  • We study tidal disruption and subsequent mass fallback process for stars approaching supermassive black holes on bound orbits, by performing three dimensional Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulations with a pseudo-Newtonian potential. We find that the mass fallback rate decays with the expected -5/3 power of time for parabolic orbits, albeit with a slight deviation due to the self-gravity of the stellar debris. For eccentric orbits, however, there is a critical value of the orbital eccentricity, significantly below which all of the stellar debris is bound to the supermassive black hole. All the mass therefore falls back to the supermassive black hole in a much shorter time than in the standard, parabolic case. The resultant mass fallback rate considerably exceeds the Eddington accretion rate and substantially differs from the -5/3 power of time. We also show that general relativistic precession is crucial for accretion disk formation via circularization of stellar debris from stars on moderately eccentric orbits.

  • A microcapsule for drug delivery was successfully produced by utilizing the flow-through droplet-based supramolecular self-assembly in a crossed microchannel network. The PS-b-PMMA block copolymer synthesized atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was initially formed as microdroplets and after the evaporation process it turned to spherical capsule by polymer self-assembly of the micro domains. The characteristics were studied using various analysis methods.

  • In view of the circular geometry of the Serra da Cangalha impact crater, we have carried out a 3D forward modeling computation for twenty-five MT data in order to obtain the 3D resistivity forward model for the crater region. The 3D resistivity forward model revealed a five-layer model, showing a significant reduction in the basement resistivity. We suggest that this, perhaps, could be due to the structural disturbances that have been caused by the meteorite impact on the crater about 220 million years ago resulting in brecciation, fracturing, alteration and shocked zone filled with fluids. Also, the sensitivity analysis of the 3D model chosen indicates that 3D models having a crater diameter greater than 151 are inconsistent with our data because the 3D model responses are very sensitive to changes in the diameter beyond 15 km. This analysis also reveals that, the depth limits (for the 3D body) causing the anisotropic effects seen on some of our apparent resistivity curves maximally does not extend beyond 1.2 km depth.

  • The most commercially and academically advanced catalysts of late transition metals are diimine complexes based on Pd(II)/Ni(II) and bis(imino)pyridyl complexes based on Fe(II)/Co(II). It is well known that the former systems yield branched polyethylenes and the latter linear PEs. In this presentation, effect of extremely bulky ligands with electron withdrawing/donating substituents at a remote position from Ni(II) metal center and of using multi-nuclear homo or hetero multi-metal on the ethylene polymerization is to be paged.

  • The synthesis of an octafunctional resorcinarene based initiator for nitroxide mediated polymerization and its ability to yield random star copolymers of styrene and methyl methacrylate is studied. The effect of the initiator conformations towards its activity and the conditions that permit the formation of well-defined star block copolymers is also investigated in detail. The characterization of the initiator and the polymers were carried out by various spectro-analytical techniques. Well-defined random copolymers were obtained with controlled molecular weight and low PDI depending on the monomer feed.

  • The incidence of acute pancreatitis (AP) has increased in the pediatric population over the past few decades and it stands to follow that the complications of severe AP, including symptomatic pancreatic fluid collections (PFCs) will increase as well. In adults, the therapeutic options for this situation have undergone a dramatic evolution from mainly surgical approaches to less invasive endoscopic approaches, mainly endoscopic ultrasound-guided transmural drainage (EUS-TD) followed be direct endoscopic necrosectomy if needed. This has proven safe and effective in adults; however, this approach has not been well studied or reported in pediatric populations. Here we demonstrate that EUS-TD seems to offer a safe, efficacious and minimally invasive approach to the management of large PFCs in pediatric patients by reviewing two representative cases at our institution.

  • An experimental investigation was carried out on the strength and behavior plain and fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete beam column joints and the results were compared with plain and steel fiber reinforced conventional concrete beam column joints. The volume fraction of fibers used was 0.5%. A total of six Geopolymer concrete joints and four conventional concrete joints were cast and tested under reversed cyclic loading to evaluate the performance of the joints. First crack load, ultimate load, energy absorption capacity, energy dissipation capacity stiffness degradation and moment-curvature relation were evaluated from the test results. The comparison of test results revealed that the strength and behavior of plain and fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete beam column joints are marginally better than corresponding conventional concrete beam column joints.

  • The performance of steel fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete beam column joints under cyclic loading was investigated. The volume fraction of fibers considered were 0.25% (19.62 kg/㎥), 0.5% (39.24 kg/㎥), 0.75% (58.86 kg/㎥) and 1% (78.48 kg/㎥). A total of fifteen specimens were prepared and tested under reverse cyclic loading. Test results were analyzed with respect to first crack load, ultimate load, energy absorption capacity, energy dissipation capacity, stiffness degradation and load deflection behavior. Test results revealed that the addition of steel fibers enhanced the performance of geopolymer concrete beam column joints significantly. The joints were analyzed using finite element software ANSYS. The analytical results were found to compare satisfactorily with the experimental values.

  • Escherichia coli biofilm, reported to be produced in the human intestine causing a significant health risk, was successfully grown on transwell$^{(R)}$. This biofilm layer was identified by crystal violet staining and prepared for the in vitro E. coli biofilm system which can be used to screen for inhibitors. The biofilm formation did not show a change in transepithelial electrical resistance values. Furthermore, rhodamine 123 staining showed that the dye did not pass through the membrane once biofilm was formed.
