Electrochemical characteristics of Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys coated with HA/TiN by using magnetron sputtering method were studied. The Ti-30Ta containing Zr(3, 7, 10 and 15wt%) were 10 times melted to improve chemical homogeneity by using a vacuum furnace and then homogenized for 24hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The specimens were cut and polished for corrosion test and coating, and then coated with HA/TiN, respectively, by using DC and RF-magnetron sputtering method. The analyses of coated surface and coated layer were carried out by using optical microscope(OM), field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) and X-ray diffractometer(XRD). The electrochemical characteristics were examined using potentiodynamic (-1,500 mV~ + 2,000 mV) and A.C. impedance spectroscopy(100 kHz ~ 10 mHz) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of homogenized Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys showed needle-like structure. In case of homogenized Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys, a-peak was increased with increasing Zr content. The thickness of TiN and HA coated layer showed 400 nm and 100 nm, respectively. The corrosion resistance of HA/TiN-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys were higher than that of the non-coated Ti-30TaxZr alloys, whic hindicate better protective effect. The polarization resistance($R_p$) value of HA/TiN coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys showed $8.40{\times}10^5{\Omega}cm^2$ which was higher than that of non-coated Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys.

Ti and Ti alloys are known to have excellent corrosion properties, which is an important aspect for biocompability of these implants in human body. In our study, four types of samples (Cp-Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, $0.5wt.\%$ Fe-Ti and ECAP Ti) were tested for their apatite forming ability and corrosion properties. The micropolished samples were treated with 5M NaOH solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. Each samples was gently washed with distilled water and heat-treated at 600"C for 1 hour. The heat-treated samples were soaked in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) solution at $36.5^{\circ}C$ in an incubator for different period of time. The test revealed that $0.5 wt.\%$ Fe-Ti showing faster apatite growth on the surface (7th day) compared to other samples. Polarization curve test (PCT) was also carried out to determine the corrosion resistance of each samples in SBF solution. ECAP-Ti showed highest corrosion resistance compared to any other samples. $0.5wt.\%Fe-Ti$ showed higher corrosion potential and corrosion current compared to other samples.
$TiO_2$ nanowires were self-catalytically synthesized on bare Si(100) substrates using metallorganic chemical vapor deposition. The nanowire formation was critically affected by growth temperature. The $TiO_2$ nanowires were grown at a high density on Si(100) at $510^{\circ}C$, which is near the complete decomposition temperature ($527^{\circ}C$) of the Ti precursor $(Ti(O-iPr)_2(dpm)_2)$. At $470^{\circ}C$, only very thin (< $0.1{\mu}m$) $TiO_2$ film was formed because the Ti precursor was not completely decomposed. When growth temperature was increased to $550^{\circ}C$ and $670^{\circ}C$, the nanowire formation was also significantly suppressed. A vaporsolid (V-S) growth mechanism excluding a liquid phase appeared to control the nanowire formation. The $TiO_2$ nanowire growth seemed to be activated by carbon, which was supplied by decomposition of the Ti precursor. The $TiO_2$ nanowire density was increased with increased growth pressure in the range of 1.2 to 10 torr. In addition, the nanowire formation was enhanced by using Au and Pt catalysts, which seem to act as catalysts for oxidation. The nanowires consisted of well-aligned ~20-30 nm size rutile and anatase nanocrystallines. This MOCVD synthesis technique is unique and efficient to self-catalytically grow $TiO_2$ nanowires, which hold significant promise for various photocatalysis and solar cell applications.

Porous Ti-systems with unidirectionally aligned channels were synthesized by freeze-drying and a heat treatment process. $TiH_2$ powder and camphene were used as the source materials of Ti and sublimable vehicles, respectively. Camphene slurries with $TiH_2$ content of 10 and 15 vol% were prepared by milling at $50^{\circ}C$ with a small amount of oligomeric polyester dispersant. Freezing of the slurry was done in a Teflon cylinder attached to a copper bottom plate cooled at $-25^{\circ}C$ while unidirectionally controlling the growth direction of the camphene. Pores were generated subsequently by sublimation of the camphene during drying in air for 48 h. The green body was heat-treated at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in a nitrogen and air atmosphere. XRD analysis revealed that the samples composed of TiN and $TiO_2$ phase were dependent on the heat-treatment atmosphere. The sintered samples showed large pores of about 120 mm which were aligned parallel to the camphene growth direction. The internal wall of the large pores had relatively small pores with a dendritic structure due to the growth of camphene dendrite depending on the degree of nucleation and powder rearrangement in the slurry. These results suggest that a porous body with an appropriate microstructure can be successfully fabricated by freeze-drying and a controlled sintering process of a camphene/$TiH_2$ slurry.
Statement of problem. Surface microgrooves on Ti substrata have been shown to alter the expression of genes responsible for various biological activities of cultured fibroblasts. However, their effect on enhancing cell proliferation is not yet clear. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine the dimension of surface microgrooves on Ti substrata that enhances proliferation and alters gene expression of cultured human gingival fibroblasts. Material and methods. Commercially pure Ti discs with surface microgrooves of monotonous $3.5{\mu}m$ in depth and respective 15 and $30{\mu}m$ in width were fabricated using photolithography and used as the culture substrata in the two experimental groups in this study (TiD15 and TiD30), whereas the smooth Ti was used as the control substrata (smooth Ti group). Human gingival fibroblasts were cultured on the three groups of titanium substrata and the proliferation, DNA synthesis, and gene expression of theses cells were analyzed and compared between all groups using XTT assay, BrdU assay, and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), respectively. Results. From the XTT assay at 48 h incubation, the proliferation of human gingival fibroblasts in TiD30 was significantly enhanced compared to that in smooth Ti and TiD15. The results from the BrdU assay showed that, at 24 h incubation, the DNA synthesis was significantly enhanced in TiD30 compared to that in smooth Ti. In RT-PCR, increase in the expression of PCR transcripts of fibronectin, CDK6, $p21^{cip1}$ genes was noted at 48h incubation. Conclusion. Surface microgrooves $30{\mu}m$ in width and $3.5{\mu}m$ in depth on Ti substrata enhance proliferation and alter gene expression of cultured human gingival fibroblasts.

