The satellite employs an adaptive beamformer to efficiently detect various signals and to suppress multiple interference signals, simultaneously. Although the adaptive beamforming satellite system needs Angle-of-Arrival (AOA) information of the desired signal, it is difficult to estimate the signal AOAs on the satellite environment. However, the AOA estimation on the ground control tower is more efficient and accurate comparing to the satellite environment. In this paper, we propose an adaptive beamforming satellite system based on the signal location information on the ground, consisting on an angle estimator, an adaptive beamformer, and signal processing & D/B unit. The ground control tower estimates the accurate location of the signal source, and it sends the estimated coordinates of the desired signal to the satellite. The angle estimator mounted on the satellite calculates the desired signal AOA, based on the signal location information transmitted from the ground control center. The satellite beamformer detects the desired signal and suppresses unwanted signals based on the signal AOA calculated by the angle estimator. We provide computer simulation results to present the performance of the proposed satellite adaptive beamforming system based on the signal location information.

this study examined hybrid Time of Arrival/Angle of Arrival (TOA/AOA) localization technique in a cellular network. Based on the linearized equations from the TOA and AOA measurements, the weighted least square (WLS) method is proposed to obtain the location estimation of a mobile station (MS) by analyzing the statistical properties of the error vector in Line of Sight (LOS) and Non-line of Sight (NLOS) environments, respectively. Moreover, the precise expression of the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for hybrid TOA/AOA measurements in different LOS/NLOS conditions was derived when the LOS error is a Gaussian variable and the NLOS error is an exponential variable. The idea of cooperative localization is proposed based on the additional information from short-range communication among the MSs in fourth generation (4G) cellular networks. Therefore, the proposed hybrid TOA/AOA WLS method can be improved further with the cooperative scheme. The simulation results show that the hybrid TOA/AOA method has better performance than the TOA only method, particularly when the AOA measurements are accurate. Moreover, the performance of the hybrid TOA/AOA method can be improved further by the cooperative scheme.

In the wireless communication system based on an array antenna, the angle of arrival (AOA) information of signal is very important element and various AOA estimation algorithms have been studied. Although most AOA estimation algorithms employ the uniform linear array (ULA), some algorithms apply the planar array (PA) antenna. In this paper, we present an algorithm for efficiently estimating AOAs of adjacent multiple signals, based on the uniform rectangular array antenna. This approach has two steps; after approximately estimating AOA groups consisting of the closely located signal sources using CAPON, accurately estimating the individual AOA of each signal in the estimated AOA group using Beamsapce MUSIC. The estimation performance of the presented cascade AOA algorithm is illustrated through the computer simulation example.

For a localization system, the TDOA (Time Difference of Arrival) measurement and AOA (Angle of Arrival) measurement are often used for estimating target's positions. Although it is known that the accuracy of TDOA based localization is superior to that of AOA based one, it may have a poor vertical accuracy in bad geometrical conditions. This paper, therefore, proposes a localization algorithm in which the vertical position is estimated by AOA measurements and the horizontal one is estimated by TDOA measurement in order to achieve high 3D-location accuracy. And this algorithm is applied to a GPS jammer localization systems because it has a large value of the DOP (Dilution of Precision) when the jammer is located far away from the system. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid TDOA/AOA location algorithm gives much higher location accuracy than TDOA or AOA only location.

The modern wireless communication system employes the beamforming technique based on a massive array antenna with a number of elements, for supporting the smooth communication services. A reliable beamforming technology requires the Angle-of-Arrival(: AOA) information for the signal incident to the receiving antenna, which is generally estimated by the high-resolution AOA estimation algorithm such as Multiple Signal Classification(: MUSIC). Although the MUSIC algorithm has the excellent estimation performance, it is difficult to estimate AOA in real time for the massive array antenna due to the extremely high computational complexity. In order to enhance this problem, in this paper, we propose the cascade AOA estimation algorithm based on a Flexible Massive Concentric Circular Array(: FMCCA) antenna with the On/Off function for antenna elements. The proposed cascade algorithm consists of the CAPON algorithm using some elements among entire antenna elements and the Beamspace MUSIC algorithm using entire elements. We provide computer simulation results for various scenarios to demonstrate the AOA estimation performance of the proposed approach.

If the angle of arrival (AOA) of a source is perturbed due to some reasons in a statistical way as in the environment of wireless mobile communications, a new model appropriate for such environment should be used instead of the point source model. In this paper, an angel-perturbed source model is proposed and an estimation method based on the eigen-decomposition tecklique is investigated under the model. The asymptotic distribution of the estimation errors is obtained to observe the statistical properties.

In this paper, positioning schemes based on AOA(Angle of Arrival), TOA(Time of Arrival), and TDOA(Time Difference of Arrival) measurements are reviewed and analyzed. In the case of using those schemes in microcell structure with severe multipath fading and shadowing conditions, the rapid and unpredictable variation of signal level makes it difficult to estimate the position and velocity of mobiles. Therefore, we propose a novel mobile tracking method based on the multicriteria decision making, in which uncertain parameters such as RSS(Received Signal Strength), the distance between mobile and base station, the moving direction, and the previous location are participated in the decision process using aggregation function in fuzzy set theory. Through a simulation, we analysis the impaction of the frequent change of direction and speed of mobiles.

The Angle-of-Arrival(AOA) information for an array antenna receiver is one of the important factors for estimating the location of specific signals and detecting signals efficiently, in various situations. The AOA estimator in the satellite environment can rapidly calculate the AOA information in the wide area, utilizing a planar (grid, circular) array antenna mounted on the satellite. Since the satellite receiver has the limitation of the array antenna size, the concentric circular (ring) array (CCA or CRA) antenna structure with comparatively small size but with multiple antenna elements is more efficient than the uniform circular array (UCA) structure, for the satellite environment. In this paper, we introduce a cascade AOA estimation algorithm based on CRA, consisting of CAPON and Beamspace MUSIC. In addition, we provide computer simulation examples for verifying the estimation performance of the cascade AOA estimation algorithm based on CRA and compare it to the case of UCA.
For a wireless communication system, the angle-of-arrival (AOA) of the signal has a variety of applications. The signal AOA is estimated utilizing various antenna array structure such as Uniform Linear Array (ULA), Uniform Rectangular Array (URA), and Uniform Circular Array (UCA). In this paper, we introduce a cascade AOA estimation algorithm based on the UCA, which is consisted of CAPON and Beamspace MUSIC. CAPON is employed to estimate approximate AOA groups including multiple AOA signals and Beamspace MUSIC is employed to estimate detailed signal AOAs in the estimated AOA groups. In addition, we provide the computer simulation results for verifying and analyzing the performance of the cascade AOA estimator based on UCA.

In this study, a new signal model suitable for UWB indoor environments with random angle spread is proposed to estimate the angle-of-arrivals(AOAs) of UWB cluster signals in an UWB wireless communication. A subspace based estimation technique adopted for this model is investigated and the estimates of the AOA and distribution parameter on the received UWB cluster signals are obtained. The proposed model and estimation technique are verified using computer simulations, and the performance of the estimation error is analyzed.
