This study was carrie out to develop practical feed formulation for juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus hannai). Three replicate groups of abalone averaging 120mg were fed one of 7 isoproteic (34%) and isolipidic (5.3%) dlets containing various practical ingredients such as casein, fish meal, soybean meal, cottonseed meal, Undaria powder, wheat flour, spirulina, starch, and/or wheat germ meal for 4 months. The prices (5,000~800 won/kg diet) of these experimental diets were adjusted by adding different levels and ratios of practival ingredients. In addition, these experimental diets were compared with commercial feed or natural food (Undaria). Weight gain, soft body weight and shell growth of abalone fed experimental diets with low prices (2,500~800 won/kg diet) and commercial diet were significantly higher than those of abalone fed experimental diet with high price (5,000 won/kg diet)and natural food (P<0.05). The results indicate that our economic formulation (about 1,000 won/kg diet) can be useful for juvenile abalone.
A 10-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of several yeasts with or without chemical treatment (protoplasted) in formulated diets on growth and body composition of juvenile abalone(Haliotis discus hanai). There replicate groups of the abalone average weighing 210 mg were fed one of eight isonitrogenous (30%) and isolipidic (4.4%) diets containing 3% Kluyveromyces fragilis protoplasted K. fragilis Candida utilis protoplasted C. utilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae protoplasted S. cerevisiae or brewer's yeast. In addition these formulated diets were compared with commercial diet. Survival rate and proximate analysis of soft whole body of abalone were not significantly affected by the different dietary yeasts and commercial diet (P>0.05) Body weight gain and soft body weight control diet and diets containing S. cerevisiae or brewer's yeast (P<0.05) Shell length of abalone fed yeast and commercial diet (P<0.05) Th results suggest that protoplasted K. fragilis as an additive in this formulated diet can improve weight gain of abalone.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of three different formulated diets and macroalgae(Undaria) on growth and body comoposition among juvenile Haliotis discus, H. sieboldii and H. discus hannail. Three replicate groups among the three species abalones average weighing 0.31g were fed one of one experimental diet, two commercial diets and Undaria for 9 weeks. The three formulated diets produced significantly (P<0.05) greated body and shell growth than Undaria within same abalone species. Survival rates (97~99%) of H. discus and H. sieboldii were higher than that (74~77%) of H. discus hannai. Whereas different diets had no significantly (P>0.05) distincitive effect on survival within each three different abalone species. Moisture of abalone soft body in final stage reduced compared to those of abalone in initial stage in H. discus and H. discus hannai. Regardless of diet, abalone soft body revealed significantly (P<0.05) increased protein and decreased ash at the end of feeding trial in all three abalone species. This study indicate that all three different formulated diets used in this experiment could be a practical diet in three abalone species.
A feeding experiment was conducted using juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) to investigate the optimum level of supplemental vitamin and/or mineral premixes in a formulated diet for practical feed formulation. Three replicate groups of abalone averaging 100 mg were fed the diets containing different levels of vitamin premix ($0\%,\;0.5\%,\;1.0\%$ and $2\%$) and /or mineral premix($0\%,\;2\%,\;4\%$ and $6\%$) for 4 months. Survival rates of abalone showed no distinctive trend by the levels of dietary vitamin premixes. Weight gain, shell growth and soft body weight of abalone were not significantly affected by the different dietary vitamin and/or mineral premixes (P>0,05). Moisture, protein and lipid contents of soft body were influenced by experimental diets (P<0.05) but these differences also had no definite trends by levels of vitamin and/or mineral premixes. These data indicate that supplemental vitamin or mineral premix is not needed in this formulated diet, therefore price of diet for juvenile abalone could be reduced.
In other aquaculture species, large improvements in growth have been achieved through selective breeding. Ezo abalone(Haliotis discus hannai) and disk abalone(H. discus discus) are major aquatic animals cultured in Asia, but selective breeding for the promotion of growth with these abalones has not been actively pursued. Recently significant efforts are being made to promote production of these species through selective breeding in Korea. The aims of this work were to estimate the general genetic parameters, heritabilities, and genetic and phenotypic correlations on growth-related traits at 1-year old in two Korean abalone subspecies, H. discus hannai and H. discus discus, by using multiple trait animal model. The data were collected from the records of 1,504 individuals produced from 22 sires and 26 dams in H. discus hannai and 297 individuals produced from 5 sires and 6 dams in H. discus discus, which evaluated by the Genetics and Breeding Research Center, National Fisheries Research & Development Institute(NFRDI). Genetic parameters were estimated for these abalone subspecies raised in Bukjeju branch, NFRDI, from May 20, 2004 to May 16, 2005, respectively. The heritability estimates obtained from restricted maximum likelihood(REML) were higher than expected, ranging from 0.40 to 0.43 for growth traits shell length, shell width and body weight in H. discus hannai and from 0.26 to 0.51 in H. discus discus, respectively. The heritabilities for shell shape and condition factor were lower than others of growth traits such as ranging from 0.09 to 0.19 in H. discus hannai and from 0.10 to 0.23 in H. discus discus, respectively. Genetic and phenotypic were > 0.93 between shell parameters and weight in two abalone species, respectively, indicating that breeding for weight gains could be successfully achieved by selecting for shell length.
The main aim of this study was to develop carrot soups with fishery products, which is improved from traditional gruel of Cheju island. For this the optimal procedure and ingredient mixing ratio for making basic carrot soup was determined through the instrumental measurement, the sensory evaluation and the nutrient analysis, and then the carrot-fishery soups were prepared by mixing the fishery products from Cheju island. The results were as follows: The optimal procedure for making basic carrot soup was to saute the sliced carrots and soaked rices with the sesame oil for 5 min, add the water, bring to a boil for 6 min, simmer for 15 min, then puree the soup. The optimal ingredient mixing ratio in the basic carrot soup was carrot 300 g: rice 45 g: water 900 $m\ell$: sesame oil 15 $m\ell$: salt 5 g. For preparing carrot-fishery soups were the optimal fishery products mixing ratio i) 30% tile fish or crab, ii) prawn, abalone, top shell, or ear shell 20%, iii) sea urchin 15%, iv) fusiform or gulf weed 5%. The order of sensory evaluation scores, on a 5-point scale, were sea urchin, crab > top shell, tile fish > abalone, ear shell > prawn > coral fish > fusiform, gulf weed. Nutrient composition analysis showed that vitamin A was 5 times higher in carrot soup than in pumpkin soup. Sensory evaluation scores show that carrot soup was prepared to pumpkin soup. A portion (200 g) of the soup would provide 144% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A. The results of this work indicate that an acceptable carrot-fishery soups of better nutritional and sensory values than pumpkin soup can be prepared.

