  • Steam reforming reaction is a matured technology to get hydrogen from hydrocarbon fuels compared with other reforming reactions such as partial oxidation(POX), autothermal reforming(ATR). It is so endothermic that it needs heat source to activate the reaction. Due to the reaction characteristics, heat transfer limitation phenomena generally occur in the steam reformer. As one of new ideas, the effect of discontinuous gas feeding is investigated based on heat transfer characteristics. The new operating method is usually favorable at high GHSV region(i.e. over $10,000h^{-1}$). In order to numerically simulate the physical issues, numerical approach is adopted based on heterogeneous reaction model, two-equation model in energy equation, and other constitutive models in porous media.

  • The use of the dairy male calf for beef production has been found to be economically unprofitable during the past due to high cost of feeds and relatively low beef price. However, due to current shortage of domestic beef supply and rising beef price, this research aimed to assess feeding methods and costs and returns in raising dairy male calves for beef production under changing economic conditions. Two diets were compared: calves on an optimal feeding level were given milk replacer for 44 d and a concentrate (with ad lib. hay) to 150 kg bodyweight that contained 16% crude protein; those given a sub-optimal diet, more appropriate for smallholder farms, received milk replacer for 30 d and 14% CP concentrate. Twelve pairs of dairy male calves (average age 32 days) of Holstein-Friesian high grades were used, each pair having similar influencing factors such as weight, age, and genotype. Each animal was kept in a separate feeding stall until reaching the final weight of 150 kg. The results from this experiment showed that the differences of traits concerning growth performance and feed efficiency of the animals raised under the two feeding regimes were statistically nonsignificant. The optimal group was just slightly better, but the cost of production of the sub-optimal group was 24 percent lower (4,667 vs. 6,144 baht per animal) and the cost difference was highly significant. The results from this investigation showed that beef production from dairy male calves can be economically viable when sub-optimal feeding method is used and market beef price is at current level.

  • ε-Poly-L-lysine (ε-PL) is a homopolymer of L-lysine molecules connected between the epsilon amino and alpha carboxyl groups. This polymer is currently used as a natural preservative in food. Insufficient biomass is a major problem in ε-PL fermentation. Here, to improve cell growth and ε-PL productivity, various nitrogen-rich nutrients were supplemented into flask cultures after 16 h cultivation, marking the onset of ε-PL biosynthesis. Yeast extract, soybean powder, corn powder, and beef extract significantly improved cell growth. In terms of ε-PL productivity, yeast extract at 0.5% (w/v) gave the maximum yield (2.24 g/l), 115.4% higher than the control (1.04 g/l), followed by soybean powder (1.86 g/l) at 1% (w/v) and corn powder (1.72 g/l) at 1% (w/v). However, supplementation with beef extract inhibited ε-PL production. The optimal time for supplementation for all nutrients examined was at 16 h cultivation. The kinetics of yeast-extract-supplemented cultures showed enhanced cell growth and production duration. Thus, the most commonly used two-stage pH control fed-batch fermentation method was modified by omitting the pH 5.0-controlled period, and coupling the procedure with nutrient feeding in the pH 3.9-controlled phase. Using this process, by continuously feeding 0.5 g/h of yeast extract, soybean powder, or corn powder into cultures in a 30 L fermenter, the final ε-PL titer reached 28.2 g/l, 23.7 g/l, and 21.4 g/l, respectively, 91.8%, 61.2%, and 45.6% higher than that of the control (14.7 g/l). This describes a promising option for the mass production of ε-PL.

  • The application of light weight materials, such as aluminum alloy, has been limited due of their poor formability. Especially, aluminum alloy tube has limited expansion capability at most 15% at room temperature. New manufacturing process, called hot air forming, is introduced to apply aluminum tube to the automotive suspension components which have complex shape and require high expansion ratio about 40%. The process is carried out at the elevated temperature above $500^{\circ}C$, so numerous material properties and process parameters related to the high temperature should be investigated and determined to get a sound product. In this study, the effect of thermal properties and forming parameters such as the temperature of tool, axial feeding and gas pressure are analyzed by using explicit finite element method.

