  • Tephrochronology uses regional tephra for age dating and stratigraphic correlations. Regional tephras are important in Quaternary geology and archaeology because they can be used as stratigraphic time-markers. In this review, identification and dating methods of tephra are summarized. In addition, the characteristics of regional tephras in terrestrial deposits of the Korean Peninsula are elaborated, and geological applications and limitations of the regional tephra layers are also discussed. So far, AT, Ata, and Kb-Ks tephra layers from Kyushu, Japan have been found in Pleistocene paleosol, marine terrace deposits, and lacustrine deposits in Korea. Also, although not officially confirmed, Aso-4 tephra is likely to occur in terrestrial deposits. The regional tephra layers are vital for dating, especially with regard to sediments over 50 ka beyond the range of radiocarbon dating, and for dating of active faults. Furthermore, it can provide important information for preparing countermeasures against volcanic disasters. However, in order to use the tephra layer geologically, it must be confirmed whether it is a primary deposit based on sedimentological study.

  • The Kita-Yamato Trough is characterized by a SW-NE trending narrow graben between the Yamato Bank and the Kita-Yamato Bank in the central East Sea/Japan Sea (ES/JS). Core 20EEZ-1 was obtained in the flat summit of a small ridge from the southwest Kita-Yamato Trough. The sedimentation was mainly controlled by the supply of hemipelgic sediments and substantial tephras from explosive volcanic eruptions of the Quaternary volcanoes. The aim of this study is to reconstruct the tephrostratigraphy from the marine sediments collected from the Kita-Yamato Trough and to provide the atmosphere and ocean conditions during the explosive volcanic eruptions. According to the detailed tephrostratigraphy and lithofacies records, the core sediments were deposited during the last marine isotope stage (MIS) 7. The core consists of four lithofacies, idetified as, oxidized mud (OM), crudely laminated mud (CLM) and bioturbated mud (BM), interbedded with coarse-grained tephra (TP). The major element geochemistry and stratigraphic positions of seven tephra layers suggest that they originated from the Aira caldera in Kyushu area among the Japanese islands (AT tephra; 29.24 ka), unknown submarine volcano in the south Korea Plateau (SKP-I; MIS 3, SKP-II; MIS 4, SKP-IV; boundary between MIS 6 and MIS 5e, SKP-V; MIS 6, respectively), and the Baegdusan volcano in the Korean Peninsula (B-KY1; ca. 130 ka, B-KY2; ca. 196 ka). The absence of tephras originated trom Ulleung Island in core 20EEZ-l suggest that the tephras had not been transported into the Kita-Yamato Trough by atmosphere conditions during the eruptions. On the other hand, the B-KYI and the B-KY2 tephras derived from the Baegdusan volcano were founded in the Kita-Yamato Trough by a presence of prevailing westerly winds during the eruptions. Furthermore, the SKP tephras were characterized by the transport across the air-water interface, causing quickly thrust of raising eruption plumes from subaqueous explosive eruptions. Surface currents may play an important role in controlling the distribution patterns of the SKP tephras to distal areas. The tephrostratigraphic study in the Kita-Yamato Trough provides the important chronostratigraphic marker horizons and the detailed atmosphere and ocean conditions during the explosive eruptions.

  • Three piston cores. obtained from the northwestern Ulleung Basin of the East Sea, are analyzed to study the tephrostratigraphy of the late Quaternary core sediments and to reveal the comparative characteristics of the tephra layers. The cores consist mainly of the muddy sediments that are partly interbedded with lapilli tephra and ash layers. The muds are further divided into hemipelagic and turbiditic mud facies. The hemipelagic facies is dominated by bioturbated mud and crudely laminated mud, whereas the turbiditic facies includes mainly thinly laminated mud and homogeneous mud, and often alternates with non-turbiditic muds. According to microscopic observation and EDX analysis, three tephra layers of the Ulleung-Oki (U-Oki; ca. 9.3 ka), Aira-Tanzawa (AT: ca. 22~24.7 ka) and Ulleung-Yamato (U-Ym; ca. 25~33 ka) are identified in the study cores. Among these, the U-Oki and U-Ym layers, originating from the Ulleung Island, consist mainly of massive-type glass shards with alkali feldspar. Both of the tephra layers contain a lower content of SiO$_2$ (57~66.5 wt.%) and a higher content of Na$_2$O+K$_2$O (11~16 wt.%) than the AT layer (SiO$_2$=75~78.5 wt.%, Na$_2$O+K$_2$O=6.5~9 wt.%) that consists of typical plane-type and/or bubble-wall glass grains. Compared with that of the U-Ym layer, a sedimentary facies of the U-Oki layer is very thick and contains three stratigraphic units, probably due to relatively large and different supplies of pyroclastic sediments. Thus, the eruption of Ulleung Volcano (ca. 7,300 B.C.) is thought to have had a more powerful effect on depositional environment than the U-Ym eruption.

