  • In this paper, we used optoelectronic feedback to generate the carrier frequency for the ASK modulation of a lighting LED. A solar cell was used for photo-detector in the feedback circuit, and the LED light was ASK modulated by controlling the ON/OFF state of the switch that is installed in the feedback loop. The oscillation frequency of the optoelectronic feedback loop was about 50 kHz and the data rate of the ASK modulation was 9.6 kbps. In experiments, the optoelectronic feedback circuit was used for the ASK modulation of a lighting LED in the transponder of a visible light identification system, and data exchange between the transponder and the reader was successfully carried out.

  • In this paper, we reduced the optical noise interference using the ASK modulation with optoelectronic feedback in a wireless optical system in which a lighting LED is used as a light source. The carrier frequency of 70 kHz was generated internally by the oscillation in the optoelectronic feedback circuit, and the output light was ASK modulated at a data rate of 9.6 kbps by opening and shortening the feedback loop with the input signal. In an environment with adjacent noise lights, the ASK modulation with optoelectronic feedback improved the signal to noise ratio by about 25 dB.

  • In this paper, underwater acoustic communication experiment was carried out to test a performance of single carrier digital modulation schemes. The communication experiment was performed at real sea and tested modulation schemes are ASK, FSK with non-coherent detection and QPSK with coherent detection. A modulated image data was transmitted with data rates of 600bps~3Kbps. From the results of BER of the demodulated signal, ASK and FSK show the achievable BER of $10^{-3}{\sim}10^{-4}$ without compensation techniques and QPSK show that of $10^{-4}$ with linear equalizer.

  • This paper treats performance analysis and improvement of DSRC physical layer which is discussed for standardization at the ISO TC-204 WG-15. DSRC is a short range wireless communication for which distance is less than 100m between RSU and O BE, since DSRC requires cheap and simple modulation technique, ASK is being developed as standard modulation system among PSK, FSK and ASK in our country. This paper analyzes the performance of DSRC physical layer system which is at the first stage of development under Rician fading channel, more sepcifically, the validity of the system and the performance limitations are shown. Both equalizer and antenna diversity techniques are simulated to improve the ASK system performance.

  • In this paper, the theoretical as well as experimental results of BER characteristics of three different modulation schemes, ASK, FSK and BPSK, in a multi-path Rician channel are addressed. These BER characteristics are analyzed as a function of $E_b/N_o$ and the power ratio of the line of sight (LOS) component to the Rayleigh scattered component. The theoretical as well as computer simulation results shows the ASK is the most suitable modulation scheme for the dedicated short range communication (DSRC) in terms of implemental cost and system complexity. The decision feedback equalizer is proved to be very effective in canceling the multi-path interference in the DSRC channel environment. The simulation result of the equalized ASK, reveals the performance enhancement achievable with decision feedback (DFE) equalizer for the first generation DSRC system. The multi-ray DSRC channel model is also provided to predict the received carrier power and fluctuation, which are quite dependent on the surroundings of a cell.

  • In this paper, as a study of programmable software radio digital communication, we implemented ASK(Amplitude Shift Keying), FSK(Frequency Shift Keying), and PSK(Phase Shift Keying) modulation using programmable software(algorithm) of DSP(Digital Signal Processor). Moreover, it is possible to select one of those three modulation methods by realizing on single DSP. We adopted Motorola DSP56002 and Crystal CS4215(A/D and D/A converter) for our purpose. The DSP56002 is 24-bit and operates 20 MIPS at 40 MHz, and the CS4215 is 16-bit and supports the maximum 50 kHz sampling frequency.

  • Transmission performances of direct detection-based 100-Gb/s modulation formats are investigated and compared for metro area optical networks. The effects of optical signal-to-noise ratio sensitivity, chromatic dispersion, cross-channel nonlinearity, and transmission distance on the performance of differential 8-ary phase-shift keying (D8PSK), differential phase-shift keying plus three-level amplitude-shift keying (DPSK+3ASK), and dual-carrier differential quaternary phase-shift keying (DC-DQPSK) are evaluated. The performance of coherent dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) with block phase estimation and coherent DP-QPSK with digital differential detection are also presented for reference. According to our analysis, all three direct detection modulation formats could transmit a 100-Gb/s signal over several hundred kilometers of a single-mode fiber link. The results also show that DC-DQPSK outperforms D8PSK and DPSK+3ASK, and the performance of DC-DQPSK is comparable to that of coherent DP-QPSK with digital differential detection. The maximum transmission distance of DC-DQPSK is over 1,000 km, which is enough distance for metro applications.

  • The performance of Manchester-coded ASK optical wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) systems is evaluated laking into account the shot noise and the four wave mixing(FWM) caused by fiber nonlinearities. The result is compared to conventional non-return-to-zero(NRZ) systems for ASK modulation formats. Further, the dynamic range, defined as the ratio of the maximum input power(limited by the FWM), to the minimum input power(limited by receiver sensitivity), is evaluated. For 1.55 rm 16 channel WDM systems, the dynamic range of ASK Manchester coded systems shows a 2.0 dB improvement with respect to the NRZ. This result holds true for both dispersion-shifted fiber and conventional fiber it has been obtained for 10 GHz channel spacing, 1 Gbps/channel bit rate.

  • In this paper, the frequencies sharing possibility between TA(TalkAround) Radios and RFID system in 900MHz frequency band have been studied. The modulation technic for FHSS(Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) of TA is digital FSK and RFID system adapts digital ASK modulation technic. The communication mode of the tested RFID system for frequencies sharing possibility was FHSS. The field test was performed by five scenarios. The RFID field testing system for the frequencies sharing possibility was composed of four tags and two main devices made in USA. Four TA and Egilant spectrum analyzer was used for testing. The frequencies sharing possibility by differentiated modulation was theoretically analyzed. As result of simulation, it was proved that the frequencies sharing between each other modulation system is possible. And also as result of field testing it was confirmed that the signal of TA Radios have no effect on the signal of RFID system.

  • In this paper, we have desired and implemented of ASK modulator MMIC operating at 5.8 GHz for OBE used in AGPS(Automatic Gate Passing System). The proposed ASK modulator MMIC was implemented to apply a single supply voltage of 3 V to the drain in order to decrease ACP(Adjacent Channel Power). As a result, it is exhibits a broad linear modulation range from 0.7 V to 3 V and an On/off characteristic over 40 dB. The layouts of ASK modulator MMICs was designed and fabricated by using ETRI 0.57m MESFET library The chip size was 1.0mm $\times$x1.0mm.
