  • In this paper, the total procedure for composite laminate mechanical joint (ASTM D5961 Proc. A, B) from fixture design to test analysis was showed. Composite laminate mechanical joints were analyzed using the FEM(Finite Element Method) and compared to test results. A progressive failure analysis was applied to FEM to analyze the failure behavior of test specimens. Three failure theories - maximum stress, maximum strain, and Tsai-Wu were applied to FEM to predict test failure load. General parameters for composite laminate joints were reviewed and the differences of bearing strength were compared with major parameters.

  • In this paper, the results of composite laminate mechanical joints test(ASTM D5961) are compared with the theoretical strength calculations and FEM analysis results. To calculate the S.C.F.(stress concentration factor) on joint strength, equations on metallic and composite materials in ASM Handbook used and compared with experimental results. The difference of joint strength are compared by geometrical parameters and joining types(single/double lap joint). In FEM analysis, to find efficient FEM model on composite laminate mechanical joint, several FEM models are compared with experimental test results.

  • This paper describes the study on a method for improving the structural durability of bolted joints applied to a composite bogie frame. In this study, three bolted joints with and without inserts and screw threads were selected for determining the effect of the inserts, using experiment and analysis. The structural performances of the proposed bolted joints were compared and evaluated using the test method prescribed by the ASTM D5961 standard. The results revealed that the bolted joint having an insert shape without the screw thread offered improved durability for application to a composite bogie frame. Furthermore, the structural integrity of the frame comprising the bolted joints was evaluated using finite element analysis according to the JIS E 4207 standard. The Tasi-Wu and Von-Mises failure criteria were used for determining the failure of the composite structure and bolted joints, respectively. A sub-modeling technique was introduced for investigating the performance of the bolted joints in greater detail. The analysis results demonstrated that the Tasi-Wu failure index of the composite structure near the bolted joints was reduced by approximately one-half after applying an insert without the screw thread. This implies that the structural durability of the bolted joints of a composite bogie frame could be improved by using a metal insert without the screw thread.

  • This paper presents the bearing strength for laminates in advanced composite materials in bolted joints. Bolted single lap joint tests were experimentally investigated with respect to stabilized and unstabilized lap joints. Stabilized bolted single lap joints refer to joints with out-of-plane rotational constraints. Unstabilized bolted single lap joints refer to joints with absence of out-of-plane deflection constraints. The bearing strength values of laminates in the bolted joint showed that the percentages of ply angle for 0, 45, -45, and 90 degrees were not affected. The bearing strength value in the unstabilized bolted joint was smaller than the bearing strength value in the stabilized bolted joint because of the influence of the out-of-plane behavior. The composite material studied in this paper is a carbon/epoxy unidirectional (UD) tape prepreg cured at $177^{\circ}C(350^{\circ}F)$. In the laminate reference system, the standard angles of 0, 45, -45, and 90 degrees were used for ply orientation within the laminate. A total of 112 bolted single lap joint tests were conducted on specimens from eight distinct laminates. The ASTM-D-5961M standards were adhered to for the stabilized and unstabilized bolted single lap joint tests.
