  • Gas explosion accidents could cause a catastrophe. we need specialized and systematic accident investigation techniques to shed light on the cause and prevent similar accidents. In this study, we had performed LPG explosion simulation using AUTODYN which is the commercial explosion program and predicted the damage characteristics of the structures by LNG explosive power. In the first step, we could get LPG's physical and chemical explosion properties by calculation using TNT equivalency method. And then, by applying TNT equivalency value about the explosion limit concentration of LPG on the 2D-AUTODYN simulation, we could get the explosion pressure wave profiles (explosion pressure, explosion velocity, etc.). In the last step, we performed LPG explosion simulation by applying to the explosion pressure wave profiles as the input data on the 3D-AUTODYN simulation. As a result, we had performed analyzing of the explosion characteristics of LPG in accordance with concentration through the 3D-AUTODYN simulation in terms of the explosion pressure behavior and structure destruction and damage behavior. The analyses showed that the generated stresses of the structures were lower than the compressive strengths in cases 1(two lane) and 2(four lane), while the generated stress in case 3(six lane) was 8.68e3 kPa, which exceeded the compressive strength of 5.89e3 kPa.

  • It is of great importance to determine the optimum cutter spacing in TBM. In order to determine the optimum cutter spacing, a series of cutting tests by linear cutting machine (LCM) are performed with changing cutter space. This study showed that a numerical method for estimating the optimum cutter spacing could be developed by AUTODYN-3D in order to overcome the limitation of LCM test. By using this method, the optimum cutter spacing of Hwangdeung granite was estimated.

  • Using the dynamic explicit program NET3D, oblique impact between long rod penetrator and metallic plate was analyzed. Compared with an experiment and AUTODYN-3D analysis result, the accuracy of NET3D program was examined. It was proved that NET3D program could analyze comparatively exactly oblique impact phenomenon between long rod penetrator and metallic plate. The final deformed configuration of penetrator predicted by NET3D program was more close to experimental result than commercial program AUTODYN-3D. But, in order to increase the reliability of NET3D program in the simulation of tensile fracture phenomenon, the additional research is required.

  • Penetrator with enhanced lateral effect (PELE) is a novel projectile that does not require dynamite and a fuse. It comprises a high-density jacket that is closed at its rear end and filled with a low-density filling material. To study the explosion characteristics of PELE using AUTODYN-3D code, the calculation models of the projectile body and the bullet target were developed and the process of penetrating an aluminum-2024 alloy target using PELE was simulated. The scattering characteristics after PELE penetrated the aluminum-2024 alloy target were studied for different filling materials. The explicit finite element analysis of PELE fragmentation was implemented with the stochastic failure criterion in AUTODYN-3D code. As the filling expanded, the fragments gained velocity and dispersed laterally, increasing the damage area considerably. The number and shape of PELE fragments differed depending on the impact pressure of the filling that fragmented during the penetration and lateral dispersion processes.

  • Hydrogen is a fuel having the highest energy compared with other common fuels. This means hydrogen is a clean energy source for the future. However, using hydrogen as a fuel has implication regarding carrier and storage issues, as hydrogen is highly inflammable and unstable gas susceptible to explosion. Explosions resulting from hydrogen-air mixtures have already been encountered and well documented in research experiments. However, there are still large gaps in this research field as the use of numerical tools and field experiments are required to fully understand the safety measures necessary to prevent hydrogen explosions. The purpose of this present study is to develop and simulate 3D numerical modelling of an existing hydrogen gas station in Jeonju by using handheld LiDAR and Ansys AUTODYN, as well as the processing of point cloud scans and use of cloud dataset to develop FEM 3D meshed model for the numerical simulation to predict peak-over pressures. The results show that the Lidar scanning technique combined with the ANSYS AUTODYN can help to determine the safety distance and as well as construct, simulate and predict the peak over-pressures for hydrogen refueling station explosions.

  • Numerical simulation on rock cutting by a TBM disc cutter was carried out using SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) code. AUTODYN3D, a commercial software program based on finite element method, was used in this study. The three-dimensional geometry of a disc cutter and a rock specimen were modeled by Lagrange and SPH code respectively. The numerical simulation was carried out for Hwangdeung granite for 10 different cutting conditions. The results of the numerical simulation, i.e. the relation between cutter force and failure behavior, had a good agreement with those from LCM test. The cutter forces measured in the numerical simulation had 10% deviation from the LCM test results. Moreover, the optimum cutter spacing was almost identical with the experimental results. These results indicate that SPH code can be successfully used had applicability for simulation on rock cutting by a TBM disc cutter. However, further study on Lagrange-SPH coupled modelling would be necessary to reduce the computation time.

  • The present work have been developed the interpretation processor including the behavior of material failure and the separation phenomena under transient dynamic loading (the operation of explosive bolt) using AUTODYN V4.3, SoildWork 2003 and TrueGrid V2.1 programs. It has been demonstrated that the interpretation in ridge-cut explosive bolt under dynamic loading condition should be necessary to the appropriate failure model and the basic stress of bolt failure is the principal stress. The use of this interpretation processor developing the present work could be extensively helped to design the shape and the amount of explosives in the explosive bolt having a complex geometry. It is also proved that the interpretation processor approach is an accurate and effective analysis technique to evaluate the separation mechanism in explosive bolts.

  • A series of numerical experiments were carried out to simulate the rock cutting behavior by TBM disc cutter in a given took condition. AUTODYN-3D, a commercial program capable of simulating three-dimensional dynamic failure, was utilized to carry out the numerical tests over four different disc cutter spacing conditions. After modelling three-dimensional geometries of disc cutter and rock specimen, the linear cutting tests by a disc cutter were simulated for eight different types of rocks. The numerical result, that is the optimum cutter spacing for isotropic rocks had the good agreements with those from linear cutting test. However, for relatively anisotropic or jointed rocks, the specific energy obtained from the numerical tests was almost two-times bigger than the real linear cutting results. Therefore, to simulate cutting procedures for anisotropic rocks realistically, further studies would be necessary.