The temperature and frequency dependence of the dielectric constant of the BaTiO3 substituted with two types of donor dopants, Nb5+ and Ta5+, respectively, were compared and analyzed. Dielectric specimens of four specific compositions, Ba0.95Nb0.05TiO3, Ba0.90Nb0.10TiO3, Ba0.95Ta0.05TiO3, and Ba0.90Ta0.010TiO3 were prepared by calcining at 1100 ℃ and sintering at 1300 ℃ to have a perovskite structure to measure capacitance. XRD and SEM analysis were used to observe the structure, with particular focus on the integration into the Nb5+ and Ta5+ substituted BaTiO3 crystal lattice. X-ray diffraction peaks in the (200) and (002) planes were observed between 45.10° and 45.45° of the BaTiO3 solid solution substituted with different fractions of Nb5+ and Ta5+. The dielectric properties were analyzed and the relationship between the properties and structure of the substituted BaTiO3 was established. The fine particles and high density of the substituted BaTiO3 were maintained like pure BaTiO3, and in particular, a shift toward the low temperature side of the phase transition temperature range was clearly found, unlike pure BaTiO3. In addition, the phase transition at a temperature higher than the Curie temperature relatively satisfies the modified Curie-Weiss law.
Ti3C2Tx MXene, which is a representative of the two-dimensional MXene family, is attracting considerable attention due to its remarkable physicochemical and mechanical properties. Despite its strengths, however, it is known to be vulnerable to oxidation. Many researchers have investigated the oxidation behaviors of the material, but most researches were conducted at high temperatures above 500 ℃ in an oxidation-retarding environment. In this research, we studied changes in the structural and electrical properties of Ti3C2Tx MXene induced by low-temperature heat treatments in ambient conditions. It was found that a number of TiO2 particles were formed on the MXene surface when it was mildly heated to 200 ℃. Heating the material to higher temperatures, up to 400 ℃, the phase transformation of Ti3C2Tx MXene to TiO2 was accelerated, resulting in a TiO2/Ti3C2Tx hybrid. Consequently, the metallic nature of pure Ti3C2Tx MXene was transformed to semiconductive behavior upon heat-treating at ≥ 200 ℃. The results of this research clearly demonstrate that Ti3C2Tx MXene may be easily oxidized even at low temperatures once it is exposed to air.

In this study, an MPB PMNT system containing 0.05 to 0.10 wt.% BaTiO3 was synthesized using a traditional chemical method and its pyroelectricity was investigated. Pyroelectricity, dielectricity, and ferroelectricity of the synthesized BaTiO3-PMNT system were analyzed by heat treatment at 1240~1280 ℃ for 4 hours to evaluate its applicability as a pyroelectric sensor. Unlike the simple ABO3 ferroelectric, the BaTiO3-doped PMNT system exhibited phase transition characteristics over a wide temperature range typical of complex perovskite structures. Although no dramatic change could be confirmed depending on the amount of BaTiO3 added, stable pyroelectricity was maintained near room temperature and over a wide temperature range. When the amount of BaTiO3 added increased from 0.05BaTiO3-PMNT to 0.10BaTiO3-PMNT, the electric field slightly increased from 5.00×103 kV/m to 6.75×103 kV/m, and the maximum value of remanent polarization slightly increased from 0.223 C/m2 to 0.234 C/m2. The pyroelectric coefficients of 0.05BaTiO3-PMNT and 0.10BaTiO3- PMNT at room temperature were measured to be ~0.0084 C/m2K and ~0.0043 C/m2K, respectively. The relaxor ferroelectric properties of the BaTiO3-PMNT system were confirmed by analyzing the plot of Kmax/K versus (T-Tmax)γ. The BaTiO3-doped MPB PMNT system showed a distinct pyroelectric performance index at room temperature, and the values were Fv ~ 0.0362 m2/C, Fd ~ 0.575×10-4 Pa-1/2.

Titanium nitride(TiN) has been synthesized by nitrogen ion irradiation onto the Ti thin film deposited on STD11 and SKH9 tool materials. The effect of irradiation flux and substrate temperature on the formation behavior and mechanical properaties of TiN were investigated through X-ray diffraction analysis, hardness and pin-on-disc wear testings. Nitrogen ion irradiation onto arc evaporated Ti thin film produced TiN of < 200> orientation at elevated temperature and thereby enhancing surface microhardness by 50% at maximum. Wear resistance was also improved by nitrogen irradiation at most process conditions. The enhancement of wear resistance appeared to be more effective for the nitrogen irradiated conditions at room temperature than at elevated temperature.
