Evaluation of Factors Associated with Healthe and Diet of Preschool Children by Nutritional Status (영양상태에 따른 학령전 아동의 건강 및 식생활 요인평가)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors associated with health and diet by nutritional status. The subjects were the children aged 2 to 6. Physicians and nurses measured children's anthropometries and examined their blood and urine. Interviewers questioned children's food habits to their mothers. 24 hour recall was done for children with their mother. The nutritional status was classified to 'underweight', 'normal weight' and 'overweight' by weight for height(median±1 S.D.) of the reference population. The number of subjects in each group(under, normal, over) was 25, 130 and 49. Factors including anthropometry and hemoglobin concentration were not significantly dif ferent by the nutritional status. The birth weight of children was correlated positively to mothers' BMI. Z scores of weight for height were related to the birth weight positively by the analysis of variance. The children of the underweight group used nutritional supplements more frequently than those of normal and overweight group. The nutrient intakes of normal weight group were higher than those of low and overweight group. Particularly, the intakes of energy, carbohydrate and calcium were significantly high among the groups. In terms of number of foods, food groups and dishes consumed per day, the children of the normal weight group ate more diversely than other groups but the differences were not significant. In conclusion, the children of normal weight group had similar characteristics with other groups but had more desirable dietary intakes than other groups in this study. Because the diet of children may be different by the nutritional status, nutrition education for children should be conducted according to the characteristics of each group's diet.

Comparison of Dietary Behavior of Eating Alone in Single Households by Status of Workers and Age (1인가구의 고용형태 및 연령별 혼자 식사(혼밥)관련 식행동 비교)

  • Objectives: This study compared the dietary behaviors of single-person households when eating alone according to the employment pattern and age. Methods: A total of 566 people aged 20~59 years old were collected from the status of workers and classified into three groups according to their employment pattern (regular, non-regular workers and business owner). The subjects were collected by purposive quota sampling on a Gallup panel from June to November in 2017. The dietary behavior and perception of eating alone of the subjects were surveyed via online and self-reported questionnaires. Results: The frequency of eating alone was significantly higher in the regular group than the non-regular group and business group (p<0.01). The place of eating alone was significantly higher in the regular and non-regular group in the convenience store, and business group in the office (p<0.001). Ramen, the menu when eating alone, was significantly higher in the non-regular group than the other groups (p<0.01). The preference for eating alone was lower in the older age group (p<0.05). The young aged group (aged 20~30) ate more fast food and felt more convenience than the older aged group aged 40~50 years (p<0.05). Conclusions: Single-person households with a non-regular job have poorer dietary behavior in eating alone than those who had regular employment. In a situation of an increasing number of non-regular workers aged in their 20s and 30s, there is a high likelihood of social problems, such as health and poverty. This study highlights the need for a healthy food selection environment to improve the dietary life of single-person households with non-regular jobs for the diverse types of single-person households.

Analysis of Menu Patterns from the Korean National Nutrition Survey in 1990 (1990년도 국민영양조사에 따른 한국인의 사용식단 분석)

  • In this study, we analyzed 2-day food records of the 1990 Korean National Nutrition Survey data for 2,000 households, and investigated most popular menu patterns by area, income, meal. The basic menu patterns of Korean, excluding side dishes, were Rice+Soup, Rice+Stew, Rice, Others, Rice+Soup+Stew in the order of proportion for all analyzed sectors. And the proportion of menus with the rice as a main dish was about 90% on the whole. The most popular menus of Korean were Rice+Soup+Kimchi(4.52%), Noodle+Kimchi(4.30%). When they ate rice as a main dish, they had soup, kimchi, and 1 or 2 other side dishes. At large cities, Noodle+Kimchi was the most frequent menu(5.20%). On the other hands, small cities and rural areas, Rice+Soup+Kimchi+Cooked vegetable was common. For the households which salaries less than 5 million won, Rice+Stew+Kimchi is the most prevalent, but households which salaries higher than 5 million won, Noodle+Kimchi was most frequent. At breakfast and dinner, the proportion of Rice+Stew+Kimchi+Cooked vegetable was 4.70%. But at lunch, Noodle+Kimchi was the most frequent and other menu combinations based on noodle were also common. Therefore most households showed conventional rice based menu patterns, but these patterns were decreasing for the large cities, and high income households. Especially at lunch, they used various menus which were not based on rice.

