  • In the present study, the characteristics of laser ultrasound in the ablation regime are investigated using simulations and experiments. The laser ultrasonic technique has been recognized as a noncontact method in the field of nondestructive tests (NDTs). In hostile environments (such as hot temperatures), this method has various advantages over the conventional contact ultrasonic method. In particular, in the ablation regime, the laser ultrasonic technique is suitable for inspecting internal defects because of the high amplitude and directivity of the longitudinal wave. In this paper, a simulation model for laser ultrasound in the ablation regime was developed. This model was subsequently applied to a defective specimen using the B-scan method to locate defects. Finally, we performed an experimental test to verify the simulation results. Consequently, the simulation demonstrated good agreement with the experimental test.

  • Radioactive Oxides are formed on the surface of the primary equipment in a nuclear power plant. In order to remove the oxide film that is formed on the surfaces of the equipment, chemical and physical decontamination technologies are used. The disadvantage of traditional technologies is that they produce secondary radioactive wastes. Therefore, in this study, the short-pulsed laser eco-friendly technology was used in order to reduce production of the secondary radioactive wastes. They were also used to minimize the damages that were caused on the base material and to remove the contaminated oxide film. The study was carried out using a Stainless steel 304 specimen that was coated with nickel-ferrite particles. Further, the laser source was selected with two different wavelengths. Furthermore, the depth of the coating layer was analyzed using a 3D laser microscope by changing the laser ablation conditions. Based on the analysis, the optimal conditions of ablation were determined using a 1064nm short-pulsed laser ablation technique in order to remove the radioactively contaminated oxide film from the irradiated stainless steel surface.

  • During the last ten years the new interruption techniques, which use the arc energy itself to increase the pressure inside a chamber by the PTFE nozzle ablation, have displaced the puffer circuit breakers due to reduced driving forces and better maintainability. In this paper, we have investigated the thermal flow characteristics inside a thermal puffer type gas circuit breaker by solving the Wavier-Stokes equations coupled with Maxwell's equations for considering all instabilities effects such as turbulence and Lorentz forces by transient arc plasmas. These relative inexpensive computer simulations might help the engineer research and design the new interrupter in order to downscale and uprating the GIS integral.

  • The material processing by using ultrashort pulse laser, in recently, is actively applying into the micro machining and nano-machining technology since ultrashort pulse has so faster than the time which the electrons energy absorbing photon energy is transmitted to surrounding lattice-phonon that it has many advantages in point of machining. The micro machining of metallic thin film on the plain glass is widely used in the fields such as mask repairing for semiconductor, fabrication of photonic crystal, MEMS devices and data storage devices. Therefore, it is important to secure the machining technology of the sub-micron size. In this research, we set up the machining system by using ultrashort pulse laser and conduct on the Cr 200nm thin film ablation experiments of spot and line with the variables such as energy, pulse number, speed, and so on. And we observed the characteristics of surrounding heat-affected zone and by-products appeared in critical energy density and higher energy density through SEM, and also examined the machining features between in He gas atmosphere which make pulse change minimized by nonlinear effect and in the air. Finally, the pit size of 0.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter and the line width of 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ could be obtained.

  • Pressure risc is an important design factor and affects significantly on the characteristics of gas circuit breakers. For self-blast circuit breakers, the nozzle ablation plays important role in pressure-building up and should be properly considered for the accurate calculation. In this paper, the nozzle ablation is treated as a boundary condition and the pressure is calculated from mass fractions of PTFE and SF6. The amount of the ablated mass of a nozzle is assumed to be proportional to the are energy and the area of nozzle surface that directly touches arc. The calculation result is compared with measured data and shows good agreement with it.

  • The use of Duplex stainless steel as a thermo-implant categorizes into two clinical applications: hyperthermia and thermal ablation or destruction. The goal of hyperthermia is to destroy the heat-sensitive abnormal cells and minimize normal cell death maintaining heat between $42^{\circ}C$ and $46^{\circ}C$. Thermal ablation takes place when the local tissue temperature increases greater than $46^{\circ}C$. This elevated temperature denatures protein irreversibly resulting cellular death. The author introduced several thermo-implants such as thermo-rod, thermo-stent, thermo-coil and thermoacupuncture-needle. Those thermo-implants are made of duplex stainless steel which can produce regulated heat by itself within an induction magnetic field. Thermal ablation characteristics of the thermo-rod on tumor hyperthermia depend on configurations of the thermo-rods and the magnitude of the induction magnetic strength. The exothermic properties of the thermo-implants can be characterized using the calorimetric test and the heat affected zone(HAZ) analyses in vitro. Thermal radiation studies using thermo-coils and thermo-stents show the capability of the occlusion of animal blood vessels and inhibiting the proliferation of the abnormal smooth muscle cell growth and inflammatory cell reactions maintaining the heat between $42^{\circ}C$ and $46^{\circ}C$ minimizing a normal cell death in the study on external iliac artery of the New Zealand White (NZW) rabbit. Thermal stimulation study using thermo-acupuncture needles suggests the potential applications of the automated acupunctural therapies.

  • Nanostructured materials arecurrently receiving much attention because of their unique structural andphysical properties. Research has been stimulated by the envisagedapplications for this new class of materials in electronics, optics, catalysisand magnetic storage since the properties derived from nanometer-scalematerials are not present in either isolated molecules or micrometer-scalesolids. This study presents the experimental results derived fromthe various functional materials processed in nano-scale using pulsed laserablation, since those materials exhibit new physical phenomena caused by thereduction dimensionality. This presentation consists of three mainparts to consider in pulsed laser ablation (PLA) technique; first nanocrystallinefilms, second, nanocolloidal particles in liquid, and third, nanocoating fororganic/inorganic hybridization. Firstly, nanocrystalline films weresynthesized by pulsed laser deposition at various Ar gas pressures withoutsubstrate heating and/or post annealing treatments. From the controlof processng parameters, nanocystalline films of complex oxides and non-oxidematerials have been successfully fabricated. The excellentcapability of pulsed laser ablation for reactive deposition and its ability totransfer the original stoichiometry of the bulk target to the deposited filmsmakes it suitable for the fabrication of various functionalmaterials. Then, pulsed laser ablation in liquid has attracted muchattention as a new technique to prepare nanocolloidal particles. Inthis work, we represent a novel synthetic approach to directly producehighly-dispersed fluorescent colloidal nanoparticles using the PLA from ceramicbulk target in liquid phase without any surfactant. Furthermore, novel methodbased on simultaneous motion tracking of several individual nanoparticles isproposed for the convenient determination of nanoparticle sizedistributions. Finally, we report that the GaAs nanocrystals issynthesized successfully on the surface of PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate)microspheres by modified PLD technique using a particle fluidizationunit. The characteristics of the laser deposited GaAs nanocrytalswere then investigated. It should be noted that this is the first successfultrial to apply the PLD process nanocrystals on spherical polymermatrices. The present process is found to be a promising method fororganic/inorganic hybridization.
