This paper presents a stress-modified fracture strain for API X65 steel used for gas pipeline, as a function of stress triaxiality. To determine the stress-modified fracture strain, tension test of bars with four different notch radii, made of API X65 steel, is firstly performed, from which true fracture strains are determined as a function of notch radius. Then detailed elastic-plastic, large strain finite element (FE) analyses are performed to estimate variations of stress triaxiality in the notched bars with load. Combining experimental with FE results provides the true fracture strain as a function of stress triaxiality, which is regarded as a criterion of ductile fracture. Application of the developed stress-modified fracture strain to failure prediction of gas pipes made of API X65 steel with various types of defects is discussed.
Occurrence of hydrogen embrittlement could be one of the main obstacles for using structural equipment under hydrogen environment. It is required to develop assessment methods of hydrogen embrittlement for the metals used in production, storage, transmission and application utilities of hydrogen. The most probable method of hydrogen mass transmission is using existing natural gas pipeline. Base or weld part of the pipeline can be damaged by mixed gas of hydrogen in the pipeline. In this study small punch (SP) testing was employed to evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement behavior for a line pipe steel (API X65) with electrochemically hydrogen charged specimens. Results showed that the SP test can be a good candidate test method for hydrogen damage evaluation method. Strength of steel is known to be decreased with the level of hydrogen charging. However, for API X65 steel base metal need in this study, the effect of hydrogen to strength was not significant. It can be negligible regardless of the hydrogen contents in the steel. With this test different strength levels with various hydrogen charging conditions were observed. It can also be anticipated that more sensitive evaluation of material behavior be obtainable by the SP test method.
Apparent mechanical properties in structural components can be different from the initially designed values due to the formation of the residual stress in metal forming and welding. Therefore, the evaluation of residual stress has great importance in the reliability diagnosis of structural components. A nondestructive instrumented indentation technique has been proposed to evaluate various strength concerning mechanical properties from the analysis of load-depth curve. In this study, quantitative residual stress estimation on API X65 welded joints for natural gas pipeline was performed by analyzing the variation of indentation loading curve by residual stress through a new proposed theoretical model. The residual stress from the indentation method was compared with that from the saw-cutting method.

Reliability evaluation of welded structures by mechanical testing of weld heat-affected zones (HAZs) has become general practice throughout the world. HAZs of steel welded Joints show a gradient of microstructure from the fusion line to the unaffected base metal. This study is concerned a correlation between the microstructural change and the fracture characteristics in HAZs of both seam and girth welds of API 5L X65 pipeline steel, which is generally used for natural gas transmission pipelines in Korea. The focus in this study is the investigation of macroscopic fracture behavior of the various regions within HAZ. Changes in microstructure and toughness were observed using actual HAZ specimens. To evaluate the macroscopic toughness of actual HAZ, Charpy V-notch impact test and CTOD test were performed.

Wheel test and potentiodynamic polarization methods were used to evaluate the relative effectiveness of some hydrogen sulfide corrosion inhibitors for the wet gas pipeline API 5L grade X 65 steel. Five commercially corrosion inhibitors have been studied in the deoxygenated produced water solutions containing 10 ppm and 100 ppm of hydrogen sulfide. Based on the experiment results the steel corrosion inhibition mechanism in discussed and two most effective corrosion inhibitors are selected.
Pipelines have the highest capacity and are the safest and the least environmentally disruptive way for gas or oil transmission. Recently, failures due to corrosion defects have become of major concern in maintaining pipeline integrity. A number of solutions have been developed for the assessment of remaining strength of corroded pipelines. However, these solutions are known to be dependent on material properties and pipeline geometries. In this paper, a Fitness-For-Purpose type limit load solution for corroded gas pipelines made of the X65 steel is proposed. For this purpose, a series of burst tests with various types of corrosion defects are performed. Finite element simulations are carried out to derive an appropriate failure criterion. And then, further, extensive finite element analyses are performed to obtain the FFP type limit load solution for corroded X65 gas pipelines as a function of defect depth, length and pipeline geometry. And also, a window based computer program far the assessment of corrosion defect, which is named as COPAP(COrroded Pipeline Assessment Program) has been developed on the basis of proposed limit load solution.
This study is concerned with the correlation between microstructure and mechanical properties in heat affected zones (HAZs) of API X80 pipeline steels containing complex oxides. Three kinds of specimens were fabricated by varying alloying elements of Ti, Al, and Mg to form complex oxides, and their microstructures, Vickers hardness, Charpy impact properties were investigated. The number of complex oxides increased as the excess amount of Ti, Al, and Mg was included in the steels. The simulated HAZs containing a number of oxides showed a high volume fraction of acicular ferrite region because oxides acted as nucleation sites for acicular ferrite. According to the correlation study between thermal input, volume fraction of acicular ferrite region, and Charpy impact properties, the ductile fracture occurred predominantly when the volume fraction of acicular ferrite region was 65% or higher, and the Charpy absorbed energy was excellent over 200 J. When the volume fraction of acicular ferrite region was 35% or lower, the Charpy absorbed energy was poor below 50 J as the brittle cleavage fracture occurred. These findings suggested that the active nucleation of acicular ferrite in the oxide-containing steel HAZs was associated with the great improvement of Charpy impact properties of the HAZs.

This paper is considered about centerline segregation of API 5L steel used in pipeline. Mn/S, Nb and C were known as segregated elements in the centerline of pipe thickness. The Mn usually was accompanied by S consisting of long viscous shape. Microstructure of the centerline was composed of MnS and Nb/Ti indusions including oxide. The segregation effect in centerline region was analyzed by OM, SEM/EDS and micro Vickers hardness. The Mn, Nb and C are retarded elements in transformation from austenite to ferrite or martensite. These elements could derive a bainitic microstructure as a kind of martensite, which is different from difference and element segregation between in matrix and centerline derived from steel melting and heat treatment.