Utilization and Isolation of new active substances from Sericulture Related MaterialsII. Development of an oral antihyperglycemic agent from silkworm powder

  • Since 1992, Sericulture & Entomology Research Institute(NSERI) and Kyung Hee University group screened an activity of lowering blood-glucose levels with silkworm related materials such as silkworm larvae powder, dried feces, pupae and silkworm moth in other to guide laymans to rational and educated utilization of silkworm-related materials for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. In experiments examining several silkworms in different stages and prepared in different conditions, a freeze dried silkworm powder of 5th instar 3rd day showed a higher glucose lowering activity about 20% than heat dried matured silkworm powder. Among the three dosage of 500mg, 830mg and 1,160mg in ate preliminary clinical trial, the 830mg exhibited a significant effect on postprandial blood glucose level and did and did not cause any hypoglycemic side effect. In the blood glucose lowering activity of mulberry and silkworm varieties, the Yongcheonppong and Samkwangjam showed the highest activity for lowering blood glucose levels. In experiments to see the difference in blood-glucose lowering activity between either male and female or larvae and pupae, activity of larvae was higher than that of pupae and the male was higher than female. The heating dry and artificial diet showed lower than mulberry diet and normal freeze dry of the 5th instar 3rd day. Among the sericultural products, larvae showed the highest activity. We find out the fact that effect of silkworm powder attributed to the inhibition of ${\alpha}$-glucohydrolase catalyzed reaction in the small intestine.

Dietary Behavior and Nutrition Quotient (NQ) Scores According to the Weight Status of Preschool Children in Gwangju Metropolitan City (광주광역시 유아의 체중별 식행동과 영양지수)

  • This study aimed to assess the association between the weight status and dietary behavior of preschool children. The survey included 412 preschool children aged 2-5 years in 31 childcare facilities in Gwangju. General characteristics of children and their mothers, weight, height, feeding type, complementary feeding, food allergy, and dietary behavior of children based on the Nutrition Quotient for preschoolers (NQ-P) questionnaire were considered. Children were classified into 4 groups by weight status; underweight, normal, overweight, and obese, based on the 2017 Korean National Growth Charts. The percentage of children in the respective groups was 5.3, 70.9, 10.7, 13.1%. Weight status was not related to breast feeding duration nor the starting time of complementary feeding. The NQ-P scores of underweight, normal, overweight, and obese groups were 55.4, 60.0, 60.8, 60.0. Among the three factors covered by the NQ-P, 'balance' and 'environment' scores of the underweight group were lower than that of other groups. Underweight children consumed beans, fish, and white milk less frequently. The 'moderation' scores of the overweight/obese group were lower than those of the normal or obese groups. Obese children more frequently ate processed meat and fast foods. Proper nutrition education is thus needed for not only obese children but also underweight children based on their age, along with their parents, and caregivers.

Association between Vitamin C and the Prevalence of Obesity among Korean Adults - The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2017 - (한국 성인의 비타민C 섭취와 비만 유병률의 연관성 - 2016-2017년 국민건강영양조사 자료를 이용하여 -)

  • This study investigates the relationship between vitamin C intake and obesity prevalence among Korean adults. Based on data of the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2017), a total of 1,356 participants were included in this analysis. Increasing the dietary vitamin C intake resulted in a significantly decreased occurrence of BMI obesity prevalence (p for trend=0.0194) and WC obesity prevalence (p for trend=0.0452). Moreover, increasing the dietary vitamin C intake of Korean adults having a high frequency of eating breakfast resulted in significantly decreased BMI obesity prevalence (p for trend=0.0406) and WC obesity prevalence (p for trend=0.0432). Among the Korean adults who ate out frequently, decreased BMI obesity prevalence was determined with increased intakes of dietary vitamin C (p for trend=0.0193) and total vitamin C (food and dietary supplements) (p for trend=0.0429), whereas significant decrease in WC obesity prevalence was observed with increased dietary vitamin C intake (p for trend=0.0484). Our results provide conclusive evidence that consumption of dietary vitamin C is associated with obesity prevalence in Korean adults, according to their habits of eating breakfast and frequency of eating out.

Lunch Eating Pattern and Dietary Habits of High School Students Attending Online Classes during the COVID-19 Pandemic (COVID-19 시대 온라인 수업 날 점심을 스스로 차리는 고등학생의 식생활)

