  • The viscosity and mechanical property of HTPB/AP composite solid propellant are profoundly affected by particle size of AP. In HTPB/AP propellant formulated by two mode of AP size such as $190{\mu}m$ and $7{\mu}m$, the propellant was found to be much less viscose at end of mix when coarse/fine AP ratio is ranged from 70/30 to 60/40 due to high solid packing fraction. It was shown that the toughness of tensile strength test for HTPB/AP propellant increased with the increase in coarse AP. Considering both lower viscosity and better tensile strength, the optimum ratio of AP coarse/fine was estimated to be 70/30.

  • In this study, AP added propellant has been proposed as a method of enhancing the low specific impulse performance found for staged hybrid rocket engine. Experimental tests were carried out to analyze and evaluate the effect of AP added propellant on specific impulse performance as well as fuel-rich combustion characteristics in a staged hybrid rocket engine. Upper limit of AP content in propellant was set to be 15 wt% to maintain the hybrid rocket engine advantages. As a result, 15 wt% AP added propellant showed 3% higher specific impulse performance compared to 0 wt% AP added propellant. Moreover, AP addition proved to offer less injected oxidizer mass flow, less O/F variation, and less combustion pressure while producing fuel-rich gas of the same combustion temperature. Future studies will carry out more combustion tests with metal additives to further enhance specific impulse.

  • The AP/HTPB composite propellant is a common choice for solid rocket propulsion. The externally heated rocket via fires, for instance, can cause the energetic substance to ignite, and this may lead to a thermal runaway event marked by a severe explosion. In order to develop preventive measures to reduce the possibility of such accidents in propulsion systems, we investigate the ignition and initiation properties of AP/HTPB propellant.

  • The propellant tile and crack which account for the greatest proportion of solid rockets are profoundly affected by viscosity and mechanical properties of solid propellant. In this paper HTPB/AP/Al system propellant has been researched for the viscosity, mechanical properties and burning properties with type and contents of bonding agents. The viscosity of propellant was changed significantly depending on the type and contents of bonding agents, and mechanical properties of HTPB/AP/Al system propellant were also varied. Considering both lower viscosity and stable mechanical properties, the optimum type and contents of bonding agents can be identified as the main factors to the HTPB/AP/Al system propellant.

  • This study suggested techniques to reduce burning rate and their effects for the AP thermoplastic composite propellant. Burning rate obtained through ground tests using a small size motor were analyzed to investigate the effects of AP particle size and LiF of 0.5~2.0% on the inhibition reaction for the PEBAX/AP thermoplastic propellant. The results showed that utilization of large size particle of AP and addition of LiF under 2.0% can reduce the burning rate sufficiently and their quantitative effects were suggested in this paper.

  • This study evaluates the ratio of Toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) functional group isocyanate (NCO) to the binder functional hydroxyl group (OH) in HTPB/AP/Al-based propellants on their mechanical properties, flow rate, and viscosity to determine the limitations of NCO/OH in the composition of solid propellants. The propellants consisted of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) polyurethane (PU), aluminum (Al) and tri-modal ammonium perchlorate (AP). The tri-modal AP consisted of 30% of coarse AP, 30% of medium AP, and 8% of fine AP. The ratio of NCO/OH varies from 0.73 to 0.85, with two binder percentages of 10.5% and 12%. An increase in NCO/OH ratio with 10.5% binder provided 20%, 95%, and 8 to 9% increments in UTS, modulus, and hardness, respectively. However, the propellant elongation, density, and flow rate decreased by 170%, 0.2%, and 11-12%, respectively. Viscosity increased 20% based on initial hour reading. The 12% binder provides 27%, 47%, and 5~6% an increment of UTS, modulus and hardness respectively. However, the propellant elongation, density, and flow rate decreased by 47%, 0.17% and 27%, respectively. The viscosity increased 30% based on initial hour reading. This study suggests the NCO/OH value of 0.77 and 10.5~11% binder content in propellant based on the mechanical properties, flow rate, and viscosity for better processing and pot life.

  • The effect of coolants has been studied on the burning properties of low burning rate HTPB/AP composite propellant containing Oxamide or Melamine as coolant for the gas generator. With increasing the content of coolant, the burning rate and the flame temperature could be lowered and the effect on flame temperature was about the same for two coolants. However due to the different thermal decomposition properties of coolant, the burning rate of Melamine propellant was found to abnormally decrease if $200{\mu}m$ AP was partially replaced with $6{\mu}m$ AP.

  • The thermal decomposition rate of ammonium perchlorate with 3% of yellow iron oxide, FeOOH was found to be much faster than with red iron oxide, $Fe_2O_3$. By applying yellow and red iron oxide as a burning rate modifier to HTPB/AP propellant, burning rate of the HTPB/AP propellant with yellow iron oxide was shown to be 10 ~ 25% faster than with red iron oxide. There was no special difference in viscosity and hardness buildup of yellow and red oxide added HTPB/AP formulations.

  • In HTPB/AP propellants, zirconium(Zr) addition to formulation was shown to be less specific impulse than aluminum(Al) by the theoretical calculation because of the lower flame temperature and higher molecular weight of Zr oxide. It was found that the burning rate was faster with the finer size of Zr and the more content of $2{\mu}m$ Zr the faster burning rate is in HTPB/AP/Zr propellants caused by the more conduction energy transfer from Zr flame to the burning surface. Also the burning rate of HTPB/AP/Zr propellant could be reduced by addition of 150nm Al, depending on AP size distribution in formulation with Butacene and $1{\mu}m$ AP.