  • Dorsal aorta cannulated rainbow trout averaging 505 $\pm$ 6.5g (Mean $\pm$ SD) were divided into 7 groups (5 fish per group). Twenty four hour post feeding, cannulated fish were intubated with one of seven L-amino acid diets containing graded levels of Valine (Val. : 0.45, 0.95, 1.20, 1.45, 1.70, 1.95 or 2.45%) at 1% of body weight. Blood samples were taken at 0, 5 and 24hr after feeding the experimental diets. Post-prandial (5h after feeding) plasma-free Valine concentrations (PPval.) increased linearly from fish fed diets containing Valine between 0.45 and 1.45%, but the concentration remained constant from fish fed diets containing valine between 1.45 and 2.45%. Post-absorptive (24h after feeding) plasma free valine concentrations (PAval) increased linearly from fish fed diets containing valine between 0.45 and 1.45%, but the concentration remained constant from fish fed diets containing valine between 1.45 and 1.95%. Using the broken-line model analysis, the dietary valine requirement by PPval and PAval could be 1.44 and 1.50% in rainbow trout, respectively. These results supported that the estimated dietary valine requirement by PP(val.) and PA(val.) could be in close agreement with the values obtained from the previous conventional feeding method. Thus, the use of PFAA concentrations for determining essential amino acid requirements could be possible in rainbow trout with dorsal aorta cannulation.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop guidelines for cleaning of enteral nutrition bags by comparing the level of equipment contamination according to cleaning and disinfection methods. Method: This study was a true-experimental study, with 60 cases in total. Twenty cases each were randomly assigned to tepid water, detergent and brush, and disinfectant groups. The period of the experiment was March to April 2010, and enteral nutrition was given for 1 houre, 3 times a day at 7AM, noon, and 7PM for seven days. Enteral nutrition bags were cleaned after each feeding according to assigned cleaning and disinfection method followed by microbial cultures on 4th and 8th day before the 7AM feeding. Results: After 3 days of feeding and cleaning, the level of contamination of bags was not significantly different among the three groups. After seven days, the level of contamination was significantly lower when bags were cleaned with detergent and brush or with disinfectant compared to cleaning with tepid water. Conclusion: In cases where enteral nutrition bags are reused for example, in home care settings, studying findings indicate that cleaning bags using detergent and brush or disinfectant is an effective way to prevent contamination of bags.

  • Among silkworm diseases, white muscardine is the most virulent and contagious disease caused by Beauveria bassiana and common during winter and rainy seasons. The disease is managed at present by practicing the silkworm body and rearing seat disinfection to prevent the spread of white muscardine during silkworm rearing as the available methods do not cure the silkworms against white muscardine. The use of systemic fungicide was suggested recently to control white muscardine. The present study investigated the practicability of application aspect of systemic fungicide as spray, It is observed that 3 times feeding of systemic fungicide through mulberry leaf, fed immediately after third, fourth moult and on $4^{th}$ day of final instar as most effective in suppressing the multiplication of the fungus in silkworm. Spraying of the systemic fungicide on mulberry in the rearing house, air-dried and feeding was suggested as suitable application method. Alternately the spraying of the systemic fungicide on mulberry in mulberry garden 6 hrs prior to feeding was also suggested as a method for the control of white muscardine in silkworm rearing.

  • In this paper, to achieve a broad-band and high-gain antenna, we thus designed and analyzed the CRLPDA(Corner Reflector Antenna feeding by Log-Periodic Dipole Antenna) made up of 90$^{\circ}$corner reflector, which is trough-reflector type installed a planar reflector at the folded line. CRLPDA for operating frequency band of 1,400 MHB ~ 2,400 MHz was designed and radiation characteristics of the designed antenna were analyzed by moment method. To verify the analysis results, CRLPDA was fabricated and the calculated results were compared with the measured results. The measured results showed good agreement with the calculated results. As the result of measurements, bandwidth(VSWR>2) for 1,000 MHz was achieved and gain was 13 dBi.

  • As Daecheon beach, which is the study area, has problem of erosion and loss of most beach under the extraordinary wave during the typhoon event, it is necessary to apply erosion control measures for short term impact. Therefore, we analyzed the status and reason of the erosion by field survey, collection of hydraulic model test, and numerical model experiment. For the erosion control measure, we adopted beach feeding and submerged reef method available at that site among various counter measures. Numerical analyses were made for both beach feeding only and beach feeding with submerged reefs and these were compared with the present status to find out the optimum design and to contribute for preparing a long term plan of beach loss protection.

  • The tryptic enzyme activities from hepatopancreas, foregut, midgut and feces were examined to optimize the feeding method in whiteleg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. The highest tryptic enzyme activity was found in hepatopancreas. The enzyme activities of hepatopancreas were 4 times higher than those of foregut per mg dry weight at 30 minutes feeding. Post feeding period, the activities of hepatopancreas increased continuously up to 30 hours after feeding. Trypsin activities of foregut showed about 3 times higher than did those of midgut. Average activity of foregut reached the pick with $303{\pm}68\;(mean{\pm}SE)$ nmol/mg/min at two hours after feeding and kept the activity up to 4 hours after feeding and thereafter the activity decreased. Average tryptic enzyme activity of midgut increased to $96{\pm}26nmol/mg/min$ up to two hours after feeding and it decreased to $52{\pm}17nmol/mg/min$ at five hours after feeding eventhough the gastric evacuation rate was still 50% by then. Foregut clearance occurred in 30 minutes after feeding and midgut weight increased up to 2 hours after feeding. Also we found that the maximal food ingestion in foregut was equivalent to the average 0.3% of its body weight by 30 minutes after feeding. Up to 5 hours after feeding, the weight ratio of midgut to body weight reduced, but still the weight ratio of foregut to body weight kept the similarity until then. These indicated that the tryptic enzyme activity and the clearance rate are different among the digestive organs and between forgot and midgut during the post feeding period in whiteleg shrimp.