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the curtailing of school meal services. This study aimed to compare the diets of students attending online classes who prepared their own lunch under these circumstances, with those of their counterparts who had their lunch prepared for them. In December 2020, a survey was conducted on 204 students (75 male and 129 female) at a high school in Gyeonggi-do. The results showed that more girls prepared their own lunch than boys (53.5% vs. 36.0%, respectively, P<0.05). Further, more participants with working mothers prepared their own lunch compared to those with unemployed mothers (60.8% vs. 23.0%, respectively, P<0.001). Lunch was prepared either by parents (47.5%), themselves (47.1%), or others (5.4%). A comparison of the Nutrition Quotient (NQ) was carried out between the subjects who prepared their own lunch and those who ate lunch prepared by their parents. The students who prepared their own lunch had significantly lower total (P<0.05), balance (P<0.01), and environment (P<0.01) sectors of NQ-A than their counterparts. Especially, subjects whose parents prepared their lunch had bean·tofu·soy milk more frequently (P<0.01), tended to eat vegetables more frequently (P=0.059), and skipped breakfast less frequently (P<0.01). In conclusion, this study suggested that high school students who have to prepare their own lunch at home during the COVID-19 pandemic are the newly emerging nutritionally vulnerable group. This study may provide the basic information necessary for preparing measures to maintain the diet quality of high school students during the COVID-19 pandemic and similar situations in the future when school meal services may not be available.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the grade of WA vitrified and resinoid bond grinding wheels by the sue of AE measuring system. When the manufactured 48 kinds of specimens were scratched by the method of OKOSHI'S grade test, the relationship between the amount of bit scratch depth of grinding wheel specimens and the character- istics of AE signals, and the relationship of AE counts and grade were considered as fololws; (1) The higher the grades are AE cumlulative event counts N and AE event count rate n, the smaller the values tend to be. But A $E_{rms}$is in reverse. (2) In the case of same grade, the smaller the grain size is, the higher the value of AE cumulative event counts N and A $E_{rms}$is results of comparison and observation. The grinding wheel with lower elasticity and with higher percentage of pore detected higher value of AE cumula- tive event counts N than with higher elasticity and lower percentage of pore. But A $E_{rms}$ is in reverse. (3) AE cumulative event counts N and bit scratch depth h have normally one to one correspondence. (4) It can be expected that quantitative evaluations of grade by using AE have been carried out by the wave observation of AE signal in line with the relationship between load speed of bit and AE cumulative event counts N & AE event count rate n.' Activation of the M1 Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor Induces GluA2 Internalization in the Hippocampus (쥐 해마에서 M1 무스카린 아세틸콜린 수용체의 활성에 의한 GluA2 세포내이입 연구)

  • Cholinergic innervation of the hippocampus is known to be correlated with learning and memory. The cholinergic agonist carbachol (CCh) modulate synaptic plasticity and produced long-term synaptic depression (LTD) in the hippocampus. However, the exact mechanisms by which the cholinergic system modifies synaptic functions in the hippocampus have yet to be determined. This study introduces an acetylcholine receptor-mediated LTD that requires internalization of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionate (AMPA) receptors on the postsynaptic surface and their intracellular mechanism in the hippocampus. In the present study, we showed that the application of the cholinergic agonist CCh reduced the surface expression of GluA2 on synapses and that this reduction was prevented by the M1 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist pirenzepine in primary hippocampal neurons. The interaction between GluA2 and the glutamate receptor-interacting protein 1 (GRIP1) was disrupted in a hippocampal slice from a rat upon CCh simulation. Under the same conditions, the binding of GluA2 to adaptin-α, a protein involved in clathrin-mediated endocytosis, was enhanced. The current data suggest that the activation of LTD, mediated by the acetylcholine receptor, requires the internalization of the GluA2 subunits of AMPA receptors and that this may be controlled by the disruption of GRIP1 in the PDZ ligand domain of GluA2. Therefore, we can hypothesize that one mechanism underlying the LTD mediated by the M1 mAChR is the internalization of the GluA2 AMPAR subunits from the plasma membrane in the hippocampal cholinergic system.

The Norwood Operation in Infants with Complex Congenital Heart Disease (복잡 선천성 심기형 환자에서의 Norwood 술식)

  • From April 1987 to May 1996, 13 infants underwent a Norwood operation for complex congenital heart diseases including hypoplastic left heart syndrome (n : 7), mitral stenosis with small VSD and subaortic stenosis (n : 1), mitral atresia with ventricular septal defect, coarctation of aorta, and subaortic stenosis (n = 1), interrupted aortic arch with ventricular septal defect and subaortic stenosis (n : 1), tricuspid atresia with transposition of the great arteries (n = 1), and complex double-inlet left ventricle (n : 2). All patients without hypoplastic left heart syndrome were associated wit hypoplasia of ascending aorta and arch. Age at operation ranged from 3 days to 8.7 months (mean 60.6 $\pm$ 71.6 days, median 39 days). The operative mortality( < 30 days) was 46% (6 patients). Late mortality was 15% (2 patients). All operative deaths occured during the Erst 24 hours after the operation as a result of cardiopulmonary bypass weaning failure (5 patients) and sudden hemodynamic instability postoperatively (1 patient). Late death was due to aspiration pneumonia in two cases. There are 5 long-term survivals (39%). Three of them have undergone a two-stage repair with a modified Fontan operation in two and total cavopulmonary shunt in one at 12, 17, 4.5 months after Norwood procedure with no mortality. Two patients have entered a three-stage repair strategy by undergoing a bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt at 3 and 5.5 months after initial operation with 1 operative death. The actuarial survival rate for all patients at the first-stage operation, including hospital deaths and ate death was 30.8% at 1 year. In conclusion, the operative mortality of Norwood operation was relatively high compared to other operation for major cardiac anomalies, continuing experience will lead to an improvement in result.