  • Goryeri archaeological site is located in the upstream valley of the Danjang River. The basement rocks of the area are composed of the Cretaceous to Palaeogene biotite granite (KbGr), acidic dyke (Kad), Milyang Andesite (Kma) and Jyunggagsan Formation. Among them Milyang Andesite and Jyunggagsan Formation are prevailed in archaeological site and they are composed of reddish brown tuffaceous shale, sandstone and conglomerate, with intercalations of acidic tuffs and lapilli tuffs. The purpose of this research is not only to compare REE pattern of the soil-sedimentary deposits with those of surrounding rocks, but also to identify vitric tephra in the soil-sedimentary deposits derived from the andesite, acidic tuff and lapilii tuff, in order to illucidate the provenance of the vitric tephra. The rare earth element(REE) of the soils and sedimentary deposits results in the same REE pattern with those analyzed from the surrounding basement rocks. This indicates that the soils and sedimentary deposits are originated from the surrounding basement rocks, most probably from the andesite and lapilli tuff. In addition, vitric tephra were identified both in the Quaternary in-situ weathered soils and sedimentary deposits (PMU-13 and PMU-17), and in the weathered surrounding lapilli tuff. These vitric tephra are considered to be different from those of Japanese AT(Aira Tanzawa) -tephra. The latter is predominant with clean, platty, bubble-walled and Y-shaped vitrics, while the former is conspicuous with those shapes of large and diverse size and devitrified, as well as having secondarily bubbled-surfaces reflecting surface weathering. The size of vitric fragments in the Goryeri site is about 300${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and large in size in compasion to 150${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of Japanese AT-Tephra. The interim results of the research are contradictary to the explanations based on a series of AT-tephra researches carried by Japanese scholar. In short, the vitric materials of the Goryeri archaeological site are most probably originated from the weathering products of the surrounding basement rocks, and are different from the AT-tephra in their size, shape and devitrification properties. Thus it is highly recommended to have a further comprehensive research which is more emphasized the magmatic genesis of these vitric tephra in addition to the external shape and morphology.

  • Dangsanbong volcano, which is located on the coast of the western promontory of Cheju Island, occurs in such a regular pattern on the sequences which represent an excellent example of an eruptive cycle. The volcano comprises a horseshoe-shaped tuff cone and a younger nested cinder cone on the crater floor, which are overlain by a lava cap at the top of the cinder cone, and wide lava plateau in the moat between two cones and in the northern part. The volcanic sequences suggest volcanic processes that start with Surtseyan eruption, progress through Strombolian eruption and end with Hawaiian eruption, and then are followed by rock fall from sea cliff of the tuff cone and by air fall from another crater. It is thought that the eruptive environments of the tuff cone could be mainly emergent because the present cone is located on the coast, and standing body of sea water could play a great role. It is thought that the now emergent part of the tuff cone was costructed subaerially because there is no evidence of marine reworking. The emergent tuff cone is characterized by distinctive steam-explosivity that results primarily from a bulk interaction between rapidly ascending magma and external water. The sea water gets into the vent by flooding accross or through the top or breach of northern tephra cone. Dangsanbong tuff cone was constructed from Surtseyan eruption which went into with tephra finger jetting explosion in the early stage, late interspersed with continuous upruch activities, and from ultra-Surtseyan jetting explosions producting base surges in the last. When the enclosure of the vent by a long-lived tephra barrier would prevent the flooding and thus allow the vent to dry out, the phreatomagmatic activities ceased to transmit into magmatic activity of Strombolian eruption, which constructed a cinder cone on the crater floor of the tuff cone Strombolian eruption ceased when magma in the conduit gradually became depleted in gas. In the Dangsanbong volcano, the last magmatic activity was Hawaiian eruption which went into with foundation and effusion of basalt lava.

  • Late Quaternary stratigraphy and sedimentary environmental changes were studied based on four core sediments and their pore water taken from the southwestern part of the East Sea. The results of tephrostratigraphy and radiocarbon dates indicate that the cores cover the time interval from the middle stage of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 to MIS 1 (Holocene). The average of sedimentation rate in core sediments varies from 10 cm/kyr to 20 cm/kyr, but it fluctuates generally in particular time intervals such as MIS 2, which would be related with the sea-level changes at that time. On the other hand, the relations between ${\delta}^{13}C_{org}$ and C/N ratios suggest that the organic matter in the cores was originated mainly from marine algae. In addition, the value of ${\delta}^{13}C_{CH4}$ indicates bacterial origin rather than thermogenic one.

  • Nonwovens have been widely used in various regions from the households to the industrial, agricultural and medical goods. Synthetic fibers have been used for source of nonwovens commonly because of their useful and economic properties. They are not only main factor causing environmental problems but also spend huge cost to renew the environmental disruption by them. Nonwovens must have both cost-competitiveness and environment-friendly property to be the desirable sources in 21th centuries. For meet these needs, it is suitable for the times that economical and environmentally-safe kenaf fibers would be used as raw materials of nonwovens. Kenaf and polyester fibers were blended in 4 types of ratio : 0/100, 20/80, 40/60, 60/40 were needle-punched. The nonwovens properties such as color values, surface appearance, strength, elongations, stiffness, moisture regain, water and oil absorbency, and electrification were tested. As the results, tensile and tear strengths, water and oil absorbency were maximum at 20/80 kenaf/polyester blend nonwoven, because of effecting by nonwoven structure and fiber properties. The moisture regain were increased according to kenaf were blended and the eletrification reduced in proportion to the kenaf fibers by chemical property of fiber composed nonwovens.