Harmful shell-boring species of the genus Polydora (Polychaeta: Spionidae) were frequently reported from commercially important mollusk species in Korea, Japan and China. The traditional approach based on the morphological characteristics showed limitations for species discrimination among shell-boring species. Therefore, DNA barcoding was adopted to identify Polydora species using molecular markers. Two Polydora species (P. haswelli and P. hoplura) in abalone shells were reported from our previous molecular phylogenetic study. In this study, we additionally reported the presence of shell-boring Polydora haswelli in commercially sold shellfish. The taxon-specific cox1 marker used in this study successfully allowed the isolation of P. haswelli from cockle Scapharca subcrenata, mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, oyster Crassostrea gigas and scallop Argopecten irradians. Polydora hoplura was not found in these shellfish species. The genetic variations were found on the intraspecific level of P. haswelli and the same genotype was also detected in different shellfish species. This result can provide information on a new host and accurate parasitic Polydora species. Moreover, this report can be used as the biodiversity data of Polydora species on the invasion and transition of harmful Polydora species in mollusk aquaculture farms.
This study describes biological environmental characteristics in natural habitats of Haliotis diversicolor in the coastal area of Sungsanpo located in the eastern coast of Jeju-do, Korea. The field survey was monthly conducted from May 2006 to February 2007. H. diversicolor, sea urchin, turban shell and marine algae were collected by two divers using SCUBA. The species composition of demersal fishes were seasonally investigated by fish traps in 2007. During the study period, more than 67% of H. diversicolor and sea urchin were found in the depth shallower than 5 m, and more than 64% of turban shell were found in the depth deeper than 3 m. The dominant algal species in May were generally Undaria pinnatifida, Ecklonia cava, Sargassum. spp. and coralline algae. Most of demersal fishes collected by the fish traps were wrasses which have been reported as a major predator of young abalone.

Inbreeding depression may be an avoidable phenomenon for abalone culture. However, only a few studies were carried out on inbreeding depression. In the present study, to demonstrate inbreeding depression in growth trait of Pacific abalone, H. discus hannai, inbreeding and outbreeding families were produced in 2010. Inbred and outbred families from each experiment were reared in same tank until 10 month for the same breed environment. The individual of inbred and outbred were distinguished by paternity test using microsatellite DNA. The shell length between inbred and outbred families was compared. At the results, significantly higher shell length was observed in the outbred families at 10 mon (P < 0.05). These results indicate that inbreeding depression is obviously observed in growth traits in the first generation of full-sib family of the H. discus hannai.

This study was conducted to estimate the genetic improvements by selection criteria using the genetic parameters and breeding values for population of abalone Haliotis discus hannai. Genetic parameters and breeding values were estimated using all measurement data of growth traits (shell length, shell width and total weight) at 18 and 30 months old after artificial fertilization for 3,029 individuals produced in April 2014. Growth traits all exhibited moderate heritability (0.253-0.354). So it is considered that family selection will be more advantageous than individual selection. It was found that a higher genetic improvement could be expected when selecting the top 10% based on the breeding values of total weight rather than other traits. In particular, a higher genetic improvement could be expected when selecting the top 10% at 30 months old than 18 months old after artificial fertilization. This seems to be because the selection differential and heritability were higher at the 30 months old. Therefore, by estimating genetic parameters and breeding values of a population for production of the next generations by stage of growth, if they are used properly in selection and mating according to the improvement direction, it is considered that more breeding effects can be expected.
