at 7 & 28 days for compressive strength and at 28 days for density, flexural strength, dynamic modulus of elasticity, abrasion resistance, water permeability and impact resistance. Overall results of this study show that addition of 0.6% (by weight of the concrete) plastic waste with 10% (by weight of cement) replacement of cement by fly ash result an improvement in properties of the concrete than conventional mix.