  • This study investigated the effects of teff flour on the properties of pound cakes. Five types of pound cakes were made by addition of 0% (Control), 5% (TF5), 10% (TF10), 15% (TF15), and 20% (TF20) of teff flour based on wheat flour. Specific gravity of pound cake batter showed no significant differences among samples as 0.54 (p<0.05). Baking loss was the highest in the control at 5.92% and the lowest in TF20 at 5.27%. Batter yield was the highest in TF20 at 94.73% and the lowest in control at 94.08%. Moisture content was the highest in TF20 at 23.68% and the lowest in control at 21.32%. pH showed no significant differences among samples at 7.61~7.65 (p<0.05). a-values of crumb significantly increased while L-values and b-values significantly decreased with added teff flour amounts. (p<0.05). ${\Delta}E$ values significantly increased with teff flour at 34.32~49.24 (p<0.05). Hardness was lowest in TF20 at $180.60g/cm^2$. Springiness was the lowest in TF20 at 85.37%. Cohesiveness showed no significant differences among samples (p<0.05). Chewiness was the lowest in TF20 at 172.17 g. Hardness more rapidly increased in control at $273.13{\sim}26,123.33g/cm^2$ than that of pound cakes with teff flour. Avrami exponent (n) was the highest in the control at 3.5987 and the lowest in TF20 at 1.2144. In sensory evaluation, flavor of TF20 was higher than that of the control at 4.43. Overall acceptability had a higher score in TF20 than in the control. It is considered that addition of 20% teff flour can improve the quality characteristics and retard retrogradation of pound cake.

  • As the consumption of wheat has increased recently, the number of people who have digestive problems resulting from gluten in wheat has also increased. Teff has an attractive nutritional profile, as it not only gluten-free but also high in dietary fiber, protein, iron, and calcium. Seven samples were prepared for this study. The quality characteristics of gluten-free noodles were evaluated based on pH, salinity, water absorption, turbidity, color, texture properties, tensile strength, and SEM. The pH value was the highest in TF100 with a pH of 6.66 and the lowest in the control with a pH of 6.42. Salinity showed no significant difference among all samples, and it ranged from 0.02~0.04% (p<0.05). Water absorption was the highest in TFX with a value of 66.11%, and the lowest in the control with a value of 44.81%. Turbidity showed no significant difference among all samples, and it ranged from 0.14~0.21 O.D. (p<0.05). While the lightness and yellowness values decreased with an increase in teff flour content, the redness value tended to decrease. The color difference value was the highest in the sample group without gluten. Based on the texture profile analysis, the hardness was highest in the control with a value of 46.74 N and lowest in TF100 with a value of 18.34 N. The springiness showed no significant difference among all samples. The cohesiveness was highest in the control with a value of 0.92 N. The chewiness decreased with an increase in teff flour content. Although the control with gluten had the highest tensile strength at $3.42kg/cm^2$, TFX had considerable tensile strength at $2.30kg/cm^2$. This study demonstrated the processability of gluten-free noodles using teff flour.

  • Volcanostratigraphy in Ulleung Island is divided into 4 stratigraphic groups: Dodong Basaltic Rocks, Ulleung Group, Seonginbong Group and NariGroup. The main pyroclastics in them includes lapilli tuff intercalated within the Dodong Basaltic Rocks, lapilli tuff at the top of Sadong Breccia, Sataegam Tuff, Gombawi Welded Tuff, Bongrae Scoria Deposits, Maljandeung Tuff, Nari Scoria Deposits and Jugam Scoria Deposits. Analysing eruption types, The lapilli tuff in the Dodong Basaltic Rocks is derived from Surtseyan eruption, and the Bongrae, Nari and Jugam Scoria Deposits are caused by Strombolian eruptions or/and sub-Plinion eruptions, but the Sataegam Tuff and Maljandeung Tuff are derived from Plinian and phreatoplinian eruptions. Among them the large-scaled eruptions. In particular, the eruptions of Maljandeung were large enough to result in caldera collapse, and had falled out tephras to the eastern Korean peninsula but even Japan Islands. The magma with high potential to be still alive is judged to be trachyandesitic and phonolitic in composition. If the trachyandesitic magma explodes, it will probably result in a strombolian eruption and have a fairly low explosivity, but if the phonolitic magma explodes, it will probably result in a plinian eruption and have a much higher explosivity. If the eruption had a high explosivity, there is a possibility that it could easily be converted into a phreatoplinian eruption due to the influx of groundwater by the easy generation of fractures. These large-scaled eruptions could fall out tephras to the eastern Korean peninsula but even Japan Islands.
